Abstract (english):
This study investigates the relationship between intelligence and individual differences in children's moral development across a range of different moral transgressions. Taking up prior research that showed morality and intelligence to be related in adolescents and adults, the current study wants to test if these findings can be extended to younger children. The study was designed to address some of the shortcomings in prior research by examining young children aged between 6 years; 4 months and 8 years; 10 months, using a broad concept of moral development including emotional aspects and applying an approach that is closely connected to children's daily lives. Participants (N = 129) completed a standardized intelligence test and were presented four moral transgression stories to assess moral development. Results demonstrated that findings from prior research with adolescents or adults cannot simply be extended to younger participants. No significant correlations of moral development and intelligence were found for any of the presented stories. This provides first evidence that - at least in middle childhood - moral developmental status seems to be independent from children's general intelligence assessed by figural inductive reasoning tests. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
This German prevalence study examined disproportionate representation of language-minority students among children identified with learning disorder (LD) according to ICD-10 (WHO, 1992). Most German school achievement tests used in LD diagnostics do not provide separate norms for language-minority students, and thus do not take these children's second language status into account when evaluating their academic performance. Although this is likely to result in an LD overidentification of language-minority students, little is known about the magnitude of this effect. Therefore, we compared the estimation of LD prevalence between native German speaking students (n = 566) and language-minority students (n = 478) when pooled versus group-specific achievement norms were used for LD classification. Three important findings emerged from our study: Firstly, and as expected, significant disproportionality effects occurred under pooled norms. Specifically, the likelihood of being diagnosed with LD amounted to 14-18 % among native German speakers and nearly doubled to 25-30 % among language-minority students. Secondly, disproportionality varied as a function of LD subtype: Whereas no disproportionate representation was revealed for arithmetic LD (F81.2), overidentification of language-minority students was found for verbal LD subtypes (namely, reading disorder [F81.0], spelling disorder [F81.1], and mixed disorder of scholastic skills [F81.3]). Thirdly, disproportionality effects were absent when group-specific norms were used for LD classification that controlled for second-language issues. Challenges that have to be met when testing language-minority students for LD are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Research on classroom instruction has consistently identified characteristics that contribute to student learning. For instance, these include structural-organizational aspects (e.g., classroom management) and affective aspects (e.g., classroom social climate). The idea that the effects of instruction may differentially depend on students' characteristics has been investigated within the scope of aptitude-treatment-interactions (ATI) research. This study of elementary school (1,041 students, 54 classes) builds on ATI and examines main effects and interaction effects of instructional quality (i.e., classroom management and classroom social climate) and individual risks of school failure (i.e., demographic risk: immigration background or functional risk: low cognitive ability scores) on students' science competence. Based on hierarchical linear modeling and class-level aggregated student ratings of instructional quality, results show a positive link between classroom social climate and science competence but not for classroom management and science competence. As its most important finding, our study demonstrates the compensatory capacity of instructional quality to narrow the achievement gap between students at risk and their peers. Furthermore, classroom management also counteracted risk of school failure when controlling for students' language proficiency. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Beginning teachers are often associated with high strain and the so called reality shock. Although the German teacher induction process is supposed to ensure a smooth transition to becoming a teacher it is often a subject to criticism. Thus, in 2009 a reform of teacher induction was initiated. Applying a quasi-experimental (contrasting the last cohort before and the first after reform) pre-post-post design the current study examines the development of emotional exhaustion at the beginning (Time 1) and end (Time 2) of induction time, and after having worked as fully licensed teacher for one year (Time 3) for beginning teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia (N = 1,749). Results of latent change models provided evidence for a second reality shock; following an initial decrease during induction time, emotional exhaustion increased after the first year of fully licensed teaching. Neither the reform nor school type revealed any influencing effects on this development. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
The present study adds to earlier research on extra-curricular activities by investigating how participation in such activities affects reading comprehension and motivation. Analyses are based on data from fifth grade students attending German all-day schools. The influence of both participation in reading-related extra-curricular activities and level of perceived autonomy in these activities on reading motivation, reading self-concept and reading comprehension was analyzed. Results indicate that participation in reading-related extra-curricular activities has no significant effect on the dependent variables. However, perceived autonomy is positively related to reading motivation and reading self-concept. Moreover, reading comprehension is positively affected if students report to voluntary participation in reading-related extra-curricular activities. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english):
