Abstract (english):
Using data from 1,571 ninth-grade students (Mage = 14.62) from 82 academic track schools in Germany and their predominantly Caucasian middle-class parents, configurations of different family characteristics reported by parents were investigated. Latent profile analyses considering academic involvement, family interest, parents' self-concept, child's need for support, and parents' time and energy identified average, indifferent, motivated and engaged, motivated and disengaged, and involved families. Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations with students' motivational (self-concept, effort, and interest) and achievement outcomes (achievement test and grades) in math were analyzed. Students from families classified as motivated and disengaged showed higher initial levels motivation and achievement. Over 5 months, these students also showed an increase in self-concept and higher achievement than students from other family types. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
There is a large body of research documenting gender differences in school achievement. According to Eccles' (1983; 2015) expectancy-value theory it may be assumed that parental gender beliefs affect their parenting. Therefore, we investigate the association between parents' gender beliefs and their child's achievement in German and math (N = 5.240). Moreover, we investigate the association between parental gender beliefs and other family background characteristics. Regression analyses show that a higher socioeconomic status is related to more egalitarian gender beliefs, whereas an immigrant background (Turky, Eastern Europe, other countries) is associated with more traditional beliefs. Traditional gender beliefs are negatively related to boys and girls achievement in German and math. This effect remains stable when family background characteristics are controlled for. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Our newly proposed integrated academic self-concept model integrates 3 major theories of academic self-concept formation and developmental perspectives into a unified conceptual and methodological framework. Relations among math self-concept (MSC), school grades, test scores, and school-level contextual effects over 6 years, from the end of primary school through the first 5 years of secondary school (a representative sample of 3,370 German students, 42 secondary schools, 50% male, M age at grade 5 = 11.75) support the (1) internal/external frame of reference model: Math school grades had positive effects on MSC, but the effects of German grades were negative; (2) reciprocal effects (longitudinal panel) model: MSC was predictive of and predicted by math test scores and school grades; (3) big-fish-little-pond effect: The effects on MSC were negative for school-average achievement based on 4 indicators (primary school grades in math and German, school-track prior to the start of secondary school, math test scores in the first year of secondary school). Results for all 3 theoretical models were consistent across the 5 secondary school years: This supports the prediction of developmental equilibrium. This integration highlights the robustness of support over the potentially volatile early to middle adolescent period; the interconnectedness and complementarity of 3 ASC models; their counterbalancing strengths and weaknesses; and new theoretical, developmental, and substantive implications at their intersections. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The Austrian educational standards assessment for 8th grade Mathematics in 2012 (BIST-Ü M8 2012), as a complete survey (N= 79,678), allows to compare grades with test performances not only at the population level, but also at the level of classes or learning groups. Corresponding regression and multi-level analyses show that students in the 1st performance group "Hauptschule" receive significantly better marks for the same test performance than students of the "Allgemeinbildende Höhere Schule" (AHS). In addition, girls, children from households with higher social status, and students with an immigrant background achieve better grades than boys, children from households with lower social status, and students without an immigrant background. The results are discussed with regard to possible underlying mechanisms. They reflect the state of grading practice before the nation-wide conversion of secondary schools into "Neue Mittelschulen" (NMS). (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Objective: Although optimism's beneficial role for various life areas is well documented, previous findings regarding its significance for students' achievement at school are inconclusive. This study examined the relation between optimism and academic achievement in early adolescents. It investigated the functional form of this relation, addressed whether the initial achievement level moderates this association, and compared this with effects on self-esteem. Method: We used a large German sample (N56,010; 53.2% females; baseline Mage514.1) with two measurement points over a period of 5 months (middle and end of 7th grade). Estimating LOESS curves and latent change-regression models revealed three main findings. Results: (a) Optimism showed a nonlinear association with subsequent changes in academic achievement: Optimism promoted academic achievement, but this positive association reached a plateau in above-average optimism ranges and a minimum value in below-average ranges of optimism. (b) The achievement level at t1 moderated this relation so that high optimism exerted a more positive effect for high-achieving adolescents. (c) By contrast, optimism had an overall positive effect on self-esteem. Conclusions: The results therefore broaden the evidence on benefits of optimism by linking optimism to academic success in early adolescents but indicate only small and nonlinear associations. Abstract (english):
International Large-Scale Assessment studies (iLSAs) like PISA (the Programme for International Student Assessment) and PIAAC (the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies) employ stringent quality control procedures for the translation of their test items. The translations are crucial: a test item should not become more or less difficult because of its translation, given that test results are used to assess and compare the competency levels of different populations across countries. This article discusses how PISA and PIAAC translation procedures have evolved from earlier translation quality processes, and the underlying assumptions about translation that have shaped this evolution. We then report on findings from a qualitative interview study with translators, reviewers, and translation managers who have been involved in PISA or PIAAC translation processes. The objective of the interview study is to analyse the quality control procedures from the perspective of translation players. How do translators prepare for and perform translations for iLSA studies, and how does this process compare with other translation assignments they receive? This comparison will give an understanding of whether translators, in general, believe the iLSA translation process and its quality control procedures provide adequate guidance for performing these translations. We finish by proposing recommendations for future iLSA translation processes. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Item nonresponse in competence tests pose a threat to a valid and reliable competence measurement, especially if the missing values occur systematically and relate to the unobserved response. This is often the case in the context of large-scale assessments, where the failure to respond to an item relates to examinee ability. Researchers developed methods that consider the dependency between ability and item nonresponse by incorporating a model for the process that causes missing values into the measurement model for ability. These model-based approaches seem very promising and might prove superior to common missing data approaches, which typically fail at taking the dependency between ability and nonresponse into account. Up to this point, the approaches have barely been investigated in terms of applicability and performance with regard to the scaling of competence tests in large-scale assessments. The current dissertation bridges the gap between these theoretically postulated models and their possible implementation in the context of large-scale assessments. It aims at (1) testing the applicability of model-based approaches to competence test data, and (2) evaluating whether and under what missing data conditions these approaches are superior to common missing data approaches. Three research studies were conducted for this purpose. Study 1 investigated the assumptions of model-based approaches, whether they hold in empirical practice, and how violations to those assumptions affect individual person parameters. Study 2 focused on features of examinees' nonresponse behavior, such as its stability across different competence tests and how it relates to other examinee characteristics. Study 3 examined the performance of model-based approaches compared to other approaches. Results demonstrate that model-based approaches can be applied to large-scale assessment data, though slight extensions of the models might enhance accuracy in parameter estimates. Further, persons' tendencies not to respond can be considered person-specific attributes, which are relatively constant across different competence tests and also relate to other stable person characteristics. Findings from the third study confirmed the superiority of the model-based approaches compared to common missing data approaches, although a model that simply ignores missing values also led to acceptable results. Model-based approaches show serval advantages over common missing data approaches. Considering their complexity, however, the benefits and drawbacks from different methods need to be weighed. Important issues in the debate on an appropriate scaling method concern model complexity, consequences on examinees' test-taking behavior, and precision of parameter estimates. For many large-scale assessments, a change in the missing data treatment is clearly necessary. Whether model-based approaches will replace former methods is yet to be determined. They certainly count amongst the most advanced methods to handle missing values in the scaling of competence tests. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract:
