Abstract (english): Theoretical considerations (see Chaps. 5 to 19 of this volume) led to the development of a great amount of questionnaire material, which was localized to fit the contexts of more than 70 countries and economies, implemented in a study with about 120,000 students across these countries, and analyzed to yield indicators on how well questions functioned across and within countries. Such a study, and its results, depends on design and methodological considerations and on decisions made during preparation and implementation. This chapter summarizes decisions regarding the design and analysis procedures of the PISA 2015 field trial, and the resulting data that were used to develop the PISA 2015 main survey's context assessment. Furthermore, this chapter provides strategies and reasoning related to the choice of questionnaire material that was deemed to be suitable to assess learning contexts in different countries equally well.
Abstract: The attainment of fluency in reading is a major difficulty for reading-disabled people. Manipulations applied on the presentation of texts, leading to "on-line" effects on reading (i.e., while texts are manipulated), are one direction of examinations in search of methods affecting reading. The imposing of time constraints, by deleting one letter after the other from texts presented on a computer screen, has been established as such a method. In an attempt to further understand its nature, we tested the relations between time constraints and processes of reading: phonological decoding of small orthogrpahic units and the addressing of orthographic representations from the mental lexicon. We also examined whether the type of orthogrpahic unit deleted (lexical, sublexical, or nonlexical unit) has any additional effect. Participants were German fifth graders with (n = 29) or without (n = 34) reading disability. Time constraints enhanced fluency in reading in both groups, and to a similar extent, across conditions. Comprehension was unimpaired. These results place the very principle of time constraints, regardless of the orthographic unit manipulated, as a critical factor affecting fluency in reading. However, phonological decoding explained a significant amount of variance in fluency in reading across all conditions in reading-disabled children, whereas the addressing of orthographic representations was the consistent predictor of fluency in reading in regular readers. These results indicate a qualitative difference in the processes explaining the variance in fluency in reading in regular and reading-disabled readers and suggest that time constraints might not have an effect on the relations between these processes and reading performance. Abstract: The main challenge of ability tests relates to the difficulty of items, whereas speed tests demand that test takers complete very easy items quickly. This article proposes a conceptual framework to represent how performance depends on both between-person differences in speed and ability and the speed-ability compromise within persons. Related measurement challenges and psychometric models that have been proposed to deal with the challenges are discussed. It is argued that addressing individual differences in the speed-ability trade-off requires the control of item response times. In this way, response behavior can be captured exclusively with the response variable remedying problems in traditional measurement approaches. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): This study explores the relationship between out-of-home behavior and daily mood of community-dwelling older adults with different levels of cognitive impairment across four consecutive weeks. The sample included 16 persons with
early stage Alzheimer's disease (AD), 30 persons with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 95 cognitively healthy persons (CH). Using a multi-method approach, GPS tracking and daily-diary data were combined on a day-to-day basis. AD and MCI adults showed lower mood than the CH group. Whereas stronger positive links between mood and out-of-home behavior were found for AD compared to the total sample on an aggregate level, predicting daily mood by person (i.e.,
cognition) and occasion-specific characteristics (i.e., mobility and weekday), using multilevel regression analysis revealed no corresponding effect. In conclusion, cognitive status in old age appears to impact on mobility and mood as such, rather than on the mood and out-of-home behavior connection.

Abstract (english): Educational researchers are often confronted with the problem of nonresponse in empirical studies. For studies in the social sciences it is shown that specific administrative strategies can raise the response rate. These possibilities have been rarely investigated in educational studies. The present study investigates the strategies of using incentives and reminders in a large-scale questionnaire study of the parents of N=3935 6th grade students in Berlin. The results show a positive effect of lotteries and reminders on the response rate of the parents. Furthermore there is some evidence to suggest that these strategies may be successful in involving those parents who can be characterized as higher-risk nonrespondents.

Abstract: The solution process underlying the Raven Advanced Progressive Matrices (RAPM) has been conceptualized to consist of two subprocesses: rule induction and goal management. Past research has also found a strong relation between measures of working memory capacity and performance on RAPM. The present research attempted to test whether the goal management subprocess is responsible for the relation between working memory capacity and RAPM, using a paradigm where the rules necessary to solve the problems were given to subjects, assuming that it would render rule induction unnecessary. Three experiments revealed that working memory capacity was still strongly related to RAPM performance in the given-rules condition, while in two experiments the correlation in the given-rules condition was significantly higher than in the no-rules condition. Experiment 4 revealed that giving the rules affected problem solving behavior. Evidence from eye tracking protocols suggested that participants in the given-rules condition were more likely to approach the problems with a constructive matching strategy. Two possible mechanisms are discussed that could both explain why providing participants with the rules might increase the relation between working memory capacity and RAPM performance. (DIPF/Orig.)

Titel: Does number word inversion affect arithmetic processes in adults?

Abstract: Neuropsychological and developmental findings suggest that number word inversion complicates numerical processing. The aim of this study was to look for adverse effects of number word inversion in neurologically healthy adults. Addition problems were presented verbally to native speakers from China and from Germany in two different ways: familiar vs. unfamiliar (i.e., inverted number words in Chinese and non-inverted number words in German). While Chinese participants had more difficulties when confronted with problems presented in unfamiliar Chinese number words, German participants did not show more difficulties solving addition problems presented in the unfamiliar structure. Moreover, for both groups, addition problems were more difficult when a carry operation was needed and this carry effect was more pronounced for German participants. Inverted number words thus seem to complicate arithmetic processing in populations where arithmetic processing is an accomplished skill, highlighting the relevance of finding ways to deal with inversion-related difficulties in mathematics education.
