Abstract (english):
The PISA studies provide unique opportunities to investigate the competencies and attitudes of 15-year-olds across the world. Past research investigating environmental awareness (EA) in PISA 2006 found associations between EA and science-related competencies and attitudes. Investigating EA in the PISA studies may have important implications for education for sustainable development (ESD): results may show which factors should be considered in educational interventions to enhance students' EA. Cross-national analyses of EA may provide insights into the predictors of EA on a local, national or international level. This study investigates the individual, school, and country level predictors of EA in PISA 2015 (365,194 students, 12,594 schools, 53 countries). The multi-level regression analysis on EA reveals that most of the variance is located at the student level. On the individual level, variables related to science learning in school are associated with EA across all countries. This study also compares the degrees of EA in the 2006 and 2015 populations. The results show similar degrees of EA in 2006 and 2015. Altogether, the study provides cross-country evidence on important aspects that should be addressed in successful ESD programs. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Dagegen zeigten türkische Kinder ohne Migrationshintergrund prosoziale Motivation, jedoch kein prosoziales Verhalten. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The present study compares prosocial motivation and prosocial behavior of children with a Turkish immigrant background in Germany (n = 44) to German children living in Germany (n = 50) and Turkish children living in Turkey (n = 68). Only girls living in Germany with Turkish immigrant background were found to achieve high levels of prosocial motivation and behavior. Whereas boys with Turkish migrant background and German children without immigrant background showed low levels of prosocial motivation and prosocial behavior. In contrast, Turkish children without immigrant background were high in prosocial motivation but low in prosocial behavior. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Based on a sample of N = 2.913 ninth graders the study investigated whether the student body composition of schools was associated with the development of students' school satisfaction and students' anti-social behavior over the course of one school year. We examined the school composition with regard to achievement, student background characteristics, school satisfaction, and anti-social behavior. Controlling for school track and student characteristics results from latent multilevel analyses revealed a positive compositional effect of school-average achievement on school satisfaction. We also observed a positive effect of the average school satisfaction on students' individual school satisfaction. Furthermore, the school-average anti-social behavior also positively predicted students' anti-social behavior. The findings of the present study extend existing empirical results on compositional effects by demonstrating that social-emotional characteristics can be aff ected by school composition and can function as compositional characteristics themselves. Abstract (english):
Why people differ in their susceptibility to external events is essential to our understanding of personality, human development, and mental disorders. Genes explain a substantial portion of these differences. Specifically, genes influencing the serotonin system are hypothesized to be differential susceptibility factors, determining a person's reactivity to both positive and negative environments. We tested whether genetic variation in the serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR) is a differential susceptibility factor for daily events. Participants (N = 326, 77% female, mean age = 25, range = 17-36) completed smartphone questionnaires four times a day over four to five days, measuring stressors, uplifts, positive and negative affect. Affect was predicted from environment valence in the previous hour on a within-person level using three-level autoregressive linear mixed models. The 5-HTTLPR fulfilled all criteria of a differential susceptibility factor: Positive affect in carriers of the short allele (S) was less reactive to both uplifts and stressors, compared to homozygous carriers of the long allele (L/L). This pattern might reflect relative affective inflexibility in S-allele carriers. Our study provides insight into the serotonin system's general role in susceptibility and highlights the need to assess the whole spectrum of naturalistic experiences.

Abstract:
Objective: This study examined associations between the five‐factor personality traits and indicators of academic achievement (grades and test scores). A particular aim was to investigate whether personality‐achievement associations differ between primary and secondary educational contexts and whether these differences vary between differential learning environments, that is academic versus nonacademic secondary schools. Method: We used two representative random samples from Germany: N = 3,658 6th graders in their last year of primary school and N = 2,129 9th graders attending different secondary school tracks (n = 566 academic track students; n = 1,563 nonacademic track students). Results: First, our results confirmed positive associations between Conscientiousness, Openness, Extraversion, and Agreeableness and academic achievement as well as negative associations between academic achievement and Neuroticism. Second, associations with Conscientiousness were more pronounced for school grades than for test scores. Third, associations were higher for 6th than for 9th graders in the overall sample for all personality traits with the exception of Openness. Fourth, personality‐achievement associations differed between academic and nonacademic track students. Conclusion: In sum, our results suggest the need for an educational stage‐specific perspective and contextually sensitive approach when examining personality‐achievement associations. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Children with reading and/or spelling disorders have increased rates of behavioral and emotional problems and combinations of these. Some studies also find increased rates of attention-deficit-/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder, anxiety disorder, and depression. However, the comorbidities of e.g. arithmetic disorders with ADHD, anxiety, and depression have been addressed only rarely. The current study explored the probability of children with specific learning disorders (SLD) in reading, spelling, and/or arithmetic to also have anxiety, depression, ADHD, and/or conduct disorder. The sample consisted of 3014 German children from grades 3 and 4 (mean age 9;9 years) who completed tests assessing reading, spelling as well as arithmetic achievement and intelligence via a web-based application. Psychopathology was assessed using questionnaires filled in by the parents. In children with a SLD we found high rates of anxiety (21%), depression (28%), ADHD (28%), and conduct disorder (22%). Children with SLD in multiple learning domains had a higher risk for psychopathology and had a broader spectrum of psychopathology than children with an isolated SLD. The results highlight the importance of screening for and diagnosing psychiatric comorbidities in children with SLD.

Abstract (english):
Background: Previous research results suggest that ADHD symptoms explain the relationship between specific learning disability and externalising psychopathology and between math disability and anxiety, but not between reading disability and anxiety. For depression, previous results are mixed. Aims: The current study aims to clarify this role of ADHD symptoms in the relationship between various areas of academic achievement (reading, writing, and math skills) and psychopathological symptoms (anxiety, depression, and conduct disorder). Methods and Procedures: We used linear regressions based on data from a general population sample (N= 3,014) collected using online assessment of 3rd and 4th grade students in Germany, which included measures of academic achievement and parent-reported psychopathological symptoms. Outcomes and Results: ADHD symptoms completely account for the relationship between reading/writing achievement and anxiety and between writing/math achievement and conduct problems. The negative relationship between academic achievement and depression was strongest for children with average or high ADHD symptom scores. Conclusions and Implications: ADHD symptoms play an important role in explaining the relationship between academic achievement and psychopathological symptoms in elementary school children. The nature and size of this role depend on the exact constructs under study. We discuss implications for the support of children with learning problems, ADHD, and/or psychopathological problems. Abstract (english):
In our research, involving 100 high school students from Germany between 10 and 17 years of age, children and adolescents were generally very open towards integrating Syrian refugees in their peer activities- with girls being even more inclusive than boys. We used hypothetical scenarios in which adolescents were asked if they would include refugee peers versus local peer in their leisure time peer group activities or not. In the first part of the study, we identified host country language skills as a key element for positive social integration of refugee youths in Germany. In part two of the study, we revealed an interesting asymmetry between youths' own decisions and what they think their group would do: whereas the youth themselves were very inclusive towards Syrian peers, they expected their group to prefer German peers and expected them to less likely choose a Syrian peer for their leisure time activities. Abstract:
Abstract (english):
In a current research project we implemented an approach for delivering computer assisted adaptive testing as an additional form of formative assessment for a lecture. We primarily used these tests as a formative assessment during a "fundamentals of computer programming" course. The tests also included an individual feedback to further guide the students. To evaluate and improve the formative assessments, we performed a usability study, which was focused on the user satisfaction while taking a test and reading the feedback. The study used the user experience questionnaire. The results indicate that an adaptive assessment can provide more support, but also shows shortcomings of the current implementation. (DIPF/Orig.)
