Abstract (english): Many studies suggest that age differences in a variety of cognitive tasks are due to age-related changes in executive control processes. However, not all executive control processes seem to be age-sensitive. Recently, Verhaeghen and colleagues (e.g., Verhaeghen et al. 2005) described dissociable age effects in an executive control process responsible for the switching of representations between different functional units of working memory. This so called focus-switching process has two components: (1) the switching of representations from an activated part of long-term memory into a region of immediate access (focus of attention) and (2) the maintenance of representations outside the focus of attention. Age-related deficits occurred in maintaining representations outside the focus of attention, but were absent in switching representations into and out of the focus of attention (e.g., Dorbath and Titz 2011). In the present study we applied a training approach to examine age-related differences in the trainability of maintenance and switching. We investigated 85 younger (age 19-35, M=24.07, SD=3.79) and 91 older (age 59-80, M=66.27, SD=4.75) adults using a continuous counting task in a pretest-training-posttest design. The participants were assigned to one of four training conditions differing in the demand to switch or to maintain. The results suggest the influence of training in both components of focus-switching for both, younger and older adults. However, age differences in the amount of training gains were observed. With respect to maintenance the results indicate a compensatory effect of training for older adults who improved their performance to the level of younger adults. With respect to switching, younger adults benefitted more from training than older adults. Trainability is thus reduced in older adults with respect to switching, but not for maintenance.

Abstract (english): Event-related potentials (ERPs) were obtained from an identity priming task, where a green target had to be selected¤against a superimposed red distractor. Several priming conditions were realized in a mix of control ( CO), negative¤priming (NP), and positive priming (PP) trials. PP and NP effects in reaction times (RTs) were significant. ERP results¤conceptually replicate earlier findings of left-posterior P300 reduction in PP and NP trials compared to CO. This ERP¤effect may reflect the detection of prime-probe similarity corresponding to the concept of a retrieval cue. A novel¤finding concerned amplitude increase of the frontal late positive complex (LPC) in the order NP, CO, and PP. NP¤therefore seemed to induce brain activity related to cognitive control and/or memory processes, with reduced LPC¤amplitude indicating effortful processing. Overall, retrieval-based explanations of identity NP are supported. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Does plasticity contribute to adult cognitive development, and if so, in what ways? The vague and overused concept of plasticity makes these controversial questions difficult to answer. In this article, we refine the notion of adult cognitive plasticity and sharpen its conceptual distinctiveness. According to our framework, adult cognitive plasticity is driven by a prolonged mismatch between functional organismic supplies and environmental demands and denotes the brain's capacity for anatomically implementing reactive changes in behavioral flexibility (i.e., the possible range of performance and function). We distinguish between 2 interconnected but distinct cognitive outcomes of adult cognitive plasticity: alterations in processing efficiency and alterations in representations. We demonstrate the usefulness of our framework in evaluating and interpreting (a) increments in frontal brain activations in the course of normal aging and (b) the effects of cognitive training in adulthood and old age. Finally, we outline new research questions and predictions generated by the present framework and recommend design features for future cognitive-training studies. (DIPF/Orig.)

Titel: Tomatoes and apples or red and green lines. Are age-related interference effects based on competition among concepts or percepts?

Abstract (english): Using a negative priming paradigm, the authors tested whether age-related interference effects are due to age differences in perceptual distractibility or in resolving conceptual competition. In samples of 40 younger adults ( aged 22-34) and 40 older adults (aged 58-76), the authors found a greater reduction in processing speed for older than for younger adults in trials in which targets were superimposed with distracting objects as compared to single-target trials. When trials were paralleled for perceptual features, that is, when single-target trials were supplemented with nonsense distractors, the age effect became nonsignificant. The results suggest that age-related interferenceeffects are primarily due to age differences in perceptual distractibility. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english): Test- and item-characteristics of the subtest "Sentence Verification" from the reading skills test ELVES (efficiency of reading comprehension in adult readers according to the strategy model) were analyzed using hierarchical linear models. The subtest Sentence Verification captures the efficiency of lower level component reading processes (lexical access, semantic integration) through scores that rely primarily on decision latencies. The present article firstly investigates whether decision latencies can be decomposed into an additive combination of item- and person-parameters (specific objectivity). Secondly, and adding to the validity of latency-based measures of reading skills, it is shown that the decision latencies in the subtest Sentence Verification are not subject to a speed-accuracy-tradeoff. Thirdly, it is shown that differences in decision latencies between items are due to item characteristics that can be assumed to influence processing difficulty from the perspectives of cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics. In sum, the subtest Sentence Verification appears to approximately satisfy the condition of specific objectivity, and capture the targeted reading component processes' efficiency.

Abstract (english): Three negative priming studies were carried out to examine whether this paradigm allows a separation of the effects of aging on access, deletion, and restraint control of inhibition. In each study 24 younger (18-35) and 24 older (57-82) adults were asked to identify pictures. The results reveal difficulties among older adults in preventing the access of distracting perceptual input into responses; however, the ability to restrain inappropriate answers and the ability to delete once- relevant information are not affected by age.
