Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Schulstufe. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The internal/external frame of reference (I/E) model assumes the interplay of social and dimensional comparisons in the formation of domain-specific academic self-concepts. The present study tests the generalizability of the I/E model assumptions across students from different ability tracks. While the findings from previous studies implied the similar use of social comparisons with students from different ability tracks, evidence has been missing so far whether students from different ability tracks apply dimensional comparisons to the same extent. Students from lower ability tracks are said to be confronted with negative stereotypes and felt deprivation which might enforce or weaken the use of dimensional comparisons. For the analyses, students from the academic track (N = 702) and the vocational track (N = 528) of German secondary schools were included as these two groups represent two extreme groups of ability tracks which might thus maximize the power of detecting differences in the use of social and dimensional comparisons. Both the original I/E model only including math and verbal achievement and self-concepts measures and an I/E model extended to five school subjects (math, German, English, physics, and biology) were examined. The results indicated invariance across school tracks for both the original I/E model and the extended I/E model when controlling for students' gender, socioeconomic status, and cognitive ability. Abstract:
Using a sample of third grade elementary school students (N = 514), we tested a generalized internal/external frame of reference (GI/E) model using math, verbal, and physical education achievements as predictors, and math, verbal, and physical ability self-concepts and intrinsic values as outcomes. Therefore, the present study adds to the generalizability of the GI/E model across age and to the investigation of dimensional comparisons. The findings replicated the assumptions of the classic internal/external frame of reference model by showing positive within-domain relations between math (verbal) achievements and self-concepts, but negative cross-domain relations. Positive within-domain and negative cross-domain achievement relations were also found for math and verbal intrinsic values. The findings further showed positive relations between achievement and self-concept as well as between achievement and intrinsic value within the physical ability domain. In addition, the findings demonstrated a negative relation between math achievement and physical ability self-concept and between German achievement and physical ability intrinsic value. Hence, the findings indicated that dimensional comparisons operate across academic and non-academic domains. Boys and girls did not differ with regard to the relations among constructs as depicted in the GI/E model. However, differential mean levels of the constructs were found for boys and girls. Abstract (english):
Research has shown that academic self-concepts (ASCs) are subject to contextual influences, in particular to the big-fish-little-pond effect (BFLPE). The BFLPE refers to the phenomenon whereby able students report more negative ASC when exposed to learning environments with relatively higher-achieving students. Although the BFLPE has been identified across various educational settings, there is surprisingly little research on its persistence across contexts. The present study fills this gap and explores the lasting consequences of the BFLPE for ASC development after the transition from one educational context to another. It draws on a longitudinal study of N = 1,617 students from Grades 6 to 9, which followed students across the transition from elementary to secondary school. We found indications of cross-sectional BFLPEs in both elementary and secondary schools for all 3 of the ASC dimensions we investigated (general academic, German language arts, and mathematics). Yet, after students had transitioned into secondary schools, the effects of the elementary school context persisted to a certain extent, but this varied by self-concept domain: for general ASC (GASC), some elementary school effects remained during secondary schooling, alongside the new effect of the secondary school context. For German language arts and mathematics self-concepts, the BFLPE from elementary school faded after students transitioned from elementary school. BFLPEs varied by secondary school track for synchronous, cross-sectional effects but not for longitudinal elementary school effects. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Researchers from different fields have developed different observational instruments to capture instructional quality with a focus on generic versus content-specific dimensions or a combination of both. As this work is fast accumulating, the need to explore synergies and complementarities among existing work on instruction and its quality becomes imperative, given the complexity of instruction and the increasing realization that different frameworks illuminate certain instructional aspects but leave others less visible. This special issue makes a step toward exploring such synergies and complementarities, drawing on the analysis of the same 3 elementary-school lessons by 11 groups using 12 different frameworks. The purpose of the current paper is to provide an up-to-date overview of prior attempts made to work at the intersection of different observational frameworks. The paper also serves as the reference point for the other papers included in the special issue, by defining the goals and research questions driving the explorations presented in each paper, outlining the criteria for selecting the frameworks included in the special issue, describing the sampling approaches for the selected lessons, presenting the content of these lessons, and providing an overview of the structure of each paper. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
This article investigates the notion of 'practical mathematics' and its evolution over the last third of the eighteenth and first third of the nineteenth century. Two detailed case studies, taken together, give a sense of both the richness and the difficulties of what practical knowledge could mean at the turn of the nineteenth century. After some preliminary remarks about the institutional context and the social status of practical mathematicians (actually mathematical practitioners) in the German regions the first case study is dedicated to the mining master Johann Andreas Scheidhauer (1718-1784). The biography of this previously unknown mathematical practitioner leads to an analysis of his writings and their reception, after which we analyze the diffusion of his work, most prominently through J. F. Lempe, professor of mathematics at the Freiberg mining academy. The second case study deals with a practitioner from the following generation: the architect Carl Friedrich Steiner (1774-1840), who lived in Weimar as a contemporary of Goethe. In a certain sense his textbook on Geometry descriptive reflects the consequences of the ongoing mathematisation, the status of mathematical knowledge for the training of young artisans and artists. Both case studies provide information about the historical understanding of practical mathematics. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The purpose of this study is to examine whether teacher enthusiasm and classroom management self-efficacy are related to classroom mastery orientation and student motivation. We used data from 803 students in grades 9 and 10 (53.3% girls) and their mathematics teachers (N = 41; 58.5% men). Student-perceived teacher enthusiasm was related to classroom mastery orientation as well as to intrinsic value and cost at the student level. Teacher-reported selfefficacy was related to classroom mastery orientation at the classroom level. At both the individual and the classroom level, classroom mastery orientation was related to attainment and utility value. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Our newly proposed integrated academic self-concept model integrates 3 major theories of academic self-concept formation and developmental perspectives into a unified conceptual and methodological framework. Relations among math self-concept (MSC), school grades, test scores, and school-level contextual effects over 6 years, from the end of primary school through the first 5 years of secondary school (a representative sample of 3,370 German students, 42 secondary schools, 50% male, M age at grade 5 = 11.75) support the (1) internal/external frame of reference model: Math school grades had positive effects on MSC, but the effects of German grades were negative; (2) reciprocal effects (longitudinal panel) model: MSC was predictive of and predicted by math test scores and school grades; (3) big-fish-little-pond effect: The effects on MSC were negative for school-average achievement based on 4 indicators (primary school grades in math and German, school-track prior to the start of secondary school, math test scores in the first year of secondary school). Results for all 3 theoretical models were consistent across the 5 secondary school years: This supports the prediction of developmental equilibrium. This integration highlights the robustness of support over the potentially volatile early to middle adolescent period; the interconnectedness and complementarity of 3 ASC models; their counterbalancing strengths and weaknesses; and new theoretical, developmental, and substantive implications at their intersections. Abstract (english):
An emerging literature demonstrates that relevance interventions, which ask students to produce written reflections on how what they are learning relates to their lives, improve student learning outcomes. As part of a randomized evaluation of a relevance intervention (N D 1,978 students from 82 ninth grade classes), we used Complier Average Causal Effects (CACE) to identify the effect of the intervention on participants who were assigned to the intervention group and were actually compliant with the intervention (i.e., treatment fidelity or compliance). Results revealed larger differences for compliers than noncompliers, although this impact depended on several factors. Implications for the application of CACE models in educational interventions, in general, and relevance interventions, in particular, are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)
