Abstract (english):
Assessing and measuring students' social background characteristics and relating their background data to achievement is pervasive in international large-scale assessments (ILSAs). Our review focuses on two strains of research: the use of socio-economic status (SES) on the one hand, and the use of cultural and social capital on the other. With regard to SES, we provide a brief overview of theoretical concepts, contrasting unidimensional and multidimensional views. We discuss the variety of measures of SES that researchers use in their studies, highlighting the lack of consensus on their conceptual meaning and measurement. We then outline how key indicators of SES (e.g., parental occupation, parental education, parental income) are assessed in ILSAs. This is followed by a section on the quality of students' reports of parent's SES characteristics. With regard to cultural and social capital we discuss the mechanisms that underlie the relationship between social background and students' achievement. In addition, we give a brief overview of research applying the theory of cultural and social capital in the context of ILSAs. Finally, practical implications for the assessment of social background characteristics in ILSA are discussed, and recommendations are offered. Some of these background characteristics were tested in the PISA 2015 field trial. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
In Germany, the number of schools offering extracurricular activities and extended daily hours (referred to as "all-day schools") is increasing. Between 2003 and 2009, converting and equipping schools to the all-day format has been financially supported by the investment program "Zukunft Bildung und Betreuung" (IZBB) - [Future of Education and Care]. The "Study on the Development of All-day Schools" (Studie zur Entwicklung von Ganztagsschulen, StEG) was designed to evaluate the effects of the all-day school program. In this paper, StEG is described and an overview of its important results is provided. The political and societal motives leading to the introduction of all-day schools in Germany are considered, as well as scientific evidence regarding the effects of all-day schools . It is assumed that the introduction of all-day schools promotes development in at least three areas: family-life, school effectiveness and student learning. In this paper, data to support these assumptions is presented.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
This study drew on Bourdieu's theoretical observations to consider how much the acquisitionof cultural assets influences individuals' choice of recreational activities, culturalactivities in particular. The accumulated ALLBUS data records from 1998 and 2004 were analyzed to determine how much cultural assets (in this case, the individual'slevel of education and the educational background of the father) influence selectionof cultural recreational activities, and how influential these assets are relative to othersocio-demographic factors. Further analysis sought answers to these questions: is socialbackground more likely than level of education to influence individuals' selectionof cultural recreational activities, and do academic professions correlate with differentpreferences regarding recreational activities, as Bourdieu suggests? The study alsoconsiders if individuals take part in highly prestigious cultural activities to strengthentheir own social position, as reflected in their occupational status. (DIPF/Orig.)
