Abstract (english):
Numbers and space are two semantic primitives that interact with each other. Both recruit brain regions along the dorsal pathway, notably parietal cortex. This makes parietal cor- tex a candidate for the origin of numerical spatial interaction. The underlying cognitive architecture of the interaction is still under scrutiny. Two classes of explanations can be dis- tinguished. The early interaction approach assumes that numerical and spatial information are integrated into a single representation at a semantic level. A second approach pos- tulates independent semantic representations. Only at the stage of response selection and preparation these two streams interact. In this study we used a numerical landmark task to identify the locus of the interaction between numbers and space. While lying in an MR scanner participants decided on the smaller of two numerical intervals in a visually presented number triplet. The spatial position of the middle number was varied; hence spatial intervals were congruent or incongruent with the numerical intervals. Responses in incongruent trials were slower and less accurate than in congruent trials. By combining across-vertex correlations (micro pattern) with a cluster analysis (macro pattern) we identi- fied large-scale networks that were devoted to number processing, eye movements, and sensory motor functions. Using support vector classification in different regions of inter- est along the intraparietal sulcus, the frontal eye fields, and supplementary motor area we were able to distinguish between congruent and incongruent trials in each of the networks. We suggest that the identified networks participate in the integration of numerical and spa- tial information and that the exclusive assumption of either an early or a late interaction between numerical and spatial information does not do justice to the complex interaction between both dimensions.

Abstract:
Perceptual decision-making performance depends on several cognitive and neural processes. Here, we fit Ratcliff s diffusion model to accuracy data and reaction-time distributions from one numerical and one verbal two-choice perceptual-decision task to deconstruct these performance measures into the rate of evidence accumulation (i.e., drift rate), response criterion setting (i.e., boundary separation), and peripheral aspects of performance (i.e., nondecision time). These theoretical processes are then related to individual differences in brain activation by means of multiple regression. The sample consisted of 24 younger and 15 older adults performing the task in fMRI before and after 100 daily 1-hr behavioral training sessions in a multitude of cognitive tasks. Results showed that individual differences in boundary separation were related to striatal activity, whereas differences in drift rate were related to activity in the inferior parietal lobe. These associations were not significantly modified by adult age or perceptual expertise. We conclude that the striatum is involved in regulating response thresholds, whereas the inferior parietal lobe might represent decision-making evidence related to letters and numbers.

Abstract (english):
Performance in Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) tasks with different materials (dice, digits, letters, objects) and key precursor skills of reading and arithmetic were assessed in kindergarten children (n = 541) in their last year before entering elementary school. Based on their precursor skills, three groups of children were identified, i.e. children at risk for reading problems (n = 31), children at risk for arithmetic problems (n = 39), and children at risk for problems in both domains (n = 34). These at-risk children were compared to a control group (n = 343) regarding their performance in the different RAN tasks. Results revealed domain-specific deficits in both groups of children with a single risk: While children at risk for problems in reading exhibited deficits in the RAN of letters and objects, children at risk for problems in arithmetic showed deficits in the RAN of dice and digits. The group of children at risk for problems in both domains displayed additive, domain-general deficits. Findings are discussed in the context of behavioral and neurocognitive research on reading and mathematical disabilities.

Abstract:
Bos u.a. 2006).

Abstract (english):
This study investigates response inhibition and its relationship to phonological processing in third-graders with and without dyslexia. Children with dyslexia (n = 20) and children without dyslexia (n = 16) were administered a stop signal task and a digit span forwards task. Initial analyses revealed phonological processing deficits in terms of a phonological short-term deficit in children with dyslexia but revealed no group differences with regard to performance on the stop signal task. There was no relationship between performance on the stop signal task and phonological short-term capacity for the group of children with dyslexia. In contrast, in the group of children without dyslexia, there was a tendency that better phonological short-term capacity was associated with faster primary reaction times on the stop signal task. Furthermore, better phonological short-term capacity was related to slower inhibitory processes among children without dyslexia. When controlling group specifically for the effects of phonological short-term capacity on the performance on the stop signal task we found slightly faster primary reaction times and significantly slower inhibitory processes in the group of children with dyslexia. Overall, these findings suggest the activation of phonological strategies during performance on the stop signal task in children without dyslexia but not in children with dyslexia. We discuss the possibility that in children without dyslexia, phonological processing strategies might have a beneficial effect on speed of response execution but might slow down response inhibition.

Abstract:
Recent studies indicate that children with intellectual disabilities have functional limitations primarily in the phonological loop of working memory (Baddeley, 1986). These findings are indicative of a specific structural deficit. Building on this research, the present study examines whether it is possible to identify specific phonological subfunctions as causal factors in these qualitative deviations from typical development found in children with intellectual disabilities. In a three-group design, specific subfunctions of phonological working memory were examined in students of the same mental age (one group of 15-year-olds with mild intellectual disability [IQ 50-69], one group of 10-year-olds with borderline intellectual disability [IQ 70-84], and one group of 7-year-olds of average intelligence [IQ 85-115]. The automatic activation of the subvocal rehearsal process was operationalized by the word-length effect; the size of the phonological store, by a task involving repetition of nonwords of differing syllable length; and accuracy of processing, by both the phonological similarity effect and the quality of acoustic presentation of the nonword repetition task (distorted vs. undistorted item presentation). The results revealed impairment of the phonological store only in terms of reduced storage capacity, and showed that this deficit increased with length of the item sequences to be remembered. However, this deficit was observed only in children with mild intellectual disability; the performance of children with borderline intellectual disability corresponded with that of a control group of 7-year-olds matched for mental age. The findings are discussed in the context of the two-component model of the phonological loop. They indicate that deficits in storage capacity are associated with deficits in language development and thus seem to be one of the causes of cognitive impairment in individuals with mild intellectual disability.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
To meet the challenge of organising research with a stronger focus on communicative, trans-disciplinary, collaborative and international dimensions and to use the potential of information technology, national and European research politics have promoted virtual applications that support research processes. However, not every de-centrally cooperating research group automatically becomes more efficient once it endeavours the effort of tackling a comprehensive virtual research environment. This contribution draws on existing programmes and experience to develop a scenario for information scientific research in the field.
