Abstract:
Abstract:
Expectancy-value theory (EVT) proposes that students' appraisals of success expectancy and task value are the main drivers of their study and career choices. Dimensional comparison theory proposes that these beliefs are themselves affected by students comparing their ability across different domains. However, only a few studies have aimed to integrate these approaches and clarify the role of dimensional comparisons within EVT. Using longitudinal data, we aimed to fill this gap by studying within- and cross-domain effects of achievement (grades and test scores), academic self-concept (as a surrogate for expectancy beliefs), and values on German adolescents' (N = 519) high school course choices and their intentions to major in a STEM subject at university. We show that (a) self-concepts predicted course choices, whereas values predicted STEM study intentions; (b) dimensional comparison patterns (positive within-domain and negative across-domain relations) were present; (c) gender differences in course choices were mediated by differences in achievement, self-concept, and value; and (d) there was an incremental gender effect on STEM study intentions above and beyond achievement, self-concept, value, and previous course choices. Furthermore, overall, a model incorporating cross-domain paths representing dimensional comparisons fit the data better than a model without these paths. We conclude that direct and indirect dimensional comparison effects contribute to predicting choices of high school courses and university majors and to understanding gender differences in these choices. We recommend that studies in the EVT framework include cross-domain effects. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Misconceptions about scientific concepts often prevail even if learners are confronted with conflicting evidence. This study tested the facilitative role of surprise in children's revision of misconceptions regarding water displacement in a sample of German children (N = 94, aged 6-9 years, 46% female). Surprise was measured via the pupil dilation response. It was induced by letting children generate predictions before presenting them with outcomes that conflicted with their misconception. Compared to a control condition, generating predictions boosted children's surprise and led to a greater revision of misconceptions (d = 0.56). Surprise further predicted successful belief revision during the learning phase. These results suggest that surprise increases the salience of a cognitive conflict, thereby facilitating the revision of misconceptions. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:

Abstract:
Large-scale educational surveys, including PISA, often collect student ratings to assess teaching quality. Because of the sampling design in PISA, student ratings must be aggregated at the school level instead of the classroom level. To what extent does school-level aggregation of student ratings yield reliable and valid measures of teaching quality? We investigate this question for six scales measuring classroom management, emotional support, inquiry-based instruction, teacher-directed instruction, adaptive instruction, and feedback provided by PISA 2015. The sample consisted of 503,146 students from 17,678 schools in 69 countries/regions. Multilevel CFA and SEM were conducted for each scale in each country/region to evaluate school-level reliability (intraclass correlations 1 and 2), factorial validity, and predictive validity. In most countries/regions, school-level reliability was found to be adequate for the classroom management scale, but only low to moderate for the other scales. Examination of factorial and predictive validity indicated that the classroom management, emotional support, adaptive instruction, and teacher-directed instruction scales capture meaningful differences in teaching quality between schools. Meanwhile, the inquiry scale exhibited poor validity in almost all countries/regions. These findings suggest the possibility of using student ratings in PISA to investigate some aspects of school-level teaching quality in most countries/regions. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The three basic dimensions framework for assessing quality teaching distinguishes the dimensions of cognitive activation, student support, and classroom management. Research from various disciplines suggest, however, that cognitive support is not sufficiently represented in the framework as yet. In the present study, two-level factor analyses based on student ratings of teaching quality in science education (2,659 students, grades 4 and 6) suggest four dimensions of teaching quality, with cognitive support being a separate dimension. Moreover, cognitive support predicted student achievement. The results suggest that including cognitive support as a separate dimension contributes to a more comprehensive, yet parsimonious framework of teaching quality. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The PISA studies provide unique opportunities to investigate the competencies and attitudes of 15-year-olds across the world. Past research investigating environmental awareness (EA) in PISA 2006 found associations between EA and science-related competencies and attitudes. Investigating EA in the PISA studies may have important implications for education for sustainable development (ESD): results may show which factors should be considered in educational interventions to enhance students' EA. Cross-national analyses of EA may provide insights into the predictors of EA on a local, national or international level. This study investigates the individual, school, and country level predictors of EA in PISA 2015 (365,194 students, 12,594 schools, 53 countries). The multi-level regression analysis on EA reveals that most of the variance is located at the student level. On the individual level, variables related to science learning in school are associated with EA across all countries. This study also compares the degrees of EA in the 2006 and 2015 populations. The results show similar degrees of EA in 2006 and 2015. Altogether, the study provides cross-country evidence on important aspects that should be addressed in successful ESD programs. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
In this contribution, we investigate links between teacher competence, teaching quality, and student outcomes in elementary science education. Students' conceptual understanding and interest were measured during two teaching units in a pre-post design (1070 students, 54 classes). Results show that teacher competence (pedagogical content knowledge, self-efficacy, and teaching enthusiasm) was positively related to students' interest; self-efficacy was positively related to student achievement. Three dimensions of teaching quality (cognitive activation, supportive climate, and classroom management), which refer to the actual teacher-student-interactions in the classroom, mediated these relationships. These results help illuminate the mechanisms behind the effects of teachers on student outcomes.

Abstract:
Noncognitive assessments in Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study share certain similarities and provide complementary information, yet their comparability is seldom checked and convergence not sought. We made use of student self-report data of Instrumental Motivation, Enjoyment of Science and Sense of Belonging to School targeted in both surveys in 29 overlapping countries to (1) demonstrate levels of measurement comparability, (2) check convergence of different scaling methods within survey and (3) check convergence of these constructs with student achievement across surveys. We found that the three scales in either survey (except Sense of Belonging to School in PISA) reached at least metric invariance. The scale scores from the multigroup confirmatory factor analysis and the item response theory analysis were highly correlated, pointing to robustness of scaling methods. The correlations between each construct and achievement was generally positive within each culture in each survey, and the correlational pattern was similar across surveys (except for Sense of Belonging), indicating certain convergence in the cross-survey validation. We stress the importance of checking measurement invariance before making comparative inferences, and we discuss implications on the quality and relevance of these constructs in understating learning.
