Abstract (english):
Anxiety is common in late adulthood and can complicate adjustment in several areas. This study used data from 2 measurement points of a representative European longitudinal study (Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe) with a large sample size (N 28,326) and a broad age range (45-90) to examine age effects on cross-sectional mean levels of anxiety as well as longitudinal mean-level changes over 2 years with respect to gender, education, and changes in physical and cognitive functioning. Furthermore, we analyzed generalizability of the findings for different European countries. Latent change models and locally weighted smoothing curves revealed 3 main findings: (1) Mean levels of anxiety were relatively stable over the course of middle adulthood and increased during late adulthood, (2) women and individuals with less education were more anxious than men and individuals with more education, and (3) increases in anxiety in late adulthood were associated with age-associated losses in physical and cognitive functioning. Abstract:
Objectives: Associations between social support and health are studied since decades. Yet, little is known about how they vary by state versus trait aspects of support and by adult age. At trait and state level, the current study investigates direct associations between social support and health and whether support buffers the daily negative affect (NA)-health association in 2 age groups. Method: Seventy-nine younger and 88 older adults (OA) participated in 20 daily assessments of NA, health complaints (HC), and available support. On trait and state levels, 3 support facets - emotional, informational, and instrumental - were distinguished; social integration was assessed on the trait level. Results: For OA, trait emotional support was associated with fewer HC. In both age groups, state informational support was related to more daily HC. Social integration buffered the daily NA-health association in younger adults (YA), whereas informational support amplified the same association in OA. Discussion: We propose that 2 different mechanisms are relevant for younger and OA and at state and trait level. Although emotional support may be a resource for OA, informational support may enhance their daily complaints. YA seem to benefit from being socially integrated. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Objective: Little is known about genetic contributions to individual differences in cognitive plasticity. Given that the neurotransmitter dopamine is critical for cognition and associated with cognitive plasticity, we investigated the effects of 3 polymorphisms of dopamine-related genes (LMX1A, DRD2, COMT) on baseline performance and plasticity of working memory (WM), perceptual speed, and reasoning. Method: One hundred one younger and 103 older adults underwent approximately 100 days of cognitive training, and extensive testing before and after training. We analyzed the baseline and posttest data using latent change score models. Results: For working memory, carriers of the val allele of the COMT polymorphism had lower baseline performance and larger performance gains from training than carriers of the met allele. There was no significant effect of the other genes or on other cognitive domains. Conclusions: We relate this result to available evidence indicating that met carriers perform better than val carriers in WM tasks taxing maintenance, whereas val carriers perform better at updating tasks. We suggest that val carriers may show larger training gains because updating operations carry greater potential for plasticity than maintenance operations. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Environmental gerontology has adopted a social cohesion perspective on social capital, defining social capital as a neighborhood-level characteristic rather than a property of the individual. This chapter will discuss the macro-micro relationship between social capital and healthy ageing by focusing on the role of mediating concepts indicating both the relevance of the perceived socio-physical environment for the person (e.g., urban-related identity) and processes of engagement in the community (e.g., social participation). We consider individuals' subjective definitions of neighborhood boundaries in geographical space in our attempt to assure a valid mapping of person-environment references. Based on both a phenomenological approach and a comprehensive survey with 595 community-dwelling urban citizens (Frankfurt/Main, Germany) stratified by age (70-79 vs. 80-89 years) and household composition (living alone vs. with partner), a variety of constituents of perceived neighborhood in old age are identified that clearly challenge some of the common (census tract-oriented) notions of what defines a neighborhood and point to potential mechanisms of neighboring that have been neglected in most current studies of social capital. On a descriptive level, disparities with respect to aspects of healthy ageing and social participation are described across shared perceived neighborhoods using a multi-level approach. Finally, we test the hypothesis that neighborhood-level social capital moderates the effects of social participation on healthy ageing. The consequences of perceived social capital in the neighborhood for agency and belonging components of ageing in place (i.e., place identity, social participation), and, ultimately, for healthy ageing in urban neighborhoods are revisited. Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between capacity to consent to treatment as measured by the MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool for Treatment (MacCAT-T) and severity of cognitive impairment as measured with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). It also looks at the role of verbal retrieval in this relationship. We hypothesized that the often-quoted correlation between the MacCAT-T and the MMSE lies mainly in the joint dependence on verbal retrieval ability. Potential subjects were recruited from memory clinics, senior citizen meeting places, and a university program for seniors. Data of 149 people over 54 years, 49 of whom had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or mixed dementia, were used. The relationship between capacity to consent to treatment, verbal retrieval, and MMSE was examined using a structural equation modeling framework. The findings suggest that verbal retrieval is a confounding method factor. In the informed consent process for people with dementia, verbal memory loads should be minimized to provide a more valid measure of their capacity to consent to treatment. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Person-environment relationships become particularly important in later life. Our discussion of challenges in the assessment of experiential person-environment exchange processes is grounded on a four-domain model of perceived housing. We present empirical findings from an iterative process of instrument revision seeking optimization of both reliability and validity issues regarding controlrelated and meaning-oriented domains of perceived housing. Our initial reconstruction, however, was not confirmed to represent a consistent and reliable measure for the suggested dimensions of housing-related identity, privacy, and autonomy. Exploratory posthoc analyses of the pilot pool of indicators suggests six holistic facets, such as "daily independence" "neighborhood belonging", "mirror of self", "continuity and remaining in place" and "being alone and at peace". Plausible content-related interpretation and relations to major background characteristics encourage the continuous task of tailoring assessment instruments to meet the holistic character of housing experiences in later life.

Abstract (english):
Background: Collaborating with another person may help people compensate for aging-related losses in memory performance. However, collaborating in itself is effortful and draws upon individual cognitive resources. One factor that can facilitate collaboration, and decrease its resource requirements, is familiarity between interaction partners. Such facilitation should be particularly important when cognitive-mechanic resources are low. Objective: The current study was conducted to empirically test this theoretical notion. We hypothesized that cognitive aging should amplify the advantage of collaborating with a familiar partner over collaborating with an unfamiliar person. Methods: We developed an interpersonal cueing task based on the game Taboo. The task modeled an everyday-life situation in which one person cues another person to retrieve a piece of information from memory. Seventy-six younger adults (20 33 years) and 80 older adults (63 79 years) worked on this task once with their spouse and once with an unfamiliar cross-sex partner from the same age group. Collaborative performance was operationalized as the number of cue words needed until the partner guessed the target, as determined by independent trained coders. Performance in the Digit Symbol Substitution Test was used as an indicator of cognitive aging. Results: Multilevel-modeling analyses revealed that collaborating spouses outperformed collaborators who had not known each other before. This effect was comparable for both age groups but larger in persons with lower Digit Symbol scores. While participants with lower Digit Symbol scores generally performed worse in the collaborative task, they partly made up for this difference when working with the spouse. Conclusion: We conclude that spousal collaboration may offer a compensatory strategy to cope with individual aging-related losses. (DIPF/Autor)
