ABIBA | Meta – Overcoming educational barriers: Learning Environments, Educational Success and Social Participation

The aim of the project is to network and support the research projects on the reduction of educational barriers, to produce research syntheses on previous knowledge, to conduct research on transfer and to communicate the new findings.

Project Description

The meta-project ABIBA | Meta accompanies, supports and networks 12 projects from the funding directive of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) on "Overcoming educational barriers: Learning Environments, Educational Success and Social Participation" („Abbau von Bildungsbarrieren: Lernumwelten, Bildungserfolg und soziale Teilhabe“). The main research question is how educational inequalities by social background can be compensated for or prevented as early as possible. The different research projects of the funding directive in the Framework Programme for Empirical Educational Research investigate how a successful mitigation of educational barriers can be achieved. ABIBA | Meta promotes exchange and cooperation in the projects over a period of five years. The meta-project supports the projects in the areas of research, monitoring and transfer and establishes a network through information, consulting and workshops. It prepares research syntheses on the main research of the funding directive and integrates the projects’ research findings into these syntheses. Various goals are pursued in the area of transfer: On the one hand, scientific findings are communicated to educational practice, administration, politics, the public at large and the scientific community. On the other hand, a special focus is placed on developing systematic transfer strategies and transfer products together with the projects to reduce educational barriers, involving all groups of addressees from politics to practice. In addition, ABIBA | Meta investigates the transfer process.

ABIBA | Meta is an interdisciplinary collaborative project. DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education is the general coordinator with its subproject on research syntheses and research data management. In cooperation, the Freie Universität Berlin targets the subproject on transfer and the German Youth Institute (DJI) focuses on the subproject on research syntheses and research data management.

Project Objectives

A first goal is to examine the current state of research on reducing educational barriers, a second goal is networking through exchange among the participants and a third goal is to support the projects, for example on methodological and transfer-related topics.
