Abstract (english):
Emotions and motivation are important prereq-uisites, mediators, and outcomes of learning and achieve-ment. In this article, we first review major theoretical approaches and empirical findings in research on students' emotions and motivation in mathematics, including a dis-cussion of how classroom instruction can support emo-tions and motivation. Based on this review, we encourage researchers from mathematics education and other dis-ciplines of educational research to combine their efforts. Second, we provide an overview of the contributions in this special issue, most of which reflect such a combination of efforts by considering perspectives from both mathematics education and other fields of educational research. Finally, we consider the neglect of intervention studies and outline directions for future research. We identify intervention studies that target emotions and motivation as one promis-ing but so far underrepresented line of research in mathe-matics education and review results from existing interven-tion studies. For future research, we suggest that researchers should implement fine-grained concepts, assessment instru-ments, theoretical hypotheses, and methods of analysis tai-lored to the specific features of the mathematical domain to adequately investigate students' emotions and motivation in this domain.

Abstract (english):
Formative assessment has been identified as a promising intervention to support students' learning. How to successfully implement this means of assessment, however, is still an open issue. This study contributes to the implementation of formative assessment by analyzing the impact of a training measure on teachers' formative feedback practice, with a special focus on mediating and moderating variables. Research questions are as follows: (1) Is there an indirect training effect on teachers' instructional feedback practice via (a) teachers' declarative feedback knowledge and (b) the ability to generate feedback in a test situation? (2) Is this indirect effect moderated by teachers' self-efficacy? A total of 67 secondary education mathematics teachers participated in the study, taking part in professional development either on formative assessment and feedback (PD-FA) or on mathematical modelling and problem solving (PD-PM). Training was provided in two sessions (T1 and T2; each lasting 3 days) with 10 weeks in between T1 and T2. Teachers' self-efficacy regarding feedback was measured before T1 with a questionnaire. Declarative feedback knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge were tested after T2. Teachers' instructional feedback practice was assessed with a student questionnaire (before T1 and 4-6 weeks after T2). Path analyses show that (1) there is no indirect training effect (PD-FA vs. PD-PM) on the development of teachers' feedback practices in mathematics instruction; but an indirect effect on the ability to generate feedback in a test situation via teachers' declarative feedback knowledge. Teachers participating in PD-FA show a higher level of declarative feedback knowledge than teachers in the PD-PM condition. Declarative feedback knowledge in turn is positively related to the ability to generate feedback in a test situation. (2) This indirect effect is moderated by teachers' self-efficacy. Teachers with a high level of self-efficacy are better able to use their knowledge to generate feedback in a test situation than teachers with a low level of self-efficacy. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Formative assessment is considered a promising approach to improving teaching and learning, especially in the Anglo-American literature. However, empirical evidence supporting this assumption is surprisingly weak. In this chapter, we introduce the concept of formative assessment by identifying the core components of formative assessment (assessment and feedback) and describing the way we assume formative assessment (via students' perception) affects learning processes and outcomes. Furthermore, we present the project "Conditions and Consequences of Classroom Assessment" (Co2CA), consisting of four studies in which we successively investigated the design and impact of formative assessment in mathematics instruction: (1) In a survey study, we described current practice of classroom assessment in mathematics, as perceived by teachers and students, and developed mathematical tasks as a basis for the assessment component in the following studies. (2) In an experimental study, we investigated the impact of written process-oriented feedback on learning in an internally valid setting. (3) In an intervention study, we implemented the instruments and results of the first two studies in mathematics instruction to analyze the impact of formative assessment in an ecologically valid setting. (4) Finally, we conducted a transfer study to make our results usable in educational practice: We developed a teacher training in formative assessment and investigated its impact on teachers' general pedagogical and pedagogical content knowledge. This chapter focuses on a description of the designs and selected results of Studies 3 and 4. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english):
We investigated students' emotions as intervening variables between teaching methods, motivational and performance prerequisites, and outcomes. 144 students from German schools were assigned to two conditions. In one condition, students were prompted to develop multiple solutions for modelling problems that were missing information. In the other condition, students had to find one solution for modelling problems that were not missing information. Students' interest and performance were measured before and after the 5-lesson teaching unit, and students' enjoyment and boredom were measured during the teaching unit. The path analyses revealed: (1) Students who developed more solutions enjoyed their mathematics lessons more and were less bored than students in the other condition; (2) Enjoyment affected students' interest and performance at posttest and mediated the effects of prompting them to find multiple solutions on interest at posttest; (3) Students' enjoyment during learning mediated the effects of prior interest on interest at posttest. Abstract (english):
Observational measures of instructional quality are used in both research and evaluation contexts. In European school evaluation systems, one main intended use of classroom observation results is to inform schools' instructional improvement efforts. This study examined the quality of such diagnostic information in the context of a school evaluation system in Germany. The factor analytic results indicate that the empirical structure of the observation instrument lacks correspondence with its original normative model but does mirror a five-factor model based on recent literature, including classroom management, two different aspects of student orientation, cognitive activation, and classroom assessment. The generalizability analyses show that both indicators and observers represent important sources of measurement error. Additionally, their magnitude is larger for shorter observations (lesson segments). At least two, sometimes three, observers and between five and ten indicators per dimension are needed to achieve sufficiently reliable results, but results importantly depend on which dimension of instructional quality is being assessed. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Teaching learning strategies is one important aspect of the consistently claimed promotion of self-regulated learning in classrooms. This study investigated the role of instructional context and teacher beliefs for teachers' promotion of learning strategies. Twenty mathematics teachers were videotaped for five lessons in the ninth grade. Three lessons on the Pythagorean Theorem (introductory unit) and two lessons on word problems (practice unit) represented the two different instructional contexts. An observation instrument was used to code the teachers' promotion of cognitive strategies (organization, elaboration) and metacognitive strategies (planning, monitoring and evaluation). Teacher beliefs were captured by questionnaire. Results show a tendency to teach cognitive strategies more in introductory lessons compared to practice lessons, while planning strategies are more often taught in practice lessons. Regarding teacher beliefs, traditional beliefs (e.g., a formalist view of mathematics) were negatively related to the promotion of some types of strategies (e.g., elaboration), while progressive beliefs (e.g., emphasis on an individual reference norm) were positively associated with teaching several strategy types (e.g., monitoring and evaluation). Thus, teacher beliefs seem to play a role for strategy teaching, which makes them a possible starting point for enhancing the promotion of self-regulated learning and a potential key factor in teacher training. Abstract:
Prompting students to construct multiple solutions for modelling problems with vague conditions has been found to be an effective way to improve students' performance on interest-oriented measures. In the current study, we investigated the influence of this teaching element on students' performance. To assess the impact of prompting multiple solutions in mathematics instruction compared with the prompting of a single solution, we conducted an experimental study with 144 ninth graders from six German classes from middle track schools. We had two experimental groups: In one experimental group, students were required to provide two solutions for modelling problems related to the topic of Pythagoras' theorem; in the other group, they were asked to find one solution for each problem. Students' performance in solving tasks with and without a connection to the real world was assessed before and after a five-lesson teaching unit. In addition, the number of solutions developed and students' experience of competence were assessed with a questionnaire during the teaching unit. The findings showed that, similar to previous studies, prompting students to find multiple solutions does not improve their performance directly. However, using path analysis, we found indirect effects of the treatment on students' performance via the number of solutions they developed and their experience of competence. (DIPF/Orig.)
