Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The study examines correlations between pedagogical teachers' beliefs, adaptive teaching in English lessons, and students' learning outcomes (achievement and well-being). The research question asks whether the latter connection is mediated by adaptive teaching. The study is based on the 'Drei-Länder-Studie' by Helmut Fend. The results show that pedagogical beliefs are related to adaptivity. The connection between these beliefs and the well-being of the students in English lessons is mediated by adaptivity but for the students' English achievement no mediation by adaptivity occurs. Abstract (english):
This study addresses preschool teachers' self-efficacy beliefs in assessment and promotion of children's early language, social-emotional, and mathematical skills. The aim of the study was to find out to what extent preschool teachers believe to be able to assess and promote those skills, respectively. In a sample of 368 German preschool teachers, average scores in all scales were quite homogenously high. However, average scores of self-efficacy beliefs between the domains differed, with self-efficacy beliefs regarding language skills being the strongest. Self-efficacy beliefs regarding assessment were stronger than in promotion in the social-emotional and the mathematical domain, but not in language. Yet, confirmatory factor analyses indicate that self-efficacy beliefs regarding assessment were highly correlated with self-efficacy beliefs regarding promotion of skills in all three domains. Possible explanations for these results and ideas for further research are discussed.

Abstract:
This study extends the classic constructive dialogue/debate between self-concept and self-efficacy researchers (Marsh, Roche, Pajares, & Miller, 1997) regarding the distinctions between these 2 constructs. The study is a substantive-methodological synergy, bringing together new substantive, theoretical, and statistical models and developing new tests of the classic jingle-jangle fallacy. We demonstrate that in a representative sample of 3,350 students from math classes in 43 German schools, generalized math self-efficacy and math outcome expectancies were indistinguishable from math self-concept, but were distinct from test-related and functional measures of self-efficacy. This is consistent with the jingle-jangle fallacies that are proposed. On the basis of pretest variables, we demonstrate negative frame-of-reference effects in social (big-fish-little-pond effect) and dimensional (internal/external frame-of-reference effect) comparisons for three self-concept-like constructs in each of the first 4 years of secondary school. In contrast, none of the frame-of-reference effects were significantly negative for either of the two self-efficacy-like constructs in any of the 4 years of testing. After controlling for pretest variables, each of the 3 self-concept-like constructs (math self-concept, outcome expectancy, and generalized math self-efficacy) in each of the 4 years of secondary school was more strongly related to posttest outcomes (school grades, test scores, future aspirations) than were the corresponding 2 self-efficacy-like factors. Extending discussion by Marsh et al. (1997), we clarify distinctions between self-efficacy and self-concept; the role of evaluation, worthiness, and outcome expectancy in self-efficacy measures; and complications in generalized and global measures of self-efficacy. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
In the context of implementing comprehensive school reforms, participants' perceptions are seen as crucial as their dealing with these processes. Principals play a key role in this regard. A comprehensive school reform presents the background to an analysis (N = 196 principals were surveyed) of the connection between principals' attitudes to this reform, and their actually dealing with it. On the one hand, scales were used to model the principals' assessments and expectations. Furthermore, based on the Stages of Concern Questionnaire (Hall & Hord, 2011), the dealing with the reform were moreover assessed. The study revealed that principals who principally had a positive attitude to the reform more actively dealt with it. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Background: Researchers often report and discuss gender differences. However, recent research has drawn attention to interaction effects between gender and other social categories. Aims: This study analysed the development of disparities in students' reading‐related self‐concept, intrinsic motivation, and behaviour, as they relate to differences in gender and socio‐economic family background. Drawing on expectancy‐value theory, we regarded reading‐related self‐concept, motivation, and behaviour as key to explaining the growing differences between boys and girls in adolescence. Specifically, we focused on the interaction between gender and socio‐economic background in children, which has been discussed in the context of moderating gender differences but not in the context of reading‐related attitudes and behaviour. Sample: The investigation is based on a longitudinal sample of N = 717 German students between third and sixth grades. Method: We used questionnaire data from both students and parents. To compare students' development across time, we applied multigroup latent growth curve models. Results: We found evidence of increasing gender differences, which were also moderated by the socio‐economic status (SES) of parents: a gender gap either already existed (intrinsic motivation and reading behaviour) or intensified (reading self‐concept and reading behaviour) between third and sixth grades. The interaction of gender and SES seemed particularly important for reading self‐concept, with the gender gap growing less substantially for higher‐SES children. Moreover, this pattern persisted for reading self‐concept, even when controlling for achievement differences. Conclusions: The results provide evidence that gender, social background, and the interaction of the two are relevant for development in the domain of reading, even in young children. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
In this study, we investigated conditions and consequences of teacher popularity in primary schools. Teacher popularity is embedded in a theoretical framework that describes relationships between teacher competence, teaching quality, and student outcomes. In the empirical analyses, we used multilevel modeling to distinguish between individual students' liking of the teacher and a teacher's popularity as rated by the whole class (N = 1070 students, 54 teachers). The classroom level composite of the extent to which students liked their teacher was a reliable indicator of teacher popularity. Teacher popularity was associated with teacher self-reports of self-efficacy and teaching enthusiasm and with external observers' ratings of teaching quality. The grades students received were not related to the popularity ratings. In a longitudinal study, teacher popularity predicted students' learning gains and interest development over and above the effects of teaching quality. These results suggest that teacher popularity can be a useful and informative indicator in research on students' academic development and teacher effectiveness. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Using data from 1,571 ninth-grade students (Mage = 14.62) from 82 academic track schools in Germany and their predominantly Caucasian middle-class parents, configurations of different family characteristics reported by parents were investigated. Latent profile analyses considering academic involvement, family interest, parents' self-concept, child's need for support, and parents' time and energy identified average, indifferent, motivated and engaged, motivated and disengaged, and involved families. Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations with students' motivational (self-concept, effort, and interest) and achievement outcomes (achievement test and grades) in math were analyzed. Students from families classified as motivated and disengaged showed higher initial levels motivation and achievement. Over 5 months, these students also showed an increase in self-concept and higher achievement than students from other family types. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The purpose of this study is to examine whether teacher enthusiasm and classroom management self-efficacy are related to classroom mastery orientation and student motivation. We used data from 803 students in grades 9 and 10 (53.3% girls) and their mathematics teachers (N = 41; 58.5% men). Student-perceived teacher enthusiasm was related to classroom mastery orientation as well as to intrinsic value and cost at the student level. Teacher-reported selfefficacy was related to classroom mastery orientation at the classroom level. At both the individual and the classroom level, classroom mastery orientation was related to attainment and utility value. (DIPF/Orig.)
