Abstract:
This three-wave, longitudinal study explored the math self-concept of German preschool children (N = 420) with respect to its differentiation into competence and affect components, cross-sectional and longitudinal relations to early math achievement, and invariance across gender. Findings demonstrated that preschool children's math self-concept can be separated into competence and affect components, with the competence component displaying higher relations to early math achievement than the affect component. The competence component but not the affect component was found to be related to prior math achievement, providing evidence of the skill-development model of self-concept-achievement relations in preschool years. Boys and girls demonstrated similar self-concept-achievement relations and mean levels in the competence and affect components of math self-concept. Given so far little research on self-concept in preschool children, this study offers important insights and expands current knowledge. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Studies investigating the effects of emotional exhaustion among teachers have primarily focused on its relations with teacher-related outcome variables but little research has been done for examining its relations with student outcomes. Therefore, this study examines the relations between teachers' emotional exhaustion and educational outcomes among students. Students' educational outcomes considered here cover a wide range of cognitive (i.e., achievement in terms of school grades and standardized achievement test scores) and noncognitive (competence self-perceptions, school satisfaction, and perceptions of teacher support) outcomes. The analyses are based on the PIRLS 2006 German data including 380 teachers and 7,899 4th grade students. The results demonstrated direct negative relations between teachers' emotional exhaustion and the class average of students' school grades, standardized achievement test scores, school satisfaction, and perceptions of teacher support, but not competence self-perceptions. At the individual student level, the results showed significant relations between noncognitive outcomes and academic achievement. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Research has shown that participation in extracurricular activities has a positive effect on adolescents' social behaviour and academic performance; however, the reciprocal influence of extracurricular activities and leisure on the development of adolescents' academic performance and social behaviour is unclear. In our study, we investigate the effect of school based and out-of-school leisure activities on adolescent's social and scholastic development. We also explore how students' gender, socioeconomic status and ethnicity influence their choice of, and engagement in activities. A sample of 5278 students (females 50%; migrant background 26%) filled in questionnaires in grade 5 and 7 and provided personal background information as well as evidence of their engagement in extracurricular and leisure activities, their social behaviour and academic performance. Using latent class analysis, we distinguished five identity-related patterns of engagement in extracurricular and leisure activities among 5th-graders. We found a connection between adolescents' gender, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity and their choice of, and engagement in, extracurricular and leisure activities, social behaviour and grades. We also identified a link between adolescents' patterns of engagement in extracurricular and leisure activities and developmental tendencies in their social behaviour and scholastic achievement between grades 5 and 7. Abstract (english):
This chapter provides an overarching framework to context assessment in international large-scale assessments (ILSAs), and applies it to discuss relationships between context and cognitive assessment. One of the most critical differences between these two types of assessment is the variety of topics, perspectives, and levels in the education systems that need to be taken into account. This chapter first points out similarities in context assessments across ILSA programs, thus defining a set of common content in context assessment. Although there are important conceptual similarities in context assessments across ILSAs, there are good reasons why this lowest common denominator should be enriched according to the respective study goals and designs of the different programs. This chapter discusses some possible directions and further, provides suggestions as to how the scope of ILSAs may be increased to provide better information about education research and policy in the future. Although this framework model is applicable to learning contexts worldwide, context assessments in ILSAs need to take into account the many similarities and differences of education systems world-wide. A final aim of this chapter therefore is to discuss some critical issues that arise from an international perspective in ILSAs. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The chapter at hand gives an introduction to the diagnosis of language competencies of immigrants. Those language competencies are assessed in large scale assessments as well as small scale scientific studies. Sensible research on language competencies of immigrants requires in depth reflection of the focused language competencies (speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing) and tests. The most important data sets that are available for reanalysis and that include data of immigrants will be presented in our chapter. For those planning to design their own study, well established tests for the assessment of language competencies will be described. Here, the implications of multilingualism of immigrants for the use of test norms will be discussed, too. Most of the existing tests focus on competencies in German, the language of public communication and teaching in Germany. There are, however, some tests that can be used to assess language competencies in the most prominent heritage languages of immigrants in Germany; those tests are given special attention. Abstract:
Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)
Abstract (english):
Qualitative data in the social sciences and economics have new requirements for their use in research practice. Funding agencies require more long-term archiving of data. The standards of "good scientific practice" expect data access beyond the research project. Furthermore, international journals expect published research results to be more transparent and traceable. To answer the demands of digital long-term preservation and data-sharing, three problems can be identified. 1. Archiving and sharing data require the consent of participants. 2. Data need to be anonymized as soon as the purpose of the research makes it possible. 3. Current privacy laws contain an obligation to delete personal data. In order to find solutions for these problems, the German Data Forum (RatSWD) founded the working group "Privacy and qualitative data." In this working group qualitative researchers and lawyers developed references/suggestions for the practical handling of qualitative interview data. In this this article we present the results of the working group. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to examine disparities in important components of reading acquisition in the context of migration. Previous empirical studies showed significant differences in reading skills between students with and without immigrant backgrounds. Data of N = 712 students tested in grades 3, 4, and 6 were analyzed with respect to group differences in reading acquisition. The autoregressive cross-lag panel-model and the latent growth curve models revealed negative effects of immigrant background on the relative position of children in the domains text comprehension and vocabulary as well as a negative effect on relative changes in vocabulary and positive effects on relative changes in reading motivation. Social inequality could not fully explain the identified effects. Immigrant background did not predict absolute growth of text comprehension, vocabulary, and reading motivation. Implications of the findings for research and practice are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Parental involvement research has greatly expanded over the past decade, but findings are mixed, reflecting in part the conceptual and methodological limitations of many studies. On the basis of longitudinal questionnaire data from 1,685 sixth-grade students, the authors studied parental help with homework because it is the most common and most controversial type of parental involvement. Distinguishing between the quantity and quality of parental homework involvement, the research shows that completely different conclusions about the effectiveness of parental homework involvement will be reached if its quantity is assessed instead of its quality: How often parents helped with homework was negatively associated with the development of achievement, whereas homework help that was perceived as supportive had positive predictive effects, and homework help perceived as intrusive had negative effects. Moreover, the results show that effect sizes would be overestimated if students' prior achievement and family background were not controlled. (DIPF/Orig.)
