Abstract (english):
In a current research project we implemented an approach for delivering computer assisted adaptive testing as an additional form of formative assessment for a lecture. We primarily used these tests as a formative assessment during a "fundamentals of computer programming" course. The tests also included an individual feedback to further guide the students. To evaluate and improve the formative assessments, we performed a usability study, which was focused on the user satisfaction while taking a test and reading the feedback. The study used the user experience questionnaire. The results indicate that an adaptive assessment can provide more support, but also shows shortcomings of the current implementation. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The growing amount of open educational resources and the diversity on learning and teaching makes social tagging attractive for the educational field. Social tagging services become valuable in contexts where users can support the enrichment, sharing and management of relevant resources. Potential benefits are the enrichment of imcomplete metadata, which is crucial to offer effective retrieval services. However, user tagging skills need to be fostered if users shall effectively contribute to the idea of collaboratively sharing and creating educational resources. Our results show that users apply specific tags for their learning and teaching resources that we tried to assign to additional tag categories. Based on our results, we suggest improving such services with a more user-centric approach that supports the development of user competencies on social tagging. We will contribute to a better understanding of user tagging behaviour in services focusing on educational resources. On the one hand, this will help us to improve current services. On the other hand, we are able to build services that foster tagging literacy. This will be beneficial for users, which will be able to better manage their digital resources, and for infrastructure providers, which can apply user-generated data to improve their services. Abstract (english):
We present data-driven log file analyses of an electronic text book for history, called the mBook, to support teachers in preparing lessons for their students. We represent user sessions as contextualised Markov processes of user sessions and propose a probabilistic clustering using expectation maximisation to detect groups of similar (i) sessions and (ii) users. Abstract:
Web analytics is a common approach to monitoring and analyzing user behavior on websites. We investigated three different research aspects which can be addressed using web analytics data. Our main concern was the data quality, followed by general findings on user behavior as well as potential usability issues. We chose an iterative, qualitative approach in order to address all three aspects. Further, we annotated usage data in detail to achieve a deeper understanding of possible user intentions. As a result, we conclude that the use of web analytics data, captured with a modern and widely used tool, bears some limitations for usability analysis, as semantic problems occur that are often overlooked. Further pre-processing is needed to reconstruct the real clickstream when an analysis of the navigation and user behavior is planned. Some hints at usability issues could be found by detecting movement patterns between certain page types. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This paper explores participative Social Information Behavior in the educational domain. The goal is to capture a picture of current information practices in the Social Web. The focus is on the "places" and the scale of the Social Web in the domain, the communication dynamics and structure of communities and the specificities, quality, pragmatics and success of communication processes. The paper describes the concept and current implementation status of an online analysis approach and system that tries to answer these questions. Furthermore, first empirical results are presented. Data indicates that participative Social Information Behavior is of relevance in the domain: The volume of openly accessible user-generated content is impressive. The basic characteristics of analyzed forums suggest that such websites resemble sustainable knowledge building communities. Pre-tests regarding the analysis of communication processes denote that generated content can often be seen as a valuable information resource.

Abstract:
Recommender systems aim to capture interests of users to provide tailored recommendations. User interests are however often unique and depend on many unobservable factors including a user's mood and the local weather. We take a contextual session-based approach and propose a sequential framework using factored Markov decision processes (fMDPs) to detect the user's goal (the topic) of a session. We show that an independence assumption on the attributes of items leads to a set of independent models that can be optimised efficiently. Our approach results in interpretable topics that can be effectively turned into recommendations. Empirical results on a real world click log from a large e-commerce company exhibit highly accurate topic prediction rates of about 90%. Translating our approach into a topic-driven recommender system outperforms several baseline competitors. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This research applies the socio-cognitive perspective on browsing [...] to the design and evaluation of a research data ontology in the domain of video studies in educational research. Furthermore, the work extends the methodological toolbox for qualitative and user-centered evaluation of ontology content. [...] The ontology represents information relevant for data sharing activities in the domain, e.g. research data, research context or methods. The purpose of this paper is a) to outline the theoretical framework of the research, b) to make a theoretical-analytical contribution to the concept of browsing and c) to give a brief overview of the research design which represents work in progress.

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
An analysis of the usage data of the German Education Server is given. The analysis is based on usage data gathered using a web analytics software. Popular web analytics metrics such as visit depth, duration and bounces are being segmented by the type of website entry. From this analysis, a demand for a personalization feature is deduced. Furthermore, various personalization functions are introduced and the results of an online survey on the relevance of possible functions are given. Finally, recommendations based on the survey results are given for an implementation of a personalization feature.

Abstract:
We study discriminative clustering for market segmentation tasks. The underlying problem setting resembles discriminative clustering, however, existing approaches focus on the prediction of univariate cluster labels. By contrast, market segments encode complex (future) behavior of the individuals which cannot be represented by a single variable. In this paper, we generalize discriminative clustering to structured and complex output variables that can be represented as graphical models. We devise two novel methods to jointly learn the classifier and the clustering using alternating optimization and collapsed inference, respectively. The two approaches jointly learn a discriminative segmentation of the input space and a generative output prediction model for each segment. We evaluate our methods on segmenting user navigation sequences from Yahoo! News. The proposed collapsed algorithm is observed to outperform baseline approaches such as mixture of experts. We showcase exemplary projections of the resulting segments to display the interpretability of the solutions.
