Abstract (english):
This article focuses on a library collection containing around 9,000 titles of Pädagogische Lesungen [Pedagogical Lectures] (PL), compiled and centrally awarded in the GDR from 1961 to 1989. This contribution gives an initial overview of the current state of research and a comprehensive description of the material diversity of the collection. Besides the historical specificity and heterogeneous composition of the unique material, the article also examines the function and use of the lectures within the centrally organised system of teacher training in the GDR. From an educational and contemporary educational perspective, the scientific utilisation of this multilayered source material is highly lucrative, since it can provide information on the (re)production, mediation and transformation of subject-specific content and school-specific knowledge. Professional debates reflected in those lectures provide valuable inspiration for research into the history and practice of subject teaching in the GDR, as well as for the professionalisation of teachers. In addition to questions concerning the relationship between theory and practice or terminology, the collection can also be used to trace the availability and emergence of new media and materials, which were reflected in the methodological-didactic design of subject teaching and also in the preparation of the PL themselves. Thus, the expansive material offers diverse approaches to research for a wide range of disciplines such as linguistics and cultural sciences, historical and political sciences, and information and media sciences as well as subject didactics.

Abstract:

Abstract (english):
Teaching practices are pivotal for student learning. Due to pedagogical traditions and national cultures, the structure of teaching practices may differ across countries. This study investigates the structure of teaching practices across 12 countries grouped into four major linguistic/cultural clusters. First, factor analysis is applied to investigate if the theoretical distinction between teacher-directed and student-centred practices is generalizable across countries. Then, network analysis is used to explore how individual classroom assessment practices relate to either teacher-directed or student-centred practices. Main findings include that: (1) teacher-directed and student-centred practices are two distinct factors across countries; (2) the overall structure and connectivity of teaching practices differs across countries, with smaller differences within linguistic/cultural clusters; and (3) assessment practices with the aim to structure and guide learning strongly relate to teacher-directed practices, whereas assessment practices with the aim to individualize instruction more relate to student-centred practices. We discuss the global patterning and implications.

Abstract:
What does teaching look like? What practices are most impactful? By directly observing teaching in the classroom, this study trialled new research methods to shed light on these key questions for raising student outcomes around the world. This report provides a detailed account of classroom management, social and emotional support, and instructional practices in the classrooms of eight countries and economies, drawing upon the observation of lesson videos and instructional materials, the analysis of teacher and student questionnaires, and the measurement of students' cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes. Abstract:
The Study has unique aspects that differentiate it from other international studies of teaching. This chapter describes the aspects of teaching that were measured in the Study, how the samples of teachers and classrooms were obtained in each country or economy, and how the Study was fielded. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the limitations of the Study that should be taken into account when considering the Study's results and implications.
