Abstract:
With the growing popularity of intensive longitudinal research, the modeling techniques and software options for such data are also expanding rapidly. Here we use dynamic multilevel modeling, as it is incorporated in the new dynamic structural equation modeling (DSEM) toolbox in Mplus, to analyze the affective data from the COGITO study. These data consist of two samples of over 100 individuals each who were measured for about 100 days. We use composite scores of positive and negative affect and apply a multilevel vector autoregressive model to allow for individual differences in means, autoregressions, and cross-lagged effects. Then we extend the model to include random residual variances and covariance, and finally we investigate whether prior depression affects later depression scores through the random effects of the daily diary measures. We end with discussing several urgent-but mostly unresolved-issues in the area of dynamic multilevel modeling. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The authors examined the extent to which classroom-specific relationships between students' gender and their reading achievement and enjoyment of reading are associated with student-perceived teaching quality. Based on a sample of 10,543 ninth-grade students from 427 classrooms, multilevel analyses revealed that effective classroom management, adequate pacing, and a strong focus on language competencies were related to a less pronounced increase of girls' advantage in reading achievement during Grade 9. High levels of teacher support and focus on language competencies were related to smaller gender differences in enjoyment of reading at the beginning of Grade 9, though not associated with change of these differences over the school year. Our findings suggest that high teaching quality is not only related to higher reading achievement and reading enjoyment in classrooms as a whole, but may also help to mitigate the increase of gender gaps in reading achievement and motivation commonly observed in secondary school. Abstract:
A. Rückmeldungen gegeben werden. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Formative Assessment (FA) refers to eliciting evidence about students' understanding and using the information to support learning, e. g. via individual feedback. There is evidence that FA fosters students' motivation, but less is known about the underlying processes. The present study investigates direct effects of FA on intrinsic motivation as well as the mediating role of students' perceived competence, drawing on Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory. In a randomized, controlled trial, primary school teachers were either assigned to an FA training (n = 17) or to a control group (CG; n = 11). All teachers then taught two science units in their classrooms (FA: n = 319 students, CG: n = 232). Multilevel regression analyses showed a higher perceived competence and a marginally higher intrinsic motivation for FA students after unit 1. After unit 2, both intrinsic motivation and perceived competence were higher in the FA condition, and the impact on intrinsic motivation was significantly mediated by students' perceived competence after the first unit. These results confirm and extend previous findings on the effectiveness of formative assessment on motivational outcomes. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Our newly proposed integrated academic self-concept model integrates 3 major theories of academic self-concept formation and developmental perspectives into a unified conceptual and methodological framework. Relations among math self-concept (MSC), school grades, test scores, and school-level contextual effects over 6 years, from the end of primary school through the first 5 years of secondary school (a representative sample of 3,370 German students, 42 secondary schools, 50% male, M age at grade 5 = 11.75) support the (1) internal/external frame of reference model: Math school grades had positive effects on MSC, but the effects of German grades were negative; (2) reciprocal effects (longitudinal panel) model: MSC was predictive of and predicted by math test scores and school grades; (3) big-fish-little-pond effect: The effects on MSC were negative for school-average achievement based on 4 indicators (primary school grades in math and German, school-track prior to the start of secondary school, math test scores in the first year of secondary school). Results for all 3 theoretical models were consistent across the 5 secondary school years: This supports the prediction of developmental equilibrium. This integration highlights the robustness of support over the potentially volatile early to middle adolescent period; the interconnectedness and complementarity of 3 ASC models; their counterbalancing strengths and weaknesses; and new theoretical, developmental, and substantive implications at their intersections. Abstract (english):
People experience frustration of their basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness) in daily life, but does this frustration trigger motivation to restore this need and, in turn, to attain need satisfaction? The present study explored the temporal dynamics of need dissatisfaction, motivation, and satisfaction in an ecological momentary assessment (N=58; ten daily assessments of need satisfaction, dissatisfaction and motivation for five days). While need dissatisfaction did not predict need motivation overall, need motivation predicted need satisfaction within a day for competence, and across days for relatedness. Potential explanations for this pattern of results are discussed. Findings emphasize the importance of specifying the time frame over which dynamic effects evolve and acknowledging differences between the needs. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The aim of this study was to contribute to the understanding of the effectiveness of formative assessment interventions by analysing how the quality of programme delivery affects students' mathematics achievement and interest. Teachers (n = 17) implemented formative assessment in their ninth-grade mathematics classes and provided their students (n = 426) with written process-oriented feedback. Four feedback characteristics (number of feedback comments, specificity, feedback at self level, social reference norm) and two types of embedment of feedback in the instructional context (focus on feedback utilisation, focus on performance evaluation) were evaluated. Multilevel regression analyses revealed no significant effects of feedback characteristics on interest but negative effects of number of feedback comments and specificity on achievement in mathematics. Positive effects on mathematics achievement and interest were found when feedback was embedded in instruction and had emphasis on feedback utilisation. Students' interest also was affected positively when performance evaluation was stressed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Formative assessment is considered to be a promising teaching practice for promoting teaching and learning processes. The implementation of teaching practices into instruction involves intervening with a learning environment that is characterised by certain features of instructional quality. Our study aims to contribute to the understanding of formative assessment by analysing the interplay between a formative assessment intervention and aspects of general instructional quality. In a quasi-experimental study design, 15 teachers participated in a control group (n = 361 students) and 20 teachers in the intervention classes (n = 498 students) implemented a curriculum-embedded formative assessment tool in their ninth-grade mathematics classes. No effects were found for the intervention on the assessed aspects of general instructional quality (process-oriented instruction, teacher-student relationship, effective use of instructional time). However, multilevel regression analyses revealed an interaction effect between the intervention and process-orientation and the effective use of instruction time. Our findings suggest that implementing formative assessment tools do not seem to suffice regarding changes in general instructional quality, but that an intervention with detailed material and guidelines can counterbalance effects of instructional quality, fostering students' achievement in classes with lower degrees of process orientation and a less effective use of instructional time. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The Austrian educational standards assessment for 8th grade Mathematics in 2012 (BIST-Ü M8 2012), as a complete survey (N= 79,678), allows to compare grades with test performances not only at the population level, but also at the level of classes or learning groups. Corresponding regression and multi-level analyses show that students in the 1st performance group "Hauptschule" receive significantly better marks for the same test performance than students of the "Allgemeinbildende Höhere Schule" (AHS). In addition, girls, children from households with higher social status, and students with an immigrant background achieve better grades than boys, children from households with lower social status, and students without an immigrant background. The results are discussed with regard to possible underlying mechanisms. They reflect the state of grading practice before the nation-wide conversion of secondary schools into "Neue Mittelschulen" (NMS). (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
A drawback of video-based analysis of teaching lies in its high cost in terms of time and money. The present study examines the possibility of assessing instructional features on the basis of very short observations, respectively first impressions. We applied the so-called thin-slices technique: This procedure which uses judgements based on first impressions has shown high reliability and validity in the assessment of various psychological constructs. In two studies untrained raters judged 37 elementary school teachers regarding three dimensions of instructional quality based on 30-second randomly selected sequences from full classroom videos. Both showed very high interrater reliabilities. While descriptive analyses indicate a rather undifferentiated judging process, multilevel regression analyses predicting students' achievement gain via ratings of instructional quality indicate a certain predictive validity of first impressions.
