Abstract: Based on a sample of Year 1 vocational students (N = 962) in China, the study presented in this chapter aimed to (1) test the generalizability of the classic internal/external (I/E) frame of reference model of academic self-concept (Marsh, 1986) to vocational students and (2) extend the classic I/E model by incorporating recent developments of the twofold multidimensional structure of academic self-concept (i.e., its domain-specific structure and a further separation between competence-affect components within each domain). Structural equation modeling analyses for testing the I/E model show that paths from math and Chinese achievements to corresponding domains of self-concept were positive and significant, whereas cross-paths to nonmatching self-concept domains were negatively significant. A further analysis by separating competence and affect components within math and Chinese self-concepts reveals that paths from math and Chinese achievements to matching affect components were stronger than those to competence components. This interesting finding is discussed in light of the Chinese cultural model of learning. Implications of our findings for the I/E model, self-concept research, and practice are also discussed. Abstract: This book is a valuable attempt to address the issue of school effectiveness in mainland China. The author applies multi-level modeling and longitudinal student achievement and survey data to evaluate school effectiveness. In the first study, the author analyzes the effects of school resources and classroom processes on student achievement. He also investigates the size of school effects, and the differential school effects for different groups of students. The other two empirical studies focus on the value-added evaluation of academic performance in schools, including consistency, stability and robustness of value-added results. The author also discusses the policy implications of these empirical findings in the Chinese school system. (Verlag)

Abstract: Outcome-oriented evaluation of school effectiveness is often based on student test scores in certain critical examinations. This study provides another method of evaluation-value-added-which is based on student achievement progress. This paper introduces the method of estimating the value-added score of schools in multi-level models. Based on longitudinal student achievement data, two measures of school effectiveness in one local education authority in China are compared. It is found that the between-school difference in both test-score and value-added is large comparable with that of Western countries. The results of the two measures of school effectiveness are highly different. The value-added measures lack consistency across different subject areas within schools while the test score measures are highly correlated between subjects. Teachers show their preference for value-added measures over test-score measures of education quality. It is suggested that value-added measures of school effectiveness should be used as a complement to rather than a substitute for test-score measures. The shortcomings of value-added approach are also discussed.

Abstract: Der Begriff "BRICS" bezeichnet gemeinhin die Staaten Brasilien, Russland, Indien, China und Südafrika.
Abstract (english): Generally speaking, the term "BRICS" refers to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The abbreviation was coined in economics and first appeared in a paper presented by Goldman Sachs in 2001. Initially, the term "BRIC" (at the beginning without South Africa) was used to characterize "emerging markets" - triggering the economists' interest. Respective countries themselves began to co-operate as "BRIC" states in 2006 when their foreign secretaries met for the first time. Since 2009, annual BRICS Summits have been held by the respective heads of state; South Africa has participated in the Summits since 2011. What began as an economic label has now transformed into a collaboration of the states. Besides discussing economic issues, political and cultural collaboration are now being targeted. By presenting a web dossier, Education Worldwide places its focus on education and the collaborative efforts of the BRICS countries in this field. Furthermore, light is shed on the German engagement in and cooperation with the BRICS states, particularly concerning education. Our web dossier is organized as follows: Education in Brazil, Education in Russia; Education in India; Education in China; Education in South Africa; BRICS Cooperations.

Abstract (english): The ability to compare numerical magnitudes is assumingly related to children s arithmetic skills. The role of symbolic and non-symbolic number representations in this relationship is, however, still a matter of debate. To address this issue we assessed addition and subtraction skills of 8 10-year-old children (n 1 4 35) and asked them to compare numerical magnitudes of dot patterns and Arabic digits in different numerical ranges. Results revealed that the relationship between numerical magnitude comparisons and arithmetic skills is not restricted to symbolic stimuli, but that it can also be detected for non-symbolic dot patterns. The range of numerosities for which this relationship was found and the manner in which the magnitude comparison was related to arithmetic skills differed regarding the dots and digits. These findings highlight the role of both symbolic and non-symbolic number representations in the development of arithmetic skills and strengthen the view of different developmental trajectories underlying these representations.
