Abstract:
This paper presents approaches and challenges to developing research software for qualitative humanities and social sciences research. While these methods so far lack a digital enhancement, we realized a range of research environments based on semantic graph technologies in research practice. In order to understand the researchers' needs and take the existing research practice seriously, a participatory and agile design approach was used by which several researchers were involved in realizing concrete research projects. A user-centered agile approach with fast prototyping was included. To materialize the needed interaction at an early stage of the research life cycle, this was accompanied by trainings, workshops, and joint paper publications in the different research communities. Abstract (english):
In recent years, semantically enhanced Digital Humanities Research has become a wide spread topic and it is realized in different environments (e.g. CWRC, Pundit, Graph databases). While semantic graph technologies are mainly used to connect, annotate, query and aggregate strictly formalized entities, there is a lack of interfaces for enhancing acts of interpretations. In the paper, we describe settings in the interpretational act of Objective Hermeneutics. Furthermore, the background of the design is outlined in relation to methods, design and data. The main part features the realization of an interface focusing the semantic enhancement of the collaborative spaces of interpretation and accountability, and examines the semantic explication of the research data (interactional protocols), the interlinked multiple layered annotations and the possibility to retrace the space of interpretation. Abstract (english):
The paper focuses on developments of virtual research environments (VREs) to enhance scholarly research practices with the specific goal to address classroom interaction analysis, using semantic technologies. Semantic Technologies give opportunity to address the recent move in Social Science towards multi-method approaches offering multi-layered research environments. VREs based on Semantic MediaWiki (SMW) provide researchers with more effective means of collaborative knowledge creation. The main challenge is capturing the multi-layered and iterative research process by participatory and evolutionary design using an agile framework development. The paper presents a heuristic research approach of Objective Hermeneutic method for qualitative data analysis in Social Sciences and Humanities. We developed a novel extension by adopting the researcher's theoretical model of Objective Hermeneutic in our VRE. This extension allows researchers to structure and interpret their data. We combine this extension with other extensions such as semantic forms to provide a user-friendly, wiki-like interface for domain experts with no prior technical expertise to easily carry out their research. As use case, the paper presents the VRE for classroom interaction which is based on two ontological models, the Objective Hermeneutic core ontology and the classroom interaction ontology, as result of authors work. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract (english):
The application of collective intelligence in the domain of language yielded collaboratively constructed language resources (CCLR) that can be used in a variety of ways. For example, Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and other language resources constructed through crowdsourcing such as Games with a Purpose and Mechanical Turk have been used in many ways in NLP. Researchers started using such resources to substitute for or supplement conventional lexical semantic resources such as WordNet or linguistically annotated corpora in different NLP tasks. Another research direction is to utilize NLP techniques to enhance the collaboration process and its outcome. Overall the emergence of CCLRs has generated new challenges to the research field that are to be addressed in the present book. As the research field of CCLRs matures, it has become necessary to summarize a set of results to advance and focus the further research effort.

Abstract:
This paper highlights how Semantic Web technologies facilitate new socio-technical interactions between researchers and libraries focussing research data in a Virtual Research Environment. Concerning data practices in the fields of social sciences and humanities, the worlds of researchers and librarians have so far been separate. The increased digitization of research data and the ubiquitous use of Web technologies change this situation and offer new capacities for interaction. This is realized as a semantically enhanced Virtual Research Environment, which offers the possibility to align the previously disparate data life-cycles in research and in libraries covering a variety of inter-activities from importing research data via enriching research data and cleansing to exporting and sharing to allow for reuse. Currently, collaborative qualitative and quantitative analyses of a large digital corpus of educational lexica are carried out using this semantic and wiki-based research environment.

Abstract:

Abstract (english):
The Open Linguistics Working Group (OWLG) of the Open Knowledge Foundation (OKFN) is an initiative of experts from different fields concerned with linguistic data, including academic linguistics (e.g. typology, corpus linguistics), applied linguistics (e.g. computational linguistics, lexicography and language documentation), and NLP (e.g. from the Semantic Web community). The primary goals of the working group are 1) promoting the idea of open linguistic resources 2) the development of means for their representation, and 3) encouraging the exchange of ideas across different disciplines. Here, we focus on one particular aspect of our work, the promotion of linked data in linguistics.
