Abstract:
Advances in computer technology and artificial intelligence create opportunities for developing adaptive language learning technologies which are sensitive to individual learner characteristics. This paper focuses on one form of adaptivity in which the difficulty of learning content is dynamically adjusted to the learner's evolving language ability. A pilot study is presented which aims to advance the (semi-)automatic difficulty scoring of grammar exercise items to be used in dynamic difficulty adaptation in an intelligent language tutoring system for practicing English tenses. In it, methods from item response theory and machine learning are combined with linguistic item analysis in order to calibrate the difficulty of an initial exercise pool of cued gap-filling items (CGFIs) and isolate CGFI features predictive of item difficulty. Multiple item features at the gap, context and CGFI levels are tested and relevant predictors are identified at all three levels. Our pilot regression models reach encouraging prediction accuracy levels which could, pending additional validation, enable the dynamic selection of newly generated items ranging from moderately easy to moderately difficult. The paper highlights further applications of the proposed methodology in the area of adapting language tutoring, item design and second language acquisition, and sketches out issues for future research. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The project "Modeling competencies with multidimensional item-response-theory models" examined different psychometric models for student performance in English as a foreign language. On the basis of the results of re-analyses of data from completed large scale assessments, a new test of reading and listening comprehension was constructed. The items within this test use the same text material both for reading and for listening tasks, thus allowing a closer examination of the relations between abilities required for the comprehension of both written and spoken texts. Furthermore, item characteristics (e.g., cognitive demands and response format) were systematically varied, allowing us to disentangle the effects of these characteristics on item difficulty and dimensional structure. This chapter presents results on the properties of the newly developed test: Both reading and listening comprehension can be reliably measured (rel = .91 for reading and .86 for listening). Abilities for both sub-domains prove to be highly correlated yet empirically distinguishable, with a latent correlation of .84. Despite the listening items being more difficult, in terms of absolute correct answers, the difficulties of the same items in the reading and listening versions are highly correlated (r = .84). Implications of the results for measuring language competencies in educational contexts are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract:
Wie können Kinder in ihrer Entwicklung wirkungsvoll gefördert werden? Welche Faktoren beeinflussen den Bildungserfolg von Kindern? Wie gehen pädagogische Fachkräfte mit der wachsenden Heterogenität in den Kindertageseinrichtungen und Schulen um? Mit Fragen dieser Art beschäftigen sich seit 2008 die Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler des Frankfurter IDeA-Zentrums. IDeA steht für Individual Development and Adaptive Education of Children at Risk. Abstract:
This study set out to examine the effects of a morpheme-based training on reading and writing in 5th and 6th graders (N=47), who have poor literacy skills and speak German as a second language. A computerized training, consisting of a visual computerized lexical decision task (comprising 2880 inflections and derivations, presented in 12 sessions), was designed to encourage fast morphological analysis in word processing. The children were divided between two groups: the one underwent a morpheme-based training, in which word-stems of words were presented for a limited duration, while pre- and suffixes remained on screen until response. Another group received a control training consisting of the same task, except that the duration of presentation of a non-morphological unit was restricted. In a Word Disruption Task, participants read words under three conditions: morphological separation (with symbols separating between the words' morphemes), non-morphological separation (with symbols separating between non-morphological units of words) and no-separation (with symbols presented at the beginning and end of each word). The group receiving the morpheme-based program improved more than the control group in terms of word reading fluency in the morphological condition. The former group also presented similar word reading fluency after training in the morphological condition and the in no-separation condition, thereby suggesting that the morpheme-based training contributed to the integration of morphological decomposition into the process of word recognition. At the same time, both groups similarly improved in other measures of word reading fluency. With regard to spelling, the morpheme-based training group showed a larger improvement than the control group in spelling of trained items, and a unique improvement in spelling of untrained items (untrained word-stems integrated into trained pre- and suffixes). The results further suggest some contribution of the morpheme-based training to performance in a standardized spelling task. The morpheme-based training did not, however, show any unique effect on comprehension. These results suggest that the morpheme-based training is effective in enhancing some basic literacy skill in the population examined, i.e. morphological analysis in word processing and the access to orthographic representations in spelling, with no specific effects on reading fluency and comprehension. Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
This German prevalence study examined disproportionate representation of language-minority students among children identified with learning disorder (LD) according to ICD-10 (WHO, 1992). Most German school achievement tests used in LD diagnostics do not provide separate norms for language-minority students, and thus do not take these children's second language status into account when evaluating their academic performance. Although this is likely to result in an LD overidentification of language-minority students, little is known about the magnitude of this effect. Therefore, we compared the estimation of LD prevalence between native German speaking students (n = 566) and language-minority students (n = 478) when pooled versus group-specific achievement norms were used for LD classification. Three important findings emerged from our study: Firstly, and as expected, significant disproportionality effects occurred under pooled norms. Specifically, the likelihood of being diagnosed with LD amounted to 14-18 % among native German speakers and nearly doubled to 25-30 % among language-minority students. Secondly, disproportionality varied as a function of LD subtype: Whereas no disproportionate representation was revealed for arithmetic LD (F81.2), overidentification of language-minority students was found for verbal LD subtypes (namely, reading disorder [F81.0], spelling disorder [F81.1], and mixed disorder of scholastic skills [F81.3]). Thirdly, disproportionality effects were absent when group-specific norms were used for LD classification that controlled for second-language issues. Challenges that have to be met when testing language-minority students for LD are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)
