Abstract: Data science in education has been coined as 'Learning Analytics', an umbrella term for research questions from overlapping research domains such as psychology, educational science, computer and data science. Despite the great enthusiasm currently surrounding LA, there are substantial questions for research and organisational development that have brought the implementation of LA to a hold, and in some prominent cases have even reversed it due to concerns by governments, stakeholders and civil rights groups about privacy and ethics applied to the handling of personal data. The new General Data Protection Regulation 2018 (GDPR) adds another layer of the complexity to the application of LA in Europe. This all raises a climate that demands a different approach to Learning Analytics in Europe and especially in Germany. Within this article, we shortly describe what Learning Analytics is, highlight the concerns that come with the application of LA, and finally draw a new approach towards LA that we call: Trusted Learning Analytics. Abstract (english): Educational practitioners have stressed the relevance of providing learners with a set of 21th century skills that will allow them to face current life challenges. Among others this includes communication and social skills such as public speaking, argumentation, negotiation, etc. Besides the acquisition of knowledge and techniques, these skills have the special characteristic that their performance is usually conducted under emotionally charged and stressful situations. Recent advances in technology have allowed the creation of digital applications to support learners with the development of techniques for this type of skills. However, supporting learners on the preparation of a mindset that allows them to perform well under emotionally charged circumstances is an area that technology enhanced learning has practically overlooked. To examine this gap, we developed the Booth, an application designed to get learners into a powerful and resourceful emotional state. In this article we present a two-step user study. Results of the first evaluation show that the use of the Booth induced a positive emotional state on users. Results from the second step suggest that using the Booth helps learners to emotionally prepare for public speaking. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Learning analytics can bridge the gap between learning sciences and data analytics, leveraging the expertise of both fields in exploring the vast amount of data generated in online learning environments. A typical learning analytics intervention is the learning dashboard, a visualisation tool built with the purpose of empowering teachers and learners to make informed decisions about the learning process. Related work has investigated learning dashboards, yet none have explored the theoretical foundation that should inform the design and evaluation of such interventions. In this systematic literature review, we analyse the extent to which theories and models from learning sciences have been integrated into the development of learning dashboards aimed at learners. Our analysis revealed that very few dashboard evaluations take into account the educational concepts that were used as a theoretical foundation for their design. Furthermore, we report findings suggesting that comparison with peers, a common reference frame for contextualising information on learning analytics dashboards, was not perceived positively by all learners. We summarise the insights gathered through our literature review in a set of recommendations for the design and evaluation of learning analytics dashboards for learners. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Teachers design learning activities purposefully to improve student learning. However, the impact of this is usually only evaluated after a course has ended by making use of self-reported data and assessment results. Learning analytics offers the opportunity to collect, analyse and visualise feedback on activities using authentic data in real-time. Incorporating learning analytics into the learning design makes just-in-time interventions attainable. This paper presents the first steps of the development of a Learning Analytics for Learning Design (LA4LD) tool that is co-created with students and teachers, using a design-based research methodology. Both teachers and students express the need to personalise feedback on learning activities in order to increase the quality of the learning process and want that embedded in the tool. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Studies in Learning Analytics provide concrete examples of how the analysis of direct interactions with learning management systems can be used to optimize and understand the learning process. Learning, however, does not necessarily only occur when the learner is directly interacting with such systems. With the use of sensors, it is possible to collect data from learners and their environment ubiquitously, therefore expanding the use cases of Learning Analytics. For this reason, we developed the Multimodal Learning Hub (MLH), a system designed to enhance learning in ubiquitous learning scenarios, by collecting and integrating multimodal data from customizable configurations of ubiquitous data providers. In this paper, we describe the MLH and report on the results of tests where we explored its reliability to integrate multimodal data. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: In this PhD thesis, a visual interface for text analysis and text mining in the digital humanities (DH) will be developed. Text analysis is a crucial task in the DH, but advanced text mining technologies like topic modeling or clustering are difficult to use for most researchers. My work bridges this gap using visualizations. To ensure an adequate usability of visualizations for epistemological practices, the visualizations will be realized with researchers in an agile and participatory approach. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): In order to assess the usage of information services and offers, information infrastructure institutes in the Leibniz Association have implemented web analyses. Based on online questionnaires and part-standardized interviews, seven Leibniz infrastructure institutes were assessed regarding their implementation of web analysis. The applied methods are described as well as instruments and metrics, together with available resources and the future perspective of web analysis at the Leibniz institutes. Altogether, the relevance of web analysis is rated high at the Leibniz institutes. However, a possible comparison of usage data is impeded owing to lacks of standardization, and the missing harmonization of metrics and assessment methods. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Due to the diversity of natural language processing (NLP) tools and resources, combining them into processing pipelines is an important issue, and sharing these pipelines with others remains a problem. We present DKPro Core, a broad-coverage component collection integrating a wide range of third-party NLP tools and making them interoperable. Contrary to other recent endeavors that rely heavily on web services, our collection consists only of portable components distributed via a repository, making it particularly interesting with respect to sharing pipelines with other researchers, embedding NLP pipelines in applications, and the use on high-performance computing clusters. Our collection is augmented by a novel concept for automatically selecting and acquiring resources required by the components at runtime from a repository. Based on these contributions, we demonstrate a way to describe a pipeline such that all required software and resources can be automatically obtained, making it easy to share it with others, e.g. in order to reproduce results or as examples in teaching, documentation, or publications.
