Abstract (english): In our research, involving 100 high school students from Germany between 10 and 17 years of age, children and adolescents were generally very open towards integrating Syrian refugees in their peer activities- with girls being even more inclusive than boys. We used hypothetical scenarios in which adolescents were asked if they would include refugee peers versus local peer in their leisure time peer group activities or not. In the first part of the study, we identified host country language skills as a key element for positive social integration of refugee youths in Germany. In part two of the study, we revealed an interesting asymmetry between youths' own decisions and what they think their group would do: whereas the youth themselves were very inclusive towards Syrian peers, they expected their group to prefer German peers and expected them to less likely choose a Syrian peer for their leisure time activities. Abstract: Strong classroom management allows teachers and students to be focused on learning and use time efficiently. This chapter describes the quality of observed classroom management practices as well as how classroom activities were structured and where in the lesson instructional time was lost. It also describes teachers' and students' perceptions of classroom management practices.

Abstract: This chapter documents what the Study defined to be a "quadratic equations unit" and the degree to which that unit was implemented in similar ways across countries/economies. Variations in intended length and content are highlighted and, using teaching materials and teacher and student reports, variations in approaches to teaching the focal unit are described. Together, they shed light on what and how different types of opportunities to learn manifested in classrooms.

Abstract: Student achievement has become a major criterion for evaluating the effectiveness of schooling and teaching. However, valid interpretation and use of test scores in educational contexts require more detailed information about the degree to which the applied test instruments are appropriate to evaluate the intended educational and interventional effects. Instructional sensitivity is the psychometric property of tests or single items to capture effects of classroom instruction. Although instructional sensitivity is a prerequisite for valid inferences on teaching effectiveness, sensitivity is rather assumed than verified in practice. The aim of this chapter is to improve the understanding of instructional sensitivity and its measurement in educational intervention research. Specifically, it first provides an overview of the theoretical framework and relevance of instructional sensitivity. Then, different approaches of measuring instructional sensitivity are outlined and procedures of implementing instructional sensitivity in educational intervention studies are introduced and contrasted with each other. Finally, the role of time spans is discussed and modelling change for short-time and long-time effects in pretest-posttest-follow-up designs is addressed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: What drives socioeconomic success within a society? This study analyzes how late childhood intelligence, parental socioeconomic background, and gender relate to multiple dimensions of adult socioeconomic success (i.e., education, occupational status, and income). A particular focus is placed on education, which is considered as both an indicator of socioeconomic success and a mediator of the relationships with the other dimensions. Randomly sampled participants (N = 5,292) in a German prospective longitudinal study were assessed for the first time at age 12 years in 1991 and for the last time as adults in 2009-10. Comparison of the effects of childhood intelligence and parental socioeconomic background revealed childhood intelligence to be the more powerful predictor of the 3 dimensions of later adult socioeconomic success. Education was the strongest predictor of both later adult occupational status and later adult income, and mediated most of the effects of childhood intelligence and parental socioeconomic background on later adult occupational status and later adult income. A gender income gap was apparent, with men reporting higher income, even when childhood factors and education were controlled. Education barely mediated any gender differences, but family-related structural factors (i.e., working part time and having children) explained much of the gender gap in income. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): A validity approach is proposed that uses processing times to collect validity evidence for the construct interpretation of test scores. The rationale of the approach is based on current research of processing times and on classical validity approaches, providing validity evidence based on relationships with other variables. Within the new approach, convergent validity evidence is obtained if a component skill, that is expected to underlie the task solution process in the target construct, positively moderates the relationship between effective speed and effective ability in the corresponding target construct. Discriminant validity evidence is provided if a component skill, that is not expected to underlie the task solution process in the target construct, does indeed not moderate the speed-ability relation in this target construct. Using data from a study that follows up the German PIAAC sample, this approach was applied to reading competence, assessed with PIAAC literacy items, and to quantitative reasoning, assessed with Number Series. As expected from theory, the effect of speed on ability in the target construct was only moderated by the respective underlying component skill, that is, word meaning activation skill as an underlying component skill of reading competence, and perceptual speed as an underlying component skill of reasoning. Accordingly, no positive interactions were found for the component skill that should not underlie the task solution process, that is, word meaning activation for reasoning and perceptual speed for reading. Furthermore, the study shows the suitability of the proposed validation approach. The use of time information in association with task results brings construct validation closer to the actual response process than widely used correlations of test scores. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): At many German all-day schools, homework practices are being replaced by time at school for individualised learning, so-called learning time. A variety of arguments support this change in learning culture at school. Benefits are that pupils have almost no tasks to do after school and, accordingly, parents are no longer responsible for their children's homework. However, the schools have to handle the challenges of restructuring the learning practices. This study focuses on the question, which aspects of the schools' organisation are affected by the implementation of individualised learning time. Based on qualitative, longitudinal data of a German comprehensive school, different processes of organisational change are described in a case study. As a result, three layers are identified, which show significant changes after the implementation of learning time: time structure, personnel and learning support.
