Abstract:
Various international student assessment studies during the last decades have demonstrated that the probability of academic failure is dramatically heightened among children with low socio-economic family background and those with a migration background. Additionally, children without risk background factors can equally suffer from the aforementioned learning problems: e.g. will develop learning disabilities and attention problems and have a high probability for academic failure. This seems to indicate that learning disabilities and behavioral problems are not simply a consequence of social risk factors, but are just as likely to develop as a result of risk conditions inherent in the individual. Taking this as a starting point, a group of scientists from the German Institute for International Educational Research, the Goethe University and the Sigmund-Freud-Institut developed the framework for IDeA - a center for Research on Individual Development and Adaptive Education of Children at Risk. The innovative idea was to combine longitudinal developmental research with experimental studies on educational interventions, and to focus on children with an increased probability for academic failure. In July 2008, the LOEWE Center IDeA was established with some longitudinal studies investigating the social and cognitive factors influencing children's developmental pathways. Today, the center incorporates more than a hundred scientists from various disciplines such as psychology, psycholinguistics, psychoanalysis, neuroscience, linguistics, several didactics, sociology, and educational science. IDeA thus has become a multi-disciplinary joint venture conducting both comprehensive longitudinal studies and cross-sectional focused empirical studies.

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
This paper provides an introduction to the special issue on learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders in children. Initially, the authors sketch the current state of research on these types of disorders, especially with regard to assessment and prevailing comorbidities. the paper also includes an overview of the studies described in this issue. Most of them were conducted at the IDeA Center in Frankfurt, Germany. Taken together, these studies point to a more differentiated view on the neurobiological foundations of learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders. This will probably lead to improvements with respect to assessment, prevention, and intervention for these kind of disorders.

Abstract:
Understanding students' historical understanding is a complex and challengingendeavour, for history teachers as well as for researchers from diverse fields. Sincehistorical situations contain interpersonal and social issues that happened in thepast, not only history educators are interested in how students understand them. Also, psychologists and educational scientists aim to gain knowledge how studentsdeal with interpersonal issues in the context of history. The present book shows inwhich way historical understanding can be viewed as interpersonal understandingand gives indications for the limitation of an interpersonal approach regarding historical situations. The different contributions of this volume give insight into aninterdisciplinary discussion about how the fields of social and historical thinking areinterrelated with respect to educational issues and challenges. This book confirmsthe impression of an increase in empirical work in the domain of history education. The authors present empirical approaches from the fields of history education, developmental psychology and educational science using different theoretical andmethodical means and thus contribute to a larger picture of what teaching andlearning history at school is about.(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
This study addresses a competency of students' historical thinking related to taking perspectives. We start by discussing socio-cognitive theories from psychology as well as approaches from history education that focus on this competency. We also present empirical findings concerning relationships between achievement, self-concept and interest in the subject of history and connect these findings with the competency to take historical perspectives. Our research questions target this relationship between indicators of achievement and motivation in the subject of history, the competency of historical perspective taking and students' socio-cognitive ability to adopt social perspectivesin their everyday lives. These questions are investigated using a cross-sectional design with 375 grammar school students in grades 7 and 10. Results indicate that in grade 7 the competency to take historical perspectives relates to students' ability to coordinate social perspectives in their everyday lives. For 10th graders, however, the adoption of historical perspectives is closely related to subject-specific variables such as interest for history, self-concept, history grade and achievement in a test of historical knowledge. In the last section of this paper, we discuss challenges that arise when students' competencies in a subject like history are assessed within the context of standard-based testing. Specifically, we raise the issues of reliability, validity, the context-specificity of measurements, the kinds of response formats used and the formulation of progression models of historical thinking. Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Researchers widely agree that learning history should involve more than learning historical facts and should include competencies of historical thinking. Various models of historical thinking view students' competency to take historical perspectives as a standard in history education. In this study we introduce a standardized measure for historical perspective taking (HPT) consisting of a short scenario set in the German Weimar Republic. We assessed students' HPT by using rating scales; our data were obtained in grammar schools from 170 German 10th graders. Latent class analyses identified three types of students with similar profiles of HPT. One was present-oriented and two showedmore or less contextualized historical thinking. Students' history grades were connected to their HPT competency. We discuss limitations of the study and argue for further research on measures assessing students' historical thinking. (DIPF/Orig.)
