Abstract: Der Band dokumentiert die Beiträge des Symposiums "Kultur - Handlung - Demokratie".

Abstract (english): Culture, action and democracy are current topics of debates in society and educational policies. They also have a prominent position in the work of Lutz H. Eckensberger. The contribution clarifies the links between these themes and their connection to Eckensberger's theory. The cultural psychological approach with its developmental dimension is very fruitful for clarifying the enabling conditions of modern democracies. It reconstructs possible opportunities for and barriers to learning the normative principles that form the backdrop of terms such as competence, responsibility, trust, solidarity etc. at the interface between individual and culture. Title: Risk management and morality in agriculture. Conventional and organic farming in a German region
In: Casimir, Michael J. (Hrsg.): Culture and the changing environment, Oxford: Berghahn, 2007 , S. 79-106

Abstract (english): The paper represents further efforts to apply the "types of everyday morality", developed over the last ten years, to another context: farming. The four types were derived partly from empirical studies, partly from theoretical and meta-theoretical arguments. They represent a heteronomous or autonomous way of thinking on two levels of understanding the social sphere (interpersonal and transpersonal). In detail they refer not only to moral orientations, butalso to emotions, understanding of facts, risk taking, concepts of responsibility, control beliefs, solidarity with groups and identity concepts. So their conceptualization is rich, going beyond pure cognitive/ structural arguments. Farming occurs in a complex field of conflicts between economic, ecological and social domains. Two basic strategies of agricultural risk management exist: organic and conventional orientations in farming. The goal of the chapter is a detailed analysis of the morals involved in these farming styles. At first glance they seem to differ morally: often organically working farmers are considered as being more "moral" in a quite general sense (in their treatment of animals, nature and also costumers). To analyse this stereotype more closely ten conventionally and ten organically oriented farmers (self-description), five organically and five conventionally oriented experts (academic training in the field) and five organically and five conventionally oriented decision makers (officials, politicians, entrepreneurs) in the field were interviewed in depth. Basically the results show a complex picture of the two groups, which falsify a simple attribution of the groups to a difference in "moral maturity".(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english): The study of morality necessarily leads to a perspective that conceives of psychology primarily as a cultural science rather than a natural science. In the chapter the perspective of a cultural psychology is taken. Under this perspective, the relationship between culture and morality is intrinsic; culture cannot be defined or investigated without heeding morality, and morality can also not be understood without reference to the culture concept. Secondly, cultural rules complement natural laws in explaining and understanding human activities (behaviors, cognition, affects). Human action (not behaviour) is taken as the empirical and analytical unit for psychology. It serves as an analytical universal and methodically as tertium comparationis. The perspective is discussed by arguing for the centrality of agency, transcultural standards of duty and contextualization of research on moral development.(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english): In the article a series of empirical research projects (1980- 2003) on moral judgements are summarized from the perspective of the relationship between facts and norms. The author's central thesis is that this relationship can be discussed productively, if one turns to contextualized analyses of moral judgements. And that it is particularly advantageous to do so in an action theory framework and from a developmental perspective. For reasons that the data aswell as the data collection can be understood only in the framework of action theory, this theoretical approach is explicated preceding the summarization of the main results of the studies.

Abstract (english): The relation of morality to indigenous psychology (IP) is examined from four different yet complementary viewpoints. First, the topic of morality is dealt with on a content level: If social scientists conceive of IP as a psychology that aims at understanding, explaining and predicting people's behaviour within specific cultures, then cultural rule systems, which are normative frameworks for individual behaviour, can be understood as the core and the main differentia specifica of such a psychology. The crucial question of whether or not morality as one of these rule systems is culture specific (indigenous) or universal is discussed. Second, the role of morality in the emergence of IPs is treated at the science of science level. Third, an argument is developed based on the fact that particularly from an IP perspective, research on culture does not just serve an analytical function, but treats culture as a characteristic of a group. It is postulated that this conceptualization of cultures as more or less homogenous entities has moral implications. Finally, basic methodical implications are discussed. It is postulated that the general research strategy proposed in cross-cultural psychology must also be complemented by heeding moral arguments.
