Abstract (english):
International large-scale assessments such as PISA or PIAAC have started to provide public or scientific use files for log data; that is, events, event-related attributes and timestamps of test-takers' interactions with the assessment system. Log data and the process indicators derived from it can be used for many purposes. However, the intended uses and interpretations of process indicators require validation, which here means a theoretical and/or empirical justification that inferences about (latent) attributes of the test-taker's work process are valid. This article reviews and synthesizes measurement concepts from various areas, including the standard assessment paradigm, the continuous assessment approach, the evidence-centered design (ECD) framework, and test validation. Based on this synthesis, we address the questions of how to ensure the valid interpretation of process indicators by means of an evidence-centered design of the task situation, and how to empirically challenge the intended interpretation of process indicators by developing and implementing correlational and/or experimental validation strategies. For this purpose, we explicate the process of reasoning from log data to low-level features and process indicators as the outcome of evidence identification. In this process, contextualizing information from log data is essential in order to reduce interpretative ambiguities regarding the derived process indicators. Finally, we show that empirical validation strategies can be adapted from classical approaches investigating the nomothetic span and construct representation. Two worked examples illustrate possible validation strategies for the design phase of measurements and their empirical evaluation. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Social presence is a central concept relating to interpersonal aspects in online distance learning. However, the conditions and determinants of its emergence are not yet fully understood. As a construct rooted in social psychology, the potential of individual differences predicting perceptions of social presence has been largely neglected, thus, constituting a gap in our understanding. In a sample of 201 online distance education students, the merits of a trait-level view of social presence were investigated. To this end, personality was assessed using the Big Five personality inventory, exploring both a dimensional and a typological approach. Results suggest that specific personality typologies may be more prone to perceptions of social presence, thus calling for an extension of our theoretical modeling of the construct. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
A new response time-based method for coding omitted item responses in computer-based testing is introduced and illustrated with empirical data. The new method is derived from the theory of missing data problems of Rubin and colleagues and embedded in an item response theory framework. Its basic idea is using item response times to statistically test for each individual item whether omitted responses are missing completely at random (MCAR) or missing due to a lack of ability and, thus, not at random (MNAR) with fixed type-1 and type-2 error levels. If the MCAR hypothesis is maintained, omitted responses are coded as not administered (NA), and as incorrect (0) otherwise. The empirical illustration draws from the responses given by N = 766 students to 70 items of a computer-based ICT skills test. The new method is compared with the two common deterministic methods of scoring omitted responses as 0 or as NA. In result, response time thresholds from 18 to 58 s were identified. With 61%, more omitted responses were recoded into 0 than into NA (39%). The differences in difficulty were larger when the new method was compared to deterministically scoring omitted responses as NA compared to scoring omitted responses as 0. The variances and reliabilities obtained under the three methods showed small differences. The paper concludes with a discussion of the practical relevance of the observed effect sizes, and with recommendations for the practical use of the new method as a method to be applied in the early stage of data processing. Abstract (english):
Using data from 1,571 ninth-grade students (Mage = 14.62) from 82 academic track schools in Germany and their predominantly Caucasian middle-class parents, configurations of different family characteristics reported by parents were investigated. Latent profile analyses considering academic involvement, family interest, parents' self-concept, child's need for support, and parents' time and energy identified average, indifferent, motivated and engaged, motivated and disengaged, and involved families. Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations with students' motivational (self-concept, effort, and interest) and achievement outcomes (achievement test and grades) in math were analyzed. Students from families classified as motivated and disengaged showed higher initial levels motivation and achievement. Over 5 months, these students also showed an increase in self-concept and higher achievement than students from other family types. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Log data from educational assessments attract more and more attention and large-scale assessment programs have started providing log data as scientific use files. Such data generated as a by-product of computer-assisted data collection has been known as paradata in survey research. In this paper, we integrate log data from educational assessments into a taxonomy of paradata. To provide a generic framework for the analysis of log data, finite state machines are suggested. Beyond its computational value, the specific benefit of using finite state machines is achieved by separating platform-specific log events from the definition of indicators by states. Specifically, states represent filtered log data given a theoretical process model, and therefore, encode the information of log files selectively. The approach is empirically illustrated using log data of the context questionnaires of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). We extracted item-level response time components from questionnaire items that were administered as item batteries with multiple questions on one screen and related them to the item responses. Finally, the taxonomy and the finite state machine approach are discussed with respect to the definition of complete log data, the verification of log data and the reproducibility of log data analyses. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Extensive diagnostics are essential for the detection of learning disorders. In order to be able to detect deviations in school achievement, standardized test procedures are necessary, which can be used to compare individual performance with an age-related standard group. Test procedures in the field of learning disorder diagnostics are therefore strongly oriented to the curricular contents of the respective school class levels. On the other hand, diagnosis relevant for specific intervention is aimed at assessing specific basic competences and enables the creation of individual performance profiles. This enables strengths and weaknesses to be identified and the basis for individual support to be created. In the field of technology-related diagnostics, the current challenge is to develop appropriate solutions for the collection of information relevant for intervention. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This longitudinal study investigated patterns of developmental problems across depression, aggression, and academic achievement during adolescence, using two measurement points two years apart (N=1,665; age T1: M = 13.14; female = 49.6 percent). Latent Profile Analyses and Latent Transition Analyses yielded four main findings: A three-type solution provided the best fit to the data: an asymptomatic type (i.e., low problem scores in all three domains), a depressed type (i.e., high scores in depression), an aggressive type (i.e., high scores in aggression). Profile types were invariant over the two data waves but differed between girls and boys, revealing gender-specific patterns of comorbidity. Stabilities over time were high for the asymptomatic type and for types that represented problems in one domain, but moderate for comorbid types. Differences in demographic variables (i.e., age, socio-economic status) and individual characteristics (i.e., self-esteem, dysfunctional cognitions, cognitive capabilities) predicted profile type memberships and longitudinal transitions between types. Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Following the typological approach of research on parenting styles, the present study uses latent profile analysis to identify different profiles of parental homework involvement in families. Furthermore, the paper examines whether the profiles differ with respect to other aspects of family socialization as well as children's academic development. On the basis of survey data from 2,668 fifth and sixth graders and their parents, three profiles of parental homework involvement were revealed. The profiles differed along the dimensions of emotional support, the provision of structure, and interference/control. Families characterized by different homework involvement profiles also differed with respect to various aspects of family socialization. Moreover, students' academic development differed according to which family profile they belonged to. By applying a typological approach, the present study complements previous research on parental homework involvement, which has focused on analyzing separate dimensions of parental behavior.
