Abstract (english):
The shadow testing approach (STA; van der Linden & Reese, 1998) is considered the state of the art in constrained item selection for computerized adaptive tests. The present paper shows that certain types of constraints (e.g., bounds on categorical item attributes) induce a matroid on the item bank. This observation is used to devise item selection algorithms that are based on matroid optimization and lead to optimal tests, as the STA does. In particular, a single matroid constraint can be treated optimally by an efficient greedy algorithm that selects the most informative item preserving the integrity of the constraints. A simulation study shows that for applicable constraints, the optimal algorithms realize a decrease in standard error (SE) corresponding to a reduction in test length of up to 10% compared to the maximum priority index (Cheng & Chang, 2009) and up to 30% compared to Kingsbury and Zara's (1991) constrained computerized adaptive testing.

Abstract:
(Orig.)

Abstract:
This study conducted a simulation study for computer-adaptive testing based on the Aachen Depression Item Bank (ADIB), which was developed for the assessment of depression in persons with somatic diseases. Prior to computer-adaptive test simulation, the ADIB was newly calibrated.Recalibration was performed in a sample of 161 patients treated for a depressive syndrome, 103 patients from cardiology, and 103 patients from otorhinolaryngology (mean age 44.1, SD = 14.0; 44.7% female) and was cross-validated in a sample of 117 patients undergoing rehabilitation for cardiac diseases (mean age 58.4, SD = 10.5; 24.8% women). Unidimensionality of the itembank was checked and a Rasch analysis was performed that evaluated local dependency (LD), differential item functioning (DIF), item fit and reliability. CAT-simulation was conducted with the total sample and additional simulated data.Recalibration resulted in a strictly unidimensional item bank with 36 items, showing good Rasch model fit (item fit residuals < |2.5|) and no DIF or LD. CAT simulation revealed that 13 items on average were necessary to estimate depression in the range of − 2 and + 2 logits when terminating at SE ≤ 0.32 and 4 items if using SE ≤ 0.50. Receiver Operating Characteristics analysis showed that θ estimates based on the CAT algorithm have good criterion validity with regard to depression diagnoses (Area Under the Curve ≥ .78 for all cut-off criteria). The recalibration of the ADIB succeeded and the simulation studies conducted suggest that it has good screening performance in the samples investigated and that it may reasonably add to the improvement of depression assessment.

Abstract (english):
Complex Problem Solving (CPS) skills are essential to successfully deal with environments that change dynamically and involve a large number of interconnected and partially unknown causal influences. The increasing importance of such skills in the 21st century requires appropriate assessment and intervention methods, which in turn rely on adequate item construction, delivery, and scoring. The lack of assessment tools, however, has slowed down research on and understanding of CPS. This paper first presents the MicroDYN framework for assessing CPS, which is based on linear structural equation systems with input and output variables and opaque relations among them. Second, a versatile assessment platform, the CBA Item Builder, which allows the authoring, delivery, and scoring of CPS tasks for scientific and educational purposes is introduced. Third, we demonstrate the potential of such a tool for research by reporting an experimental study illustrating the effect of domain specific content knowledge on performance in CPS tasks both on an overall performance and on a process level. The importance of accessible and versatile technical platforms not only for assessment and research but also for intervention and learning are discussed with a particular focus on educational contexts.
