Educational Measurement

Researchers of the research unit "Educational Measurement" investigate how educational outcomes and the effects of learning opportunities can be measures. To this end, it deals with the necessary methodological foundations.


The research unit "Educational Measurement" investigates how theoretical models of constructs can be empirically tested and incorporated into psychometric models. Constructs are characteristics, such as linguistic or mathematical skills, that are measured by tests.

In the area of educational outcomes, the team develops psychometric modeling that translates theoretical models into empirical measurements. It also develops diagnostic procedures to assess specific constructs such as linguistic or mathematical competencies.

Another focus is on how learning opportunities affect the learning of skills, such as linguistic competences. Here the emphasis is on statistical models for effect estimation, appropriate designs for empirical studies, and the replicability of effects reported, for example, in classroom research.

In addition to the aforementioned measurement methodological foci, the research area has a substantive focus on education for sustainable development (ESD).

The department of Teacher and Teaching Quality (TTQ) focuses on the investigation of quality and effectiveness of educational processes.
