Abstract: One puzzling finding in education research is that teachers, students, and external observers agree only marginally on their ratings of teaching quality. In this theoretical contribution, we summarize and reappraise previous findings on agreement between different raters of teaching quality. We explain these findings by thoroughly examining the instruments that have been used to measure teaching quality. Building on this, we propose a reference perspective matrix, which should be useful in explaining perspective-specific rating mechanisms behind responses to certain survey or observation items. The reference perspective matrix could thus afford a theoretical foundation for future studies on the assessment of teaching quality. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Teaching practices are pivotal for student learning. Due to pedagogical traditions and national cultures, the structure of teaching practices may differ across countries. This study investigates the structure of teaching practices across 12 countries grouped into four major linguistic/cultural clusters. First, factor analysis is applied to investigate if the theoretical distinction between teacher-directed and student-centred practices is generalizable across countries. Then, network analysis is used to explore how individual classroom assessment practices relate to either teacher-directed or student-centred practices. Main findings include that: (1) teacher-directed and student-centred practices are two distinct factors across countries; (2) the overall structure and connectivity of teaching practices differs across countries, with smaller differences within linguistic/cultural clusters; and (3) assessment practices with the aim to structure and guide learning strongly relate to teacher-directed practices, whereas assessment practices with the aim to individualize instruction more relate to student-centred practices. We discuss the global patterning and implications.

Abstract: The present study investigated whether the varying referents (i.e., teacher or student referent) of student ratings of established classroom management measures differ in their associations with compositional classroom characteristics and students' math achievement. Re-analysis of a large-scale dataset (PISA 2003) showed that classrooms with a higher proportion of male students, as well as those with lower math performance, exhibited lower scores on classroom management factors referring more to students than the teacher. These were in turn related to lower pre-adjusted math achievement of students. There were no associations with a measure referring to the teacher. Our results indicate that varying referents tap into different aspects of the classroom management process. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): We are interested in identifying "malleable" school and classroom practices to enhance immigrant students' learning. Using PISA 2015 data from Germany, Italy, and Spain we test the differential associations of school-level practices with achievement and sense of belonging at school for students with and without an immigrant background. We found that (1) in-school ability grouping was invariably, negatively related to achievement of both student groups, and the effects were stronger for immigrant than nonimmigrant students; (3) grading based on "hard" factors was not related to achievement, but it showed differential associations with sense of belonging in Germany; (4) grading based on "soft" factors and provision of extracurricular activities also showed mixed associations with the outcomes across countries and did not fulfil the potential to enhance immigrant students' outcomes. We discuss these findings and implications. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: The Generalized Internal/External Frame of Reference Model offers a framework according to which the perception of teacher characteristics might impact on students' motivation within and between subjects. In the present study, relations between perceived teacher unfairness and student motivation in math and German were examined. In a sample of N = 1685 German secondary school students, perceived teacher unfairness was found to be negatively related with student self-concept, interest, and importance of doing well on the task within the subjects of math and German, while being positively related with the three aspects of student motivation between subjects. Mediation analyses revealed partial mediation through academic self-concept within, and complete mediation between subjects. The results imply that students' motivation in one subject is not only related to perceived teacher characteristics in the corresponding subject, but also to the experiences that these students make with teachers in another subject. Abstract (english): Teacher-assigned grades provide important information that is used by universities and colleges to make admission decisions and by employers to make hiring decisions. Besides grades, the results of standardized achievement tests are frequently used for student selection and allocation. However, correlations between the two achievement measures are far from perfect, and researchers have argued that this discrepancy can be at least partially attributed to norm-referenced grading, which is based on the composition of performance in a class. In this study, we investigated the results of a curricular intensification reform, which introduced changes in the distribution of student performance by making enrollment in certain courses mandatory. We investigated whether the reform resulted in changes in the relationship between standardized achievement-test results and teacher-assigned grades. We analyzed cohort control design data from two large representative samples of students from two German states (Baden-Württemberg: N = 5,574; Thuringia: N = 2,202) before and after the reform. Results indicated that students who received a certain grade before the reform (e.g., a grade of A, B, C, or D) differed in their standardized test performance from students who received the same grade after the reform. Furthermore, in math, course-level-specific reform effects on the association between grades and standardized test performance were found to vary between groups of students receiving good and poor grades. Implications for educational policy and school reforms and suggestions for grading are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): In Germany, many children grow up speaking more than one language - which can be a potential risk for the acquisition of written language if the language of instruction German is not sufficiently mastered. Important foundations for the literacy acquisition are already laid before school entry. The present study addresses the question of whether the prediction of reading and spelling performance through pre-school skills is comparable for monolingual German children and multilingual children. In 162 monolingual and 143 multilingual children, pho-nological awareness, naming speed, phonological loop and behavioral self-regulation were assessed in the last year of kindergarten. At the end of the first grade, reading fluency, reading comprehension and spelling were assessed. Structural equation models showed partially differential prediction patterns for the groups: In the multilingual children only naming speed was predictive of reading fluency, in the monolingual children the phonological loop was an additional predictor. For reading comprehension and spelling, only phonological awareness was predictive in the multilingual children, while in the monolingual children naming speed was also predictive. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: In Germany, male students are largely overrepresented in STEM majors at university. Gender differences in important predictors of major choices, namely self-concept and interest in math or science have been discussed to explain the gender gap in STEM. For both, self-concept and interest, social comparisons with peers are important (big-fish-little-pond effect - BFLPE). Recent findings have further shown indirect long-term BFLPEs in high school on STEM major choice at university through students' self-concept and interest. We built on these findings and investigated if differential BFLPEs on females' and males' self-concepts and interests in high school could help understand gendered enrollment processes in math intensive university majors. We used a subsample (N = 2182) of a German longitudinal study and used data from two measurement points (T1: 12th grade; T2: two years after high school graduation). Results showed gender differences in math self-concept, math achievement, and enrollment in math intensive university majors. The BFLPE on self-concept, interest and university major choice did not differ between female and male students. These findings point to gender differences in the means of relevant predictors of university major choice, but to gender similarity in the underlying processes of self-concept formation and university major choice.
