Abstract (english): The chapter is a highly selected summary of a large scale project, which began in 1984, and aimed at the analysis of moral judgments implied in the tension between economic and ecological orientations in real life contexts. Hence, the study does not aim at the investigation of "eco-ethics" in the narrow sense of the word, but at the analysis of the role of moral arguments in the context of an environmental problem. Moral judgments are defined by three approaches which entail increasing amounts of contextualization. (a) They are defined by the decontextualized Heinz-dilemma, (b) by a contextualized (fictitious) dilemma that refers to the construction of a real power plant, and (c) by "types of everyday morality", derived from biographical interviews. With increasing contextualization, non-moral dimensions also increase in their relevance: (a) propositional knowledge, i.e. technical, economic, historical aspects of the case, (b) motivational factors, ( c) control theories, and (d) emotional involvement in the problem. The study is based on a theory (action theory) and method (dilemma core and biographical interviews) which is derived from, but also deviates in some respects from the one KOHLBERG developed. The study quite generally demonstrates the fruitfulness of combining the developmental psychological theory of moral judgments with environmental issues.
