Abstract (english):
Purpose : The transition to school and the first years of elementary school education are very sensitive phases for reading development. Reading researchers have established key precursors and developmental steps in these phases. However, how these components interact and affect growth is not well understood yet. The current study from Germany replicates established findings and explores how curvilinear effects can add information to our understanding of reading development. Method : 525 German-speaking children were followed during a 5-year period from kindergarten to fourth Grade. Phonological awareness (PA), letter knowledge (LK), rapid naming (RAN) and language skills (LS) were assessed in kindergarten, decoding and reading comprehension in elementary school. Analysis was based on latent growth models with curvilinear (quadratic) effects. Results : The results indicate that PA and LK are of importance for early reading, RAN was additionally revealed to be of importance for further growth in decoding. Language skills and decoding, together with their interaction, explain variation in reading comprehension skills. A curvilinear effect was found for decoding on reading comprehension growth only. Conclusion : Our study shows which precursors predict growth in reading development in a transparent orthography and expands our understanding of how language and decoding affect the development of reading comprehension. Abstract:
This study collected monthly data between September 2020 and August 2021 to document the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for German preschool teachers during different pandemic phases. This longitudinal study investigated how subjective stress experiences and self-efficacy beliefs of preschool teachers (N = 279) change over time and explored associations on the inter- and intraindividual level. We observed phase-specific changes in subjective stress experiences and interindividual differences in change rates, but no systematic increase across the entire study period. Results also highlight self-efficacy beliefs as a resource for preschool teachers, which should be strengthened to better face stress experiences. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Teacher research shows relevant relationships between self-efficacy beliefs and interaction quality, whereas the interaction-related self-efficacy beliefs of preschool teachers have remained unexplored. We constructed a questionnaire measuring interaction-related self-efficacy beliefs in three domains of interaction quality (Emotional Support, Classroom Organisation, and Instructional Support) and assessed them in a sample of N = 120 (prospective) preschool teachers. We compared three-factor and bifactor confirmatory factor analyses (3-CFA, B-CFA) using exploratory structural equation models (3-ESEM, B-ESEM). Our results show a sufficient differentiation of the three domains and good model fits of the confirmatory three-factor model (3-CFA) and bifactor model (B-CFA). A first validation revealed a significant correlation between self-efficacy beliefs and vocational experience but not qualification (3-CFA). There was also a relationship with the general factor but not with the specific factors (B-CFA). We discuss the consequences for further implementations and the meaning of the results for the daily interaction quality of preschool teachers. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The association between academic self-concept and achievement is assumed to be reciprocal. Although a large amount of research has been interpreted as demonstrating a bidirectional association, these results are typically based on variants of the classical cross-lagged panel model and often include only one achievement indicator in the models. Results with more recently developed methodological approaches, for example, the random-intercept cross-lagged panel model, are hardly found so far. The present study aimed to test the association between math self-concept and math achievement with different models to evaluate whether positive cross effects can be demonstrated with the alternative models. Drawing on a sample of 1952 elementary students from Grade 1 to Grade 3, results of structural equation modeling yielded noticeable differences. While effects of achievement on self-concept can be demonstrated in all models, the evidence for the reverse effects is rather weak. The results are discussed with regard to the theoretical assumptions and appropriate methodological approaches. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The influence of early childhood teachers' beliefs on different aspects of their professional competencies has become a topic of growing importance in early childhood education and care. The presented study investigated pedagogical content beliefs of 120 early childhood teachers in German kindergartens. The relations between their beliefs and the assessed quality of interaction with children, the competency of professional vision, theoretical knowledge, and educational background were examined. The study focused on the domain of Instructional Support because of its relevance for children's cognitive development. Five distinct profiles of teachers' beliefs were identified from a person-centered approach of latent profile analysis. The analyses of profile-differences showed that profiles of teachers with similar beliefs significantly differed in their theoretical knowledge and educational background. This paper concludes by outlining analogies of the resulting profiles with the concurrent evidence in the field of ECEC, discussing study-specific limitations and suggesting potential implementation for teachers' educations as well as starting points for further research investigations. Abstract (english):
We examined the contribution of rapid automatized naming (RAN) components (articulation time, pause time, and pause time consistency) to reading fluency, reading comprehension, and spelling in a sample of 257 German children (139 boys, 118 girls; Mage = 5.60 years, SD = 0.31) followed from kindergarten to Grade 1. In kindergarten, children were assessed on measures of RAN (colors and objects), phonological awareness, letter-sound knowledge, phonological short-term memory, and paired-associate learning. Reading fluency, reading comprehension, and spelling were assessed at the end of Grade 1. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that pause time and pause time consistency continued to predict reading fluency, but not reading comprehension or spelling, after controlling for the effects of the other cognitive skills assessed in kindergarten. Articulation time did not add to the prediction of any literacy skills. These findings support previous research suggesting that, during the early phases of learning to read, pause time holds the key in the relation between RAN and reading fluency. (DIPF/Orig,)

Abstract (english):
Early intervention for children with reading impairments is crucial in order to achieve reading improvements and avoid school failure. One line of reading intervention research focuses on the experimental manipulation of reading rate through a text-fading training approach. Considering relevant reading-related predictors (i.e., orthographic knowledge and rapid automatized naming; RAN), we aim at evaluating the text-fading training's efficiency for a sample of German reading-impaired third graders (n = 120). The purpose of the present study was to examine (1) the predictive value of orthographic knowledge and RAN and their contribution of explained variance in comprehension performance during training, (2) text-fading training effects on reading rate and comprehension in a pre-post comparison, and (3) (lasting) text-fading training effects at word and sentence level in a pre-post-follow-up design. Results of structural models indicated RAN to be significantly related to comprehension performance for the experimental group, whereas no sufficient regression weight was found for orthographic knowledge. A reverse pattern was found for the self-paced group. No significant improvements regarding reading rate and comprehension were revealed for the experimental group after training. However, significant positive effects on word and sentence level at post-test time point indicate stronger reading improvements for the experimental compared to the control group. The retention of training gains was indicated at sentence-level reading 6 months after the training. Possible explanations for the presented positive training effects as well as the mixed results for reading rate, comprehension, and follow-up preservation are discussed.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Diagnostics and instructional support are key components of professional early education, and are associated with specific competencies. To contribute to this field of research, we conducted a survey study with 285 early childhood educators. Educators' knowledge of diagnostics and instructional support regarding children's language and mathematic development was assessed by a case vignette. Latent class analysis identified five groups of educators differing with regard to their knowledge. Their written answers were characterized by either pointing out cooperation with others (C1), a lack of one's own ideas (C2), emphasizing both observation and support methods (C3), a focus on support methods (C4), or focusing on methods of observation and cooperation (C5). Moreover, these groups differed in other facets of professional competencies and structural features. Significant differences were revealed regarding their beliefs toward assessment of skills and their individual stress level. Implications for professional development and further research are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)