One way to address the leaking pipeline toward STEM-related careers (i.e., science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is to intervene on students' STEM motivation in school. However, a neglected question in intervention research is how such interventions affect motivation in subjects not targeted by the intervention. This question was addressed through data from a cluster-randomized study in which a value intervention was successfully implemented in 82 ninth-grade math classrooms. Side effects on value, self-concept, and effort in German as students' native language and English as a foreign language were assessed 6 weeks and 5 months after the intervention. Negative effects on value for German, but not for English, were found 5 months after the intervention. The theoretical and educational implications of such effects are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Reading and understanding digital text that is organized in a non-linear hypertext format can be challenging for students as it requires a more self-directed selection of text pieces compared to reading linear texts. This study aims at investigating how individual differences in students' skills in comprehending digital text can be explained by their navigation behavior and various underlying skills. Students' navigation behavior was operationalized by their selection of task-relevant hypertext pages; students' abilities in terms of reading linear texts, dealing with computer interfaces more generally, and evaluating the usefulness of online information were considered as underlying skills. We hypothesized that basic computer skills and evaluating online information would explain performance in digital reading above and beyond reading skills measured with linear texts. These effects were expected to be mediated by navigation behavior. A subsample of 15-year-old German students who participated in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 was investigated (N = 888). The results confirmed the hypothesized mediation between linear reading, navigation behavior, and digital reading. Moreover, navigation behavior also mediated the relation between basic computer skills and digital reading but not the relation between evaluating online information and digital reading. Implications regarding processes in digital reading and navigation of hypertexts are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The implementation of formative assessment strategies is challenging for teachers. We evaluated teachers' implementation fidelity of a curriculum-embedded formative assessment programme for primary school science education, investigating both material-supported, direct application and subsequent transfer. Furthermore, the relationship between implementation fidelity and teacher variables was explored. N = 17 German primary school teachers participated in professional development on formative assessment, N = 11 teachers formed a control group. Teachers' implementation fidelity was evaluated via classroom observations student ratings and an analysis of students' workbooks, focusing on the frequency and quality of intended formative assessment elements (assessments, feedback and instructional adaptations). Regarding direct application, treatment group teachers' implementation fidelity was high, with slight variations in quality. Regarding transfer, implementation fidelity was lower but teachers still implemented more formative assessment elements than the control group. Teachers' pedagogical content knowledge and their evaluation of the formative assessment intervention were associated with implementation success. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
We examined the incremental effect of academic interest on achievement beyond general cognitive ability and students' background characteristics in five domains (math, German, biology, chemistry, and physics). We analyzed a nationally representative German dataset of 39,192 ninth-grade students and found a unique effect of interest over and above the other predictors across the five domains, both for class grades and standardized test scores. The effect was present between persons (in a given domain, students with higher interest showed higher achievement) and within persons (the same student showed a higher achievement in domains she/he was more interested in). The effects were stronger for grades than test scores and stronger in math than in other domains. The results emphasize the positive relation between interest and academic achievement in different domains. Furthermore, they expand the literature by emphasizing the role of the achievement measure and the domain as moderators of the interest-achievement relation and by showing that interest can predict both inter- and intraindividual variation in achievement. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Different coping patterns for children's transition to secondary school have been reported in the literature, and the influence of the subjective anticipation of this critical life event has been discussed. The current study uses cognitive-transactional theory (Lazarus & Folkman, 1987) and establishes a connection between primary and secondary appraisals and well-being after the transition as well as the evaluation of the transition itself while studying a sample of students during the transition from grade 6 (primary school) to grade 7 (secondary school) in the district of Berlin, Germany. Using latent regression analyses, a significant effect was found of the anticipation of the transition on coping after the transition. In particular, positive appraisals were associated with a higher well-being and a more positive evaluation of the transition. Implications for theory and practice are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)
