Abstract:
This study extends the classic constructive dialogue/debate between self-concept and self-efficacy researchers (Marsh, Roche, Pajares, & Miller, 1997) regarding the distinctions between these 2 constructs. The study is a substantive-methodological synergy, bringing together new substantive, theoretical, and statistical models and developing new tests of the classic jingle-jangle fallacy. We demonstrate that in a representative sample of 3,350 students from math classes in 43 German schools, generalized math self-efficacy and math outcome expectancies were indistinguishable from math self-concept, but were distinct from test-related and functional measures of self-efficacy. This is consistent with the jingle-jangle fallacies that are proposed. On the basis of pretest variables, we demonstrate negative frame-of-reference effects in social (big-fish-little-pond effect) and dimensional (internal/external frame-of-reference effect) comparisons for three self-concept-like constructs in each of the first 4 years of secondary school. In contrast, none of the frame-of-reference effects were significantly negative for either of the two self-efficacy-like constructs in any of the 4 years of testing. After controlling for pretest variables, each of the 3 self-concept-like constructs (math self-concept, outcome expectancy, and generalized math self-efficacy) in each of the 4 years of secondary school was more strongly related to posttest outcomes (school grades, test scores, future aspirations) than were the corresponding 2 self-efficacy-like factors. Extending discussion by Marsh et al. (1997), we clarify distinctions between self-efficacy and self-concept; the role of evaluation, worthiness, and outcome expectancy in self-efficacy measures; and complications in generalized and global measures of self-efficacy. Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between social background and the transition to a doctoral degree, based on data from a longitudinal study (N = 2214) conducted in Germany. Drawing on theoretical concepts developed by Boudon (1974) and Erikson and Jonsson (1996), the study investigates what proportion of the social background effect is transmitted via performance differences (primary effect) and the degree to which mechanisms of a cost-benefit analysis (secondary effect) and educational biographical factors can contribute to the explanation. Tertiary graduates from more highly educated family backgrounds are found to have a higher probability of transitioning to a doctoral programme, especially if they have at least one parent who holds a doctoral degree. The effect decomposition shows that nearly half of the social background effect can be attributed to differences in final secondary school and university marks and to performance on standardised tests. On closer examination, the social background effect can mainly be traced back to differences in final marks and in the choice of subject and type of tertiary institution. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The authors examined the extent to which classroom-specific relationships between students' gender and their reading achievement and enjoyment of reading are associated with student-perceived teaching quality. Based on a sample of 10,543 ninth-grade students from 427 classrooms, multilevel analyses revealed that effective classroom management, adequate pacing, and a strong focus on language competencies were related to a less pronounced increase of girls' advantage in reading achievement during Grade 9. High levels of teacher support and focus on language competencies were related to smaller gender differences in enjoyment of reading at the beginning of Grade 9, though not associated with change of these differences over the school year. Our findings suggest that high teaching quality is not only related to higher reading achievement and reading enjoyment in classrooms as a whole, but may also help to mitigate the increase of gender gaps in reading achievement and motivation commonly observed in secondary school. Abstract (english):
Background: The gender gap in reading literacy is repeatedly found in large-scale assessments. This study compared girls' and boys' text responses in a reading test applying natural language processing. For this, a theoretical framework was compiled that allows mapping of response features to the preceding cognitive components such as micro- and macropropositions from the situation model. Methods: In total, n = 33,604 responses from the German sample of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 reading test have been analyzed for characterizing the genders' typical cognitive approaches. The analyses mainly explored the gender gap by contrasting groups of responses typical for either gender. These gender-specific responses characterize the typical responding of the genders to PISA reading questions. Results: Responses typical for girls contained three to five more proposition entities from the situation model, irrespective of the response correctness. They integrated more relevant propositions and constituted better fits to the question focus. That means, in answering questions which ask for explicit information from the stimulus text, the typical girl responses appropriately encompassed more micropropositions, and typical boy responses tended to include more macropropositions-vice versa for questions requesting implicit information. Conclusion: It appears that typical boy responses to PISA reading questions are characterized by struggling with retrieving and integrating propositions from the situation model. The typical girl liberally juggles these to formulate the responses. The results demonstrate that text responses are a neglected but informative source for educational large-scale assessments made accessible through natural language processing.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Gender differences have frequently been reported for educational outcomes. Despite indications that these differences do not occur independently from social background, the recicprocity of effects has so far inadequately been addressed in quantitative research. Drawing on a representative sample of fourth graders in Germany (N=5240), the study investigates whether gender effects on educational outcomes are moderated by socioeconomic status (SES). According to the findings, the influence of gender varies with the SES in maths achievement and maths grade as well as in the teacher's recommendation for the academic track at this early point in the children's biography. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Based on the Austrian sample of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2011, the effects of number of children and birth order on homework support and mathematics performance test scores were examined. The aim was to find evidence for the confluence model developed by Zajonc and Markus (1975; Zajonc, 2001), and especially for the tutoring effect postulated by this model. The results (based on N = 3,016 cases) showed decreasing homework support by parents and increasing assistance by siblings with a growing number of children in the family. In addition, the pattern of the performance test scores by number of children and birth order followed less the assumptions of a model that took into account the parents' resources alone than the assumptions of a model that additionally referred to siblings as a resource as well as a learning opportunity (tutoring effect). Strategies for further tests of the tutoring effect are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Empirical studies have demonstrated that students who are taught in a group of students with higher average achievement benefit in terms of their achievement. However, there is also evidence showing that being surrounded by high-achieving students has a negative effect on students' academic self-concept, also known as the big-fish-little-pond effect. In view of the reciprocal relationship between achievement and academic self-concept, the present study aims to scrutinize how the average achievement of a class affects students' achievement and academic self-concept, and how that, in turn, affects subsequent achievement and academic self-concept. Using a sample of 6,463 seventh-graders from 285 classes in Germany, multilevel path models showed that the class-average achievement at the beginning of the school year positively affected individual achievement in the middle and at the end of the school year, and negative effects on academic self-concept occurred only at the beginning of Grade 7, but not later in the school year. In addition, mediation analyses revealed that the effects of class-average achievement on students' achievement and academic self-concept at the end of the school year were mediated by midterm achievement, but not by midterm academic self-concept. This pattern was found for mathematics, biology, physics, and English as a foreign language. The results of our study indicate that the consequences for students of belonging to a group of high-achieving students should be analyzed with respect to both academic self-concept and achievement. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
