Abstract (english):
We introduce the task of detecting cross-lingual marketing blunders, which occur if a trade name resembles an inappropriate or negatively connotated word in a target language. To this end, we suggest a formal task definition and a semi-automatic method based the propagation of pragmatic labels from Wiktionary across sense-disambiguated translations. Our final tool assists users by providing clues for problematic names in any language, which we simulate in two experiments on detecting previously occurred marketing blunders and identifying relevant clues for established international brands. We conclude the paper with a suggested research roadmap for this new task. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
In many language learning scenarios, it is important to anticipate spelling errors. We model the spelling difficulty of words with new features that capture phonetic phenomena and are based on psycholinguistic findings. To train our model, we extract more than 140,000 spelling errors from three learner corpora covering English, German and Italian essays. The evaluation shows that our model can predict spelling difficulty with an accuracy of over 80% and yields a stable quality across corpora and languages. In addition, we provide a thorough error analysis that takes the native language of the learners into account and provides insights into cross-lingual transfer effects. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Stand: 16. Februar 2016 (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Many immigrants entering Germany are from Arabic-speaking countries and seeking information for a first orientation, introducing them to asylum seeking procedures, first German words and phrases, the health system or courses of education in Germany. This website introduces refugee aid workers and asylum seekers to a variety of sources covering aspects of language learning, first steps, and other material available in Arabic. Please note that due to current developments particularly in asylum legislation, we cannot assure respective information is in all cases up to date. This website was compiled on February 15. 2016. Abstract (english):
The study investigates the effect of immigrant bilingualism on learning English as a foreign language, controlling for confounding background variables and examining the effect of proficiency in the instructional language at school. Using a sample of 2835 German 6th-graders (Arabic-German: n = 105, Chinese-German: n = 110, Polish-German: n = 57, Turkish-German: n = 383, heterogeneous bilingual: n = 284, and monolingual German group: n = 1896), we examined if speaking another language at home in addition to the instructional language at school presents an advantageous condition for learning English as a foreign language. Controlling for cognitive abilities, age, gender, socio-economic status, parental education, and indicators of cultural capital, the analysis revealed a general positive trend between bilingualism and English foreign language achievement. This positive trend differs significantly between bilingual groups with different home languages. The strongest predictor for foreign language learning revealed to be proficiency in the instructional language. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)
Abstract (english):
The reform of the lower secondary education (the so-called "collège") [in France] is the second step of the educational reform called "Refondons l`école" (Let`s re-establish school) of the government under François Hollande in France. In March 2015, the minister for education Najat Vallaud-Belkacem presented the planned reform of the collège. More interdisciplinarity during the classes, a greater autonomy for the collèges in structuring their schedules, beginning earlier with the second foreign language - the reform proposes a multitude of changes. Yet, there is one change that even launched an transnational debate between France and Germany: the intended changes to the German language classes in France. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:
Language proficiency tests are used to evaluate and compare the progress of language learners. We present an approach for automatic difficulty prediction of C-tests that performs on par with human experts. On the basis of detailed analysis of newly collected data, we develop a model for C-test difficulty introducing four dimensions: solution difficulty, candidate ambiguity, inter-gap dependency, and paragraph difficulty. We show that cues from all four dimensions contribute to C-test difficulty. (DIPF/Org.)

Abstract:
In this paper, we analyse the differences between L1 acquisition and L2 learning and identify four main aspects: input quality and quantity, mapping processes, cross-lingual influence, and reading experience. As a consequence of these differences, we conclude that L1 readability measures cannot be directly mapped to L2 readability. We propose to calculate L2 readability for various dimensions and for smaller units. It is particularly important to account for the cross-lingual influence from the learner's L1 and other previously acquired languages and for the learner's higher experience in reading. In our analysis, we focus on lexical readability as it has been found to be the most influential dimension for L2 reading comprehension. We discuss the features frequency, lexical variation, concreteness, polysemy, and context specificity and analyse their impact on L2 readability. As a new feature specific to L2 readability, we propose the cognateness of words with words in languages the learner already knows. A pilot study confirms our assumption that learners can deduce the meaning of new words by their cognateness to other languages. (DIPF/Orig.)
