Abstract:
In large-scale assessments, performance differences across different groups are regularly found. These group differences (e.g., gender differences) are often relevant for educational policy decisions and measures. However, the formation of these group differences usually remains unclear. We propose an approach for investigating this formation by considering behavioral process measures as mediating variables between group membership and performance on the 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment complex problem solving (CPS) items. We found that across all investigated countries interactive behavior can fully explain gender differences in CPS, but cannot explain differences between students with and without a migration background. However, in some countries these results differ from the cross-country results. Our results indicate that process measures derived from log data are useful for further investigating and explaining performance differences between girls and boys and students with and without migration background. Abstract:
In this explorative study, we investigate how sequences of behaviour are related to success or failure in complex problem‐solving (CPS). To this end, we analysed log data from two different tasks of the problem‐solving assessment of the Programme for International Student Assessment 2012 study (n = 30,098 students). We first coded every interaction of students as (initial or repeated) exploration, (initial or repeated) goal‐directed behaviour, or resetting the task. We then split the data according to task successes and failures. We used full‐path sequence analysis to identify groups of students with similar behavioural patterns in the respective tasks. Double‐checking and minimalistic behaviour was associated with success in CPS, while guessing and exploring task‐irrelevant content was associated with failure. Our findings held for both tasks investigated, from two different CPS measurement frameworks. We thus gained detailed insight into the behavioural processes that are related to success and failure in CPS. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Imageability and emotionality ratings for 2592 German nouns (3-10 letters, one to three phonological syllables) were obtained from younger adults (21-31 years) and older adults (70-86 years). Valid ratings were obtained on average from 20 younger and 23 older adults per word for imageability, and from 18 younger and 19 older adults per word for emotionality. The internal consistency (Cronbach's α) and retest rank-order stability of the ratings were high for both age groups (α and r ≥ .97). Also, the validity of our ratings was found to be high, as compared to previously published ratings (r ≥ .86). The ratings showed substantial rank-order stability across younger and older adults (imageability, r = .94; emotionality, r = .85). At the same time, systematic differences between age groups were found in the mean levels of ratings (imageability, d = 0.38; emotionality, d = 0.20) and in the extent to which the rating scales were used (imageability, SD = 24 vs. 19, scale of 0 to 100; emotionality, SD = 26 vs. 31, scale of −100 to 100). At the descriptive level, our data hint at systematically different evaluations of semantic categories regarding imageability and emotionality across younger and older adults. Given that imageability and emotionality have been reported, for instance, as important determinants for the recognition and recall of words, our findings highlight the importance of considering age-specific information in age-comparative cognitive (neuroscience) experimental studies using word materials. The age-specific imageability and emotionality ratings for the 2592 German nouns can be found in the electronic supplementary material 1. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
For decades, self-report instruments - which rely heavily on students' perceptions and beliefs - have been the dominant way of measuring motivation and strategy use. An event-based measure based on online trace data arguably has the potential to remove analytical restrictions of self-report measures. The purpose of this study is therefore to triangulate constructs suggested in theory and measured using self-reported data with revealed online traces of learning behaviour. The results show that online trace data of learning behaviour are complementary to self-reports, as they explained a unique proportion of variance in student academic performance and reveal that self-reports explain more variance in online learning behaviour of prior weeks than variance in learning behaviour in succeeding weeks. Student motivation is, however, to a lesser extent captured with online trace data, likely because of its covert nature. In that respect, it is of importance to recognize the crucial role of self-reports in capturing student learning holistically. This manuscript is 'frontline' in the sense that event-based measurement methodologies using online trace data are relatively unexplored. The comparison with self-report data made in this manuscript sheds new light on the added value of innovative and traditional methods of measuring motivation and strategy use. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Open informational ecosystems play a crucial role in fostering open educational resources (OER) and allow new opportunities to share and collaborate in the learning and teaching environment. Such ecosystems containing interoperable infrastructures and open interfaces aim at fulfilling user needs and fostering practices related to the concept of OER and the five user rights (5 R's). To fully embrace this role, those ecosystems need to be designed carefully. In this paper, we discuss implications for open informational ecosystems to fully comprise the concept of OER and related user needs. We carried out literature reviews to analyse recent aspects of the 5 R's in relation to user behaviour and infrastructures. We will introduce the results from these reviews and illustrate upcoming questions and challenges for the design of an ecosystem respecting the 5 R's conceptual ideas. With our recommendations, we aim at contributing to a better understanding of the concept of OER to improve ecosystem development and implement useful and user-friendly functions.

Abstract:
The Generalized Internal/External Frame of Reference Model offers a framework according to which the perception of teacher characteristics might impact on students' motivation within and between subjects. In the present study, relations between perceived teacher unfairness and student motivation in math and German were examined. In a sample of N = 1685 German secondary school students, perceived teacher unfairness was found to be negatively related with student self-concept, interest, and importance of doing well on the task within the subjects of math and German, while being positively related with the three aspects of student motivation between subjects. Mediation analyses revealed partial mediation through academic self-concept within, and complete mediation between subjects. The results imply that students' motivation in one subject is not only related to perceived teacher characteristics in the corresponding subject, but also to the experiences that these students make with teachers in another subject. Abstract (english):
Introduction. Systematic reviews are a method to synthesise research results for evidence-based decision-making on a specific question. Processes of information seeking and behaviour play a crucial role and might intensively influence the outcomes of a review. This paper proposes an approach to understand the relevance assessment and decision-making of researchers that conduct systematic reviews. Method. A systematic review was conducted to build up a database for text-based qualitative analyses of researchers' decision-making in review processes. Analysis. The analysis focuses on the selection process of retrieved articles and introduces the method to investigate relevance assessment processes of researchers. Results. There are different methods to conduct reviews in research, and relevance assessment of documents within those processes is neither one-directional nor standardised. Research on information behaviour of researchers involved in those reviews has not looked at relevance assessment steps and their influence in a review's outcomes. Conclusions. A reason for the varieties and inconsistencies of review types might be that information seeking and relevance assessment are much more complex and researchers might not be able to draw upon their concrete decisions. This paper proposes a research study to investigate researcher behaviour while synthesising research results for evidence-based decision-making.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
In research on teaching, the primary focus lies in identifying teacher behavior that positively influences relevant student outcomes. To adequately design the study, statistically model and interpret the results poses challenges for researchers. For example, the inherent multilevel structure in studies on teaching requires the application of multilevel models. This research used one exemplary data set, to which varying multilevel models were applied, thus illustrating how these models variously affect the substantial interpretation of the research question. The research question in all settings concerned the effects of teacher behavior on student outcomes. The overall purpose of this paper is to give an overview of modeling and interpreting results regarding the effectiveness of teaching appropriately. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Rapid guessing can threaten measurement invariance and the validity of large-scale assessments, which are often conducted under low-stakes conditions. Comparing measures collected under different administration modes or in different test settings necessitates that rapid guessing rates also be comparable. Response time thresholds can be used to identify rapid guessing behavior. Using data from an experiment embedded in an assessment of university students as part of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), we show that rapid guessing rates can differ across modes. Specifically, rapid guessing rates are found to be higher for un-proctored individual online assessment. It is also shown that rapid guessing rates differ across different groups of students and are related to properties of the test design. No relationship between dropout behavior and rapid guessing rates was found. (DIPF/Orig.)
