KoaLa – Cognitively Activating and Collaborative Learning Opportunities

The KoaLa-project is part of the nationwide research network "Schule macht stark" (SchuMaS). It deals with the research and design of cognitively activating and collaborative learning opportunities.

Project Description

In SchuMaS, measures are being developed with 200 partner schools nationwide to improve the learning conditions and learning performance of students at schools in socially challenging situations. In the KoaLa project – as part of SchuMaS – we are developing professional development courses in which we work together with teachers on cognitively activating teaching concepts. As a promising method of activating teaching, cooperative and collaborative learning is tested and reflected.

However, by developing and offering this professional development course, we not only want to support teaching and learning practice at the participating schools. We also want to better understand the extent to which cognitively activating and cooperative or collaborative learning opportunities are offered in practice. This includes the question of what knowledge and ideas as well as attitudes teachers have on these topics and what hurdles and potentials they experience in everyday teaching when they offer cognitively activating lessons – especially in group work. Likewise, the influences of cooperative learning on the students will be examined – especially with the question of how the different (e.g. linguistic) learning prerequisites of students affect learning in small groups.

Project Objectives

In collaboration with teachers, we work on researching and designing cognitively activating and collaborative learning opportunities. The overriding goal of the measure is to improve the learning conditions and learning performance of children at schools in socially challenging situations.
