Abstract: In assessing verbal academic self-concept with preadolescents, researchers have used scales for students' self-concepts in reading and in their native language interchangeably. The authors conducted 3 studies with German students to test whether reading and German (i.e., native language) self-concepts can be treated as the same or different constructs. Compared with other facets of academic self-concept, reading self-concept was more highly related to reading test scores (Study 1) and German self-concept to German grades (Study 2). In Study 3, reading and general school self-concepts demonstrated similar relations to German grades. The findings of the 3 studies, albeit indirect, supported the specificity matching principle and caution researchers against applying reading and native language self-concept scales uncritically to infer verbal self-concept.

Abstract: In this paper, we analyse the differences between L1 acquisition and L2 learning and identify four main aspects: input quality and quantity, mapping processes, cross-lingual influence, and reading experience. As a consequence of these differences, we conclude that L1 readability measures cannot be directly mapped to L2 readability. We propose to calculate L2 readability for various dimensions and for smaller units. It is particularly important to account for the cross-lingual influence from the learner's L1 and other previously acquired languages and for the learner's higher experience in reading. In our analysis, we focus on lexical readability as it has been found to be the most influential dimension for L2 reading comprehension. We discuss the features frequency, lexical variation, concreteness, polysemy, and context specificity and analyse their impact on L2 readability. As a new feature specific to L2 readability, we propose the cognateness of words with words in languages the learner already knows. A pilot study confirms our assumption that learners can deduce the meaning of new words by their cognateness to other languages. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: In this study, we investigated effects of socioeconomic and language minority classroom composition on students' reading achievement and explored the mediating role of central features of instructional quality, namely focus on language, student-oriented climate, and structured classroom management. Analyses were based on data collected from 352 German ninth-grade classrooms across two measurement points (t1, t2) in a multilevel framework. We found socioeconomic composition to be related to individual reading achievement at t2 after accounting for the corresponding baseline assessment at t1. However, the proportion of German language learners had no additional effect on reading achievement. Our results also suggest that the effect of the socioeconomic composition on achievement may be mediated partially by the teacher's focus on language during instruction. We conclude that more attention has to be paid to providing equal opportunities to all students in language classes.

Abstract (english): The support of multilingualism within the European Union is one of the central concerns of the Commission of the European Communities. The contextually-bound and flexible use of several languages is regarded as a key qualification, both for individual and social purposes. Within the framework of education in early infancy, the countries involved (in the CotEC) are supposed to promote initiatives that support multilingualism in European societies (European Commission 2005). So, how can the raising of awareness for interlingual phenomena, be encouraged systematically in the context of language instruction and how do students with different language learning experiences benefit from this instructional support? The following contribution addresses this question in the context of English as a second language and German language instruction. It is a shortened and complemented version of an article written by Göbel, Vieluf, and Hesse (2010), previously published in German language. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): This longitudinal study examines the differences between monolingual children and children with German as a second language (GSL) in reading predictors. In structural equation modeling, we assessed the relationships between different reading predictors such as nonverbal intelligence, phonological working memory, language skills, rapid naming, letter knowledge, and phonological awareness in preschool and at the beginning of elementary school. The relationship patterns between the predictors were consistent for monolingual (n = 111) and GSL children (n = 282). However, the predictors' influence on reading skills at the end of first and second grade of elementary school varied between the language groups: In monolingual children, phonological awareness was the strongest predictor of decoding speed as an indicator of reading ability. However, in GSL children phonological awareness had no significant influence on decoding speed, whereas nonverbal intelligence explained a major part of the variance in decoding speed.

Abstract: The birth of a child alters various domains in the lives of women and affects their personal well-being. An important question, therefore, is what factors facilitate transition to parenthood and make motherhood a positive experience. According to the concept of person-environment fit, parental well-being may be explained by a mother's personal value-system and how well it fits within her cultural environment. A cross-cultural approach provides the possibility to account for personal as well as cultural influences. In this study, the values and well-being of 74 Spanish and 31 German mothers of young children were compared. Contrary to expectation, Spanish mothers are as family-oriented as German mothers, but show more approval for individualistic and traditional attitudes. Both groups score equally high on several scales assessing well-being. However, personal values correlate with parental well-being in the German but not the Spanish sample. So, whereas goodness of fit of the personal values and environment accounts for German mothers' well-being, this does not hold true for the Spanish mothers. These results are interpreted to reflect changes in cultural values in Spain and Germany.

Abstract (english): When children are of a certain age, family life is strongly linked to the school. Because attending school is mandatory in all countries, school time imposes limits on family life and family vacations. On the one hand, school time makes other family activities impossible at that time; on the other hand, it frees parents from having to care for or supervise their children. And, in most countries, school time extends from early morning to late afternoon. Only some countries such as Austria, Germany, Greece, and, in part, Italy, Portugal, and Switzerland have historically chosen shorter school times (Allemann-Ghionda 2005, pp. 77-78). Up to 2003, elementary and secondary school traditionally ended at lunchtime for the majority of students in Germany. But German school time has become a new issue during the last 10 years, because the policy on school time has changed through the implementation and expansion of so-called all-day schools providing lunch and an enlarged and changing time pattern (including extracurricular activities) in the afternoon. Two of the reasons for increasing the number of hours students (can) spend in school each day were the poor results of German students in international assessments of education standards and the demand for a better work-life balance for parents through all-day schools. As one can expect, such moves to change some aspects of society's self-conception have raised a lot of discussions

Abstract (english): The following article examines the differences in English and German proficiency of 9th grade migrant students from different cultural backgrounds and the differences in parental support in these groups. Using the data from a large-scale German study (DESI-German-English-Proficiency of 9th graders), the findings reveal differences in German and English competence between students with Turkish, Russian and Polish migration background. Regarding their German proficiency, monolingual German students outperform all migrant groups, whereas the Turkish group seems to be the most disadvantaged. Regarding their English tests, the three groups have slightly better scores than German monolinguals, but bilingual students perform significantly better than German monolinguals. Parental support does not correlate significantly with the students proficiency measures, but the analysis does show differences in parental support among the three groups of immigrants, with Russian students reporting the least parental support in both domains.

Abstract (english): Based on the concept of language awareness, we defined nine item properties concerning the area "Sprache und Sprachgebrauch untersuchen" (speech and speech use) of the KMK educational standards. In a first step, we investigated the relationship between these item properties and the difficulty of 107 German grammar items using a sample of 3,276 third and fourth grade students. In a second step, we examined whether this relationship is moderated by students language background (German as a second language), cultural capital, and years of schooling. Analyses for step 1 were based on the linear logistic test model (LLTM) and a mixed model approach. In step 2, the LLTM was supplemented by the student attributes and grade level as predictor variables. The item properties explained item difficulty very well (R2 = .695). However, for eight out of nine item properties, the effects on item difficulty were moderated by at least one student attribute, or grade level providing evidence of Differential Facet Functioning (DFF).
