Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
It is widely known that boys, on average, have lower reading competencies than girls. With respect to the development of reading competencies, research has yet to determine whether performance differences between genders increase, decrease, or remain stable over the course of secondary school. Some studies, mainly from the United Kingdom and the United States, suggest that an increase in performance differences between boys and girls is related to the development of students from families with low socioeconomic status. Moreover, students' immigration background and the school track have been discussed as a moderator. In the present study, the aforementioned research questions were addressed with data from 2,505 students from Germany. Using data collected at four time points (Grades 5 - 8), we applied latent growth curve modeling to analyze the competence areas reading speed and reading comprehension. The results showed a fan-spread effect that illustrated a disadvantage for boys in reading speed and comprehension. No fan-spread effects of reading performance growth occurred in relation to socioeconomic status or immigration background. Furthermore, the analyses showed that the gender-related fan-spread effects were not moderated by socioeconomic status or immigration background. The school track was not a significant moderator of the gender effects. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The issue of implementing large-scale reforms has played an important role both in the past as well as in current debates on structural changes and quality measures in education. When putting reforms into practice, individual schools and their leaders, who take a key role in reform processes, are focused. In the context of a comprehensive school reform in Berlin, this contribution presents an implementation of the Stages of Concern Questionnaire (SoCQ, Hall and Hord 2011), which intends to assess the degree of participants' engagement with innovations in a phased respectively stepwise approach. Recently, the SoCQ questionnaire has been used to build different profiles or types of engagement in reform. Based on N = 196 school leaders, latent profile analyses thus served to identify five types of profiles. Altogether, they indicate that the majority of school leaders are ready to implement the reform and contribute to its optimization. A rather small group remained skeptical with regard to the school reform. With respect to individual leadership characteristics, differences in profile composition could be found for gender, school type, and professional experience. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Using data from 1,571 ninth-grade students (Mage = 14.62) from 82 academic track schools in Germany and their predominantly Caucasian middle-class parents, configurations of different family characteristics reported by parents were investigated. Latent profile analyses considering academic involvement, family interest, parents' self-concept, child's need for support, and parents' time and energy identified average, indifferent, motivated and engaged, motivated and disengaged, and involved families. Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations with students' motivational (self-concept, effort, and interest) and achievement outcomes (achievement test and grades) in math were analyzed. Students from families classified as motivated and disengaged showed higher initial levels motivation and achievement. Over 5 months, these students also showed an increase in self-concept and higher achievement than students from other family types. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The authors examined the extent to which classroom-specific relationships between students' gender and their reading achievement and enjoyment of reading are associated with student-perceived teaching quality. Based on a sample of 10,543 ninth-grade students from 427 classrooms, multilevel analyses revealed that effective classroom management, adequate pacing, and a strong focus on language competencies were related to a less pronounced increase of girls' advantage in reading achievement during Grade 9. High levels of teacher support and focus on language competencies were related to smaller gender differences in enjoyment of reading at the beginning of Grade 9, though not associated with change of these differences over the school year. Our findings suggest that high teaching quality is not only related to higher reading achievement and reading enjoyment in classrooms as a whole, but may also help to mitigate the increase of gender gaps in reading achievement and motivation commonly observed in secondary school. Abstract:
A. Rückmeldungen gegeben werden. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Formative Assessment (FA) refers to eliciting evidence about students' understanding and using the information to support learning, e. g. via individual feedback. There is evidence that FA fosters students' motivation, but less is known about the underlying processes. The present study investigates direct effects of FA on intrinsic motivation as well as the mediating role of students' perceived competence, drawing on Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory. In a randomized, controlled trial, primary school teachers were either assigned to an FA training (n = 17) or to a control group (CG; n = 11). All teachers then taught two science units in their classrooms (FA: n = 319 students, CG: n = 232). Multilevel regression analyses showed a higher perceived competence and a marginally higher intrinsic motivation for FA students after unit 1. After unit 2, both intrinsic motivation and perceived competence were higher in the FA condition, and the impact on intrinsic motivation was significantly mediated by students' perceived competence after the first unit. These results confirm and extend previous findings on the effectiveness of formative assessment on motivational outcomes. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)
Abstract (english):
The authors of the article analyse the software platform Antolin, that is very famous in german schools and should help to support reading literacy of students. But instead of liberating the student from using the platform, it ties them to the product and works therefore against the pedagogical aim of educating a mature subject. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english):
The purpose of this study is to examine whether teacher enthusiasm and classroom management self-efficacy are related to classroom mastery orientation and student motivation. We used data from 803 students in grades 9 and 10 (53.3% girls) and their mathematics teachers (N = 41; 58.5% men). Student-perceived teacher enthusiasm was related to classroom mastery orientation as well as to intrinsic value and cost at the student level. Teacher-reported selfefficacy was related to classroom mastery orientation at the classroom level. At both the individual and the classroom level, classroom mastery orientation was related to attainment and utility value. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
An emerging literature demonstrates that relevance interventions, which ask students to produce written reflections on how what they are learning relates to their lives, improve student learning outcomes. As part of a randomized evaluation of a relevance intervention (N D 1,978 students from 82 ninth grade classes), we used Complier Average Causal Effects (CACE) to identify the effect of the intervention on participants who were assigned to the intervention group and were actually compliant with the intervention (i.e., treatment fidelity or compliance). Results revealed larger differences for compliers than noncompliers, although this impact depended on several factors. Implications for the application of CACE models in educational interventions, in general, and relevance interventions, in particular, are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
People experience frustration of their basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness) in daily life, but does this frustration trigger motivation to restore this need and, in turn, to attain need satisfaction? The present study explored the temporal dynamics of need dissatisfaction, motivation, and satisfaction in an ecological momentary assessment (N=58; ten daily assessments of need satisfaction, dissatisfaction and motivation for five days). While need dissatisfaction did not predict need motivation overall, need motivation predicted need satisfaction within a day for competence, and across days for relatedness. Potential explanations for this pattern of results are discussed. Findings emphasize the importance of specifying the time frame over which dynamic effects evolve and acknowledging differences between the needs. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Low arousal states (especially boredom) have been shown to be more deleterious to learning than high arousal states, though the latter have received much more attention (e.g., test anxiety, confusion, and frustration). Aiming at profiling arousal in the classroom (how active students are) and examining how activation levels relate to achievement, we studied sympathetic arousal during two runs of an elective advanced physics course in a real classroom setting, including the course exam. Participants were high school students (N = 24) who were randomly selected from the course population. Arousal was indexed from electrodermal activity, measured unobtrusively via the Empatica E4 wristband. Low arousal was the level with the highest incidence (60% of the lesson on average) and longest persistence, lasting on average three times longer than medium arousal and two times longer than high arousal level occurrences. During the course exam, arousal was positively and highly correlated (r = .66) with achievement as measured by the students' grades. Implications for a need to focus more on addressing low arousal states in learning are discussed, together with potential applications for biofeedback, teacher intervention, and instructional design.
