Abstract (english):
Anchoring vignettes are item batteries especially designed for correcting responses that might be affected by incomparability. This article investigates the effects of anchoring vignettes on the validity of student self-report data in 64 cultures. Using secondary data analysis from the 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), we checked the validity of ratings on vignette questions, and investigated how rescaled item responses of two student scales, Teacher Support and Classroom Management, enhanced comparability and predictive validity. The main findings include that (a) responses to vignette questions represent valid individual and cultural differences; in particular, violations in these responses (i.e., misorderings) are related to low socioeconomic status and low cognitive sophistication; (b) the rescaled responses tend to show higher levels of comparability; and (c) the associations of rescaled Teacher Support and Classroom Management with math achievement, Student-Oriented Instruction, and Teacher-Directed Instruction are slightly different from raw scores of the two target constructs, and the associations with rescaled scores seem to be more in line with the literature. Namely, the associations among all self-report Likerttype scales are weaker with rescaled scores, presumably reducing common method variance, and both rescaled scale scores are more positively related to math achievement. The country ranking also changes substantially; in particular, Asian cultures top the ranking on Teacher Support after rescaling. However, anchoring vignettes are not a cure-all in solving measurement bias in crosscultural surveys; we discuss the technicality and directions for further research on this technique. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Public availability, high data quality, and sample characteristics make data from international large-scale assessments (ILSA) attractive for secondary analyses, and more and more researcher use them to analyze teaching and learning in students' classrooms. However, for several reasons ILSA data is limited in its scope, and conclusions on educational effectiveness are restricted. This study specifically intends to evaluate the potential danger of overestimating the effectiveness of indicators of teaching and learning based on ILSA data. We take advantage of two extensions to the German sample for the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 study: The sample was enhanced a) by adding students from entire 9th grade classrooms and b) by a repeated measurement, re-testing all participants one year later in 10th grade. This study analyzed eight indicators of students' reports on teaching and learning in their mathematics classrooms. Regression analyses in multi-level structural equation models (doubly-latent models) compared results of cross-sectional analyses (controlling for individual background and classroom level characteristics) with a longitudinal extension (controlling for prior achievement). Results only partially confirm common practice to use ILSA data to study educational effectiveness of classroom level processes. Cross-sectional analyses overestimate effectiveness results, but three out of four indicators that are cross-sectionally related to student achievement are also related to students' achievement development in grade 10. Assuming that previous studies modeled and interpreted the data correctly, the importance of their results in debates on educational effectiveness is thus underlined. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Recent work has suggested that older adults may be less susceptible to the next-day effects of alcohol relative to younger adults. The effects of alcohol in younger adults may be mediated by sleep duration, but due to age differences in the contexts of alcohol use, this mediation process may not generalize to older adults. The present study examined age-group (younger vs. older adults) differences in how alcohol use influenced next-day tiredness during daily life. Reports of alcohol use, sleep duration, and next-day tiredness obtained on ∼101 days from 91 younger adults (ages 20-31 years) and 75 older adults (ages 65-80 years) were modeled using a multilevel, moderated mediation framework. Findings indicated that (a) greater-than-usual alcohol use was associated with greater-than-usual tiredness in younger adults only, (b) greater-than-usual alcohol use was associated with shorter-than-usual sleep duration in younger adults only, and (c) shorter-than-usual sleep duration was associated with greater tiredness in both younger and older adults. For the prototypical younger adult, a significant portion (43%) of the association between alcohol use and next-day tiredness could be explained assuming mediation through sleep duration, whereas there was no evidence of mediation for the prototypical older adult. Findings of age differences in the mediation process underlying associations among alcohol use, sleep, and tiredness provide insight into the mechanisms driving recent observations of reduced next-day effects of alcohol in older relative to younger adults. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
This study analyses students' self-reported acceptance or rejection of offers for Turkish-German bilingual interactions within the context of a peer-learning intervention. Bilingual trainers explicitly provided repeated opportunities to communicate bilingually (e. g., they talked Turkish during the training). Bilingual speakers of Turkish and German (N = 37) in grades three and four were asked answered in the middle and at the end of an eight-week peer-learning intervention whether they used Turkish during the sessions. The students' reported reasons for their language choice were analyzed using content-analysis (Mayring, 2015). At both measurement points, students reported more acceptances of language offers than rejections. The given reasons referred primarily to the individuals themselves (e. g., their language competencies, task-solving competencies, emotions and attitudes). Peers and trainers played a minor role, while the context, an intervention study, was only an argument for acceptance of bilingual interactions, not for rejection. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Emotions and motivation are important prereq-uisites, mediators, and outcomes of learning and achieve-ment. In this article, we first review major theoretical approaches and empirical findings in research on students' emotions and motivation in mathematics, including a dis-cussion of how classroom instruction can support emo-tions and motivation. Based on this review, we encourage researchers from mathematics education and other dis-ciplines of educational research to combine their efforts. Second, we provide an overview of the contributions in this special issue, most of which reflect such a combination of efforts by considering perspectives from both mathematics education and other fields of educational research. Finally, we consider the neglect of intervention studies and outline directions for future research. We identify intervention studies that target emotions and motivation as one promis-ing but so far underrepresented line of research in mathe-matics education and review results from existing interven-tion studies. For future research, we suggest that researchers should implement fine-grained concepts, assessment instru-ments, theoretical hypotheses, and methods of analysis tai-lored to the specific features of the mathematical domain to adequately investigate students' emotions and motivation in this domain.

Abstract:
Abstract:
The data set presented in this article results from a project to produce a Linked-Employer-Employee data set for the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). In 2012/13, a survey of German employers was conducted using face-to-face and paper-and-pencil interviews (N = 1,708; response rate = 30.1 %). Establishments were sampled based on address information provided by employed participants from the SOEP. The SOEP is a longitudinal study of German households that are representative of the German population, repeatedly surveying about 20,000 individuals and 10,000 households each year. The information obtained from both surveys can be linked in order to create a linked employer-employee data set concerning organizational context and individual outcomes (N = 1,834, mostly one employee per employer). The information collected in the LEE study reported enrich and enhance the existing individual-level and household-level SOEP data with supplemental data about the workplace and the employees' working conditions. In contrast to the SOEP core study, the SOEP-LEE data set contains more detailed and independent information concerning the work context. This way, the LEE data can be used to investigate the organizational impact on the genesis of social inequalities and the individual development of the life course. The SOEP-LEE study specifically sought to obtain information about inter-organizational as well as intra-organizational heterogeneities such as forms of employment (part-time, full-time), temporary work, and similar atypical forms of employment, as well as about other factors, such as gender composition, the age of the employees, and the wage structure of the establishment. The overall aim was to investigate social inequalities and their relation to employers and organizations (e. g., to determine how organizational structures and practices influence social inequality at the individual level). A detailed project report of the study can be found in Weinhardt et al. (2016). (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Argument mining has become a popular research area in NLP. It typically includes the identification of argumentative components, e.g. claims, as the central component of an argument. We perform a qualitative analysis across six different datasets and show that these appear to conceptualize claims quite differently. To learn about the consequences of such different conceptualizations of claim for practical applications, we carried out extensive experiments using state-of-the-art feature-rich and deep learning systems, to identify claims in a cross-domain fashion. While the divergent conceptualization of claims in different datasets is indeed harmful to cross-domain classification, we show that there are shared properties on the lexical level as well as system configurations that can help to overcome these gaps.
