Abstract (english):
According to the Overlapping Waves Model, children's strategy use in performing academic skills is variable and adaptive and changes gradually with age and experience. In the context of children's numerical and arithmetical development, several findings confirm the assumptions of the model. In this study, elementary school children in 2nd (n = 30) and 4th (n = 28) grade, with comparable IQ and reading achievement scores were confronted with different single word tasks (common and uncommon words, word-similar and -dissimilar pseudowords) to trigger different reading strategies. Strategy behavior was identified by video analysis and children's self-report. The analyses of the data confirm the validity of the Overlapping Waves Model in the context of single word reading. Children in both grades showed variable and multiple usage of strategies and reacted adaptively when reading words of the different categories. Moreover, older children used more elaborated strategies and were more efficient in their strategy choice.

Abstract (english):
This article examines working memory functioning in children with specific developmental disorders of scholastic skills as defined by ICD- 10. Ninety-seven second to fourth graders with a minimum IQ of 80 are compared using a 2 x 2 factorial (dyscalculia vs. no dyscalculia; dyslexia vs. no dyslexia) design. An extensive test battery assesses the three subcomponents of working memory described by Baddeley (1986): phonological loop, visual-spatial sketchpad, and central executive. Children with dyscalculia show deficits in visual-spatial memory; children with dyslexia show deficits in phonological and central executive functioning. When controlling for the influence of the phonological loop on the performance of the central executive, however, the effect is no longer significant. Although children with both reading and arithmetic disorders are consistently outperformed by all other groups, there is no significant interaction between the factors dyscalculia and dyslexia. Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)
Abstract (english):
Variability in strategy use within single trials in free recall was analyzed longitudinally from second to fourth grades (ages 8 - 10 years). To control for practice effects another sample of fourth graders was included (age 10 years). Video analyses revealed that children employed different strategies when preparing for free recall. A gradual shift from labeling to cumulative rehearsal was present both with increasing age and across different list positions. Whereas cumulative rehearsal was frequent at early list positions, labeling was dominant at later list portions. Working memory capacity predicted the extent of cumulative rehearsal usage, which became more efficient with increasing age. Results are discussed in the context of the adaptive strategy choice model.(DIPF/Autor)
