Abstract (english):
The chapter brings together the individual chapter perspectives on theorizing teaching and thus initiating exchanges among the authors on outstanding issues and discrepancies to provide insights for how research on teaching may move forward. The Delphi study conducted for this aim was based on summaries of the answers of all individual chapters on three questions; authors were asked to rate and comment on each other's ideas. Comparing ratings and comments exposed the variability in the contributors' perspectives on (a) the existence, degree of development, and grain size of theories of teaching (first question), (b) the attributes of theories of teaching (second question), and (c) the process of developing theories of teaching (third question).

Abstract:
In research on teaching, there is a tension between the intention to provide educational practice with clear and convertible recommendations and the wish to do justice to the whole complexity, contingency, uncertainty and ambiguity of social interactions. Multiple research paradigms address this tension in different ways. The chapter brings together two such contrasting paradigms: Teaching Effectiveness Research (TER), which uses quantitative methods for explaining and predicting criteria of "teaching success" with characteristics of teaching, and practice theories, which aim at reconstructing classroom practice to gain an understanding of the social order in the classroom without a priori assumptions regarding their desirability. Presenting a specific instantiation of TER, the Theory of Basic Dimensions of Teaching Quality (TBD), the chapter elaborates on two major limitations of TER in general, and TBD in particular: a simplistic concept of relations between teaching and learning and a lack of understanding of the dynamics of classroom interaction. To better understand, and to some extent overcome these limitations, the chapter critically reflects on TER/TBD by contrasting it with a practice theoretical perspective. Using these two paradigms, the paper advances the idea that the dialogue between paradigms can be inspiring for empirical research and theory-building. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This study aimed at examining the suitability of questionnaire instruments commonly used in large-scale assessments for measuring non-cognitive school effectiveness criteria. It focused on questions of reliability and validity for capturing changes in students within schools across time and the instruments' sensitivity to school effects. The aim was also to propose an approach for analyzing measurement invariance across levels and time simultaneously. The study used longitudinal data from the KESS (Kompetenzen und Einstellungen von Schülerinnen und Schülern [competencies and attitudes of students]) study, conducted in Hamburg, Germany. The sample is comprised of 17,926 students in 189 secondary schools. Data were collected three or four times. The results of the analyses show that all investigated scales are suitable in terms of reliability and validity. However, only the scale interest in mathematics is sensitive to school effects and therefore suitable as a school effectiveness criterion. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
There is a broad consensus that educational monitoring contains normative stipulations. However, as yet these lack theoretical substantiation. This article proposes the Capability Approach as a theoretical foundation. Educational systems would then be assessed on the basis of information about opportunities and freedoms to achieve capabilities they are offering to students and on the basis of their success in fostering the basic abilities necessary for realizing the capabilities. Abstract (english):
The present contribution takes up the theme of optimizing the 'other' by examining ways migrationrelated heterogeneity and difference, and in particular multilingualism, are pedagogically addressed in schools. It is based on a research project that uses a mixed-methods design to analyze schoolcultural differences in approaches to addressing migration-related heterogeneity and difference in the context of students who immigrated after the age of six into the German school system. Against this background, the contribution focuses, on the one hand, on connections between the Hallesche school-culture theory and a school-related educational migration research. On the other hand, it presents exemplary results from the quantitative sub-study concerning the ways different schools address multilingualism of their students. The results show - across schools - a strong monolingual orientation of schools. Yet, also differences between schools become apparent. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
As the field of social and emotional learning has developed and grown over the last decades, so too has the number of different programmes seek-ing to achieve various SEL goals, resulting in a significant body of research on the topic. Meanwhile, there has also been an increase in the number of programmes aimed at developing intercultural competencies. For the pur-pose of developing a new programme for social and emotional learning, we reviewed the key characteristics of existing evidence-based social, emo-tional and intercultural learning programmes, including their theoretical and conceptual backgrounds, content, methodological and organisation-al aspects, and their evaluation. This review has revealed multiple similar-ities between these two approaches (i.e. social and emotional and intercul-tural), presenting a rationale for their integration. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:

Abstract (english):
This chapter summarises and discusses how participants evaluated the HAND in HAND programme. It is based on responses to two questions asked during semi-structured focus group interviews which comprised part of a more comprehensive evaluation of the HAND in HAND programme. The findings complement the experimental outcome evaluation but they also serve a formative purpose, i.e. to help identify the starting points for improving the programme. In terms of the summative outcome evaluation, the results show that many participants liked the programme (particularly the teachers, less so the students) and that the programme had positive short-term effects on the participants' mood and on the group atmosphere in several groups. However, only a few participants observed long-term effects. One reason for the latter finding may be that many school staff groups reported difficulties in imple-menting exercises, practices or ideas from the programme within their everyday pedagogical practice. Hence, the programme could probably gain from including longer-term support with respect to implementation. Other suggestions for improvement derived from the interviews are designing the intervention according to a real 'whole-school' approach and better supporting the autonomy of students. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This chapter presents how the measures targeting social, emotional and intercultural/transcultural (SEI) competencies as well as classroom climate used to externally evaluate the HAND in HAND programme were developed and selected. In the first section, we describe the assessment strategy for our summative and formative evaluation, which consists of applying a multimethod approach that combines self-reports, other-reports, a sociometric measure, vignettes and interviews to measure possible effects of the HAND in HAND programme, find out how participants experienced the programmes and discover levers to help improve the programmes. In the second section, we look at the process of selecting the questionnaire scales based on a pilot study that was conducted in three countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Sweden). We conclude by presenting the final instruments used for the HAND in HAND programme evaluation. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
A principal focus of the evaluation of the HAND in HAND programme is tracing back causal effects on the student and/or school staff programmes. We investigate whether the programme had the expected effects on social, emotional and intercultural competencies (hereinafter SEI competencies) and classroom learning environments. In this chapter, we present results regarding the programme's effectiveness that are based on questionnaire scales from the student and school staff evaluation instrument. These results are part of the experimental outcome evaluation. We compare the experimental groups to the control group in the pre- and post-measurements. Our analysis of the short-term programme effects reveals some of the programme's expected effects in all participating countries. However, many effects in an unexpected direction were also observed. Hence, the HAND in HAND programme may be judged as effective, although its effects are complex and appear to be both positive and negative depending on the specific outcome being examined.
