Abstract (english): This paper focuses on a crowdfunding initiative for Open Access E-Books in educational research. It involves research communities and academic libraries for establishing a community of subscribers to share the publication fees of open e-books. The background is the ongoing transformation of the scholarly publication landscape towards Open Access (Suber 2012), which fundamentally changes funding in publishing. There is a demand for free access and circulation of scientific knowledge supported by most national research funding agencies and the European Commission (see Sherpa Juliet 2022), while publishers adjust their business models, academic libraries and research communities promote the idea and follow new conditions. Studies have argued for a seamless financial shift without the need of extra resources (Schimmer et al. 2015). But several deficits become visible when looking at the full range of publication types and cultures. Sustainable financial models are lacking and a fundamental shift in financing is realised: while the physical book is paid through its usage, the digital open access book is funded through publication fees. Given this new condition, the author - instead of the reader - pays for the publication. The pay wall and its barrier for participation changes from reading to publishing through paying the so called article or book processing charges (APC, BPC). This change impacts more intensively the Social Sciences and Humanities because of the less established publication fees in these research communities. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): Images have been used as didactic material since early modern times; images that served to explain the world with their help have of course been around for longer. The image has been ascribed an illustrative function, often with the hope of giving learners both wider and easier access to the subject matter. The question arises in which - historically different - ways the visual medium presented and thus also constructed an object of learning, how at different times the image and the word were connected, complemented or also contradicted each other, and in which ways images were made accessible to learners, what happened to the images and how they were dealt with. Abstract: Intro: When confronted with major threats, people often experience decline in well‐being. The central purpose of this study was to identify mechanisms underlying change of well‐being in times of threat, using the example of the COVID‐19 pandemic, with a focus on appraisals of the pandemic and affective states, stress, as well as mindfulness in daily life.
Methods: We conducted a study across 3.5 weeks, including pretest, posttest, and a diary phase in‐between. We worked with a sample of 460 adults, pre‐ and post‐test information, as well as 7189 observations from the diary phase.
Results: Results showed that deterioration in mental health symptoms across the duration of the study was associated with (a) change towards less fortunate appraisals of the pandemic and (b), more negative affect and less mindfulness in daily life. Furthermore, appraisals of the pandemic at pretest predicted experiences in daily life, with more negative appraisals of the pandemic predicting more negative affect and stressor occurrence as well as less mindfulness.
Discussion: These findings speak to the dynamic nature of well‐being and appraisals in times of threat, and highlight the role of experiences in daily life in changes in well‐being. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): We examined the contribution of rapid automatized naming (RAN) components (articulation time, pause time, and pause time consistency) to reading fluency, reading comprehension, and spelling in a sample of 257 German children (139 boys, 118 girls; Mage = 5.60 years, SD = 0.31) followed from kindergarten to Grade 1. In kindergarten, children were assessed on measures of RAN (colors and objects), phonological awareness, letter-sound knowledge, phonological short-term memory, and paired-associate learning. Reading fluency, reading comprehension, and spelling were assessed at the end of Grade 1. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that pause time and pause time consistency continued to predict reading fluency, but not reading comprehension or spelling, after controlling for the effects of the other cognitive skills assessed in kindergarten. Articulation time did not add to the prediction of any literacy skills. These findings support previous research suggesting that, during the early phases of learning to read, pause time holds the key in the relation between RAN and reading fluency. (DIPF/Orig,)

Abstract (english): Many researchers have a positive attitude towards open science and are motivated to apply them. However, applying them requires a change in one's daily practices. Different factors might challenge a behavioral change. The introduced study wants to get deeper insights into the reasons and influences that lead early career researchers to apply open practices in their daily research and teaching work. The participatory design let ten participants choose open practices they wanted to learn and adapt in either research or teaching scenarios. The study accompanied them and collected their positive and challenging experiences via diverse methods like interviews, diary entries and workshops. This paper introduces the study design and preliminary results. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): The chapter introduces the readers to the contents and rationales of this handbook. This Handbook focuses on the education systems on the American continents - North, Central, and South America - and includes chapters for most countries in this region, also the Caribbean. This introductory chapter first offers a conceptual discussion of central concepts that build the object of interest of the chapters, namely national education systems, and discusses their status and relevance for understanding education in the global era. By doing so, it sets the intellectual framework for the country chapters. By deliberating on the conceptual leverage of each term, it aims at both sharpening their analytical traction and pointing to their multifaceted nature - a crucial intellectual activity before any comparative exercise. It closes with a brief outline of the common structure that builds the backbone of the individual country chapters is then presented. This section briefly expounds the rationale of the different parts of the chapters, offering some justification for the organizational principles deployed, including their selective nature. In making these decisions transparent, the section also functions as a useful reading aid. (DIPF/Orig.)
