Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Teachers' practices of student evaluation can be considered crucial to the implementation of embedded assessment systems. This article reports on two studies investigating these practices in detail. The first study examines teacher judgments about student achievement in terms of the grades awarded. It examines whether the grades awarded reflect two dimensions of students' achievement as well as learning behavior. It also explores whether teachers' grading is aligned with their instruction. In the second study, we analyze how teacher evaluation affects students' subsequent learning processes. This study utilizes feedback given to students by the teacher within classroom interaction as an indicator for student evaluation, and investigates the impact of two types of feedback, evaluative and informational, on student learning and motivation. The results of Study 1 show that both the dimensions of student achievement as well as involvement were found to contribute substantially to students' grades. Moreover, these contributions depended on teacher beliefs and instructional quality. The findings of Study 2 show that positive evaluative feedback in the classroom was associated with increased intrinsic motivation, whereas negative evaluative feedback was not related to motivation. Informational feedback was shown to foster motivation via emotional experience and cognitive processing. None of the feedback types examined had a significant impact on students' achievement development. Finally, implications of the two studies for the implementation of embedded classroom assessment and the investigation of its effects are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
The contribution ... is concerned with a video study that extended the design of other international comparative studies. In co-operation with a Swiss project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, it aimed at analysing domain-specific teaching and learning processes in mathematics. Besides using questionnaires for assessing the students' self-reported cognitive activity and motivation, mathematics lessons that dealt with the "Pythagoras Theorem" were videotaped. One focus of the project was to investigate how specific features of the learning environment are connected to the students' motivation and learning outcomes. The results showed that clear, systematic structuring is one of the essential components of good instruction and that this factor has an impact on both the motivation of students and their cognitive achievement. Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)
Abstract (english):
This paper presents results from part of the German-Swiss project "Quality of instruction and mathematical understanding in different cultures". The study asked which students the teachers interact with during mathematics instruction and how an over- or under-representation of individual students and groups of students affects the achievement development. Across all participating classes, the patterns of interaction and calling on students differed strongly. While in some classes, the student contributions were spread relatively equally across individual students or groups of students, in other classes, certain groups of students had clearly more opportunities for participation than others. Using multi-level analyses, the effects of an equal or non-equal distribution of student contributions in classwork are examined. For this purpose, data based on the analysis of teaching videos are combined with data from questionnaires and tests. (DIPF/Author)

Abstract:

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
