Abstract:
This report contains an analysis of the effective use of learner-generated data with a specific focus on teacher training. The use of learner-generated data in research is coined Learning Analytics. So far very little is published about learner-generated data in the context of teacher training. The following report aims to introduce teacher trainers, policymakers and practitioners to learning analytics. It defines learning analytics and describes the core dimensions of it, such as stakeholders, objectives, data, technologies, ethics & privacy, and required competencies to exploit the benefits of learning analytics. After a comprehensive introduction to learning analytics, the report shows practical examples of learning analytics applications. It describes how learner-generated data can be identified, captured, and visualised on learner analytics dashboards. It also provides examples of public-funded and commercial applications of learning that take advantage of learning analytics in schools these days. Finally, the report outlines a potential teacher training program inspired by university master programs on learning analytics. It also suggests two training scenarios (a low-tech and a high-tech scenario) that could be used for the training of teachers on learner-generated data. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
In this paper, we introduce shinyReCoR: a new app that utilizes a cluster-based method for automatically coding open-ended text responses. Reliable coding of text responses from educational or psychological assessments requires substantial organizational and human effort. The coding of natural language in responses to tests depends on the texts' complexity, corresponding coding guides, and the guides' quality. Manual coding is thus not only expensive but also error-prone. With shinyReCoR, we provide a more efficient alternative. The use of natural language processing makes texts utilizable for statistical methods. shinyReCoR is a Shiny app deployed as an R-package that allows users with varying technical affinity to create automatic response classifiers through a graphical user interface based on annotated data. The present paper describes the underlying methodology, including machine learning, as well as peculiarities of the processing of language in the assessment context. The app guides users through the workflow with steps like text corpus compilation, semantic space building, preprocessing of the text data, and clustering. Users can adjust each step according to their needs. Finally, users are provided with an automatic response classifier, which can be evaluated and tested within the process. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This study investigated to what extent multimodal data can be used to detect mistakes during Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training. We complemented the Laerdal QCPR ResusciAnne manikin with the Multimodal Tutor for CPR, a multi-sensor system consisting of a Microsoft Kinect for tracking body position and a Myo armband for collecting electromyogram information. We collected multimodal data from 11 medical students, each of them performing two sessions of two-minute chest compressions (CCs). We gathered in total 5254 CCs that were all labelled according to five performance indicators, corresponding to common CPR training mistakes. Three out of five indicators, CC rate, CC depth and CC release, were assessed automatically by the ReusciAnne manikin. The remaining two, related to arms and body position, were annotated manually by the research team. We trained five neural networks for classifying each of the five indicators. The results of the experiment show that multimodal data can provide accurate mistake detection as compared to the ResusciAnne manikin baseline. We also show that the Multimodal Tutor for CPR can detect additional CPR training mistakes such as the correct use of arms and body weight. Thus far, these mistakes were identified only by human instructors. Finally, to investigate user feedback in the future implementations of the Multimodal Tutor for CPR, we conducted a questionnaire to collect valuable feedback aspects of CPR training. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Was kann künstliche Intelligenz wirklich? Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)
Abstract (english):
The authors of the article analyse the software platform Antolin, that is very famous in german schools and should help to support reading literacy of students. But instead of liberating the student from using the platform, it ties them to the product and works therefore against the pedagogical aim of educating a mature subject. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Multi-view algorithms, such as co-training and co-EM, utilize unlabeled data when the available attributes can be split into independent and compatible subsets. Experiments have shown that multi-view learning is sometimes beneficial for problems for which the independence assumption is not satisfied. In practice, unfortunately, it is not possible to measure the dependency between two attribute sets; hence, there is no criterion which allows to decide whether multi-view learning is applicable. We conduct experiments with various text classification problems and investigate on the effectiveness of the co-trained SVM and the co-EM SVM under various conditions, including violations of the independence 0assumption. We identify the error correlation coefficient of the initial classifiers as an elaborate indicator of the expected benefit of multi-view learning. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
We present DKPro TC, a framework for supervised learning experiments on textual data. The main goal of DKPro TC is to enable researchers to focus on the actual research task behind the learning problem and let the framework handle the rest. It enables rapid prototyping of experiments by relying on an easy-to-use workflow engine and standardized document preprocessing based on the Apache Unstructured Information Management Architecture (Ferrucci and Lally, 2004). It ships with standard feature extraction modules, while at the same time allowing the user to add customized extractors. The extensive reporting and logging facilities make DKPro TC experiments fully replicable. (DIPF/Orig.)
