Abstract:
Objectives : Childhood maltreatment affects 20-30% of the German population and is an important risk factor for physical and mental diseases in adult life. This study reports first results of the distribution of childhood maltreatment in the population-based mega cohort German National Cohort (NAKO) and estimates associations with affective symptoms in adulthood. Methods : The Childhood Trauma Screener (CTS), a short version of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, was used in 83,995 adults (age: 20-72 years; 47.3% men) of NAKO. The five-item CTS assesses the severity of three types of childhood abuse and two types of childhood neglect. Results : Overall, 21,131 participants (27.5%) reported at least one type of childhood maltreatment; 14,017 participants (18.3%) reported exactly one type and 250 participants (0.3%) reported all five types of childhood maltreatment. Small differences regarding age (mean absolute deviation around the mean (MAD)=0.47), sex (MAD = 0.07) and education (MAD = 0.82) were observed. The severity of childhood maltreatment was associated with more severe symptoms of depression (β = 0.23), anxiety (β = 0.21) and perceived stress (β = 0.23) in adulthood, validated particularly for emotional abuse and emotional neglect. Conclusions : The distribution of childhood maltreatment in NAKO is similar to previous reports. Additionally, our results suggest differential associations with psychopathological symptoms for the five types of childhood maltreatment. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
This paper examines the influence of COVID-19 on social inequality in higher education. In particular, we focus on the study duration of international students compared to domestic ones in Germany. We assume that the pandemic has increased or decreased existing differences between both groups, affecting their study delay. The multilevel analyses with data "Studying in Germany in Corona Times" (2020) confirm most of our theoretical assumptions: on the one hand, international students expect a longer study duration due to their worsening financial situation. On the other hand, domestic students expect a longer study duration due to greater learning issues, which are provoked by a lower level of interaction in online teaching. Our results propose a more differentiated picture of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on social inequality: not only do financially poor international students get poorer but educationally advantaged domestic students lose, too. Abstract:
Introduction: Adolescence is regarded as a formative period for political development. One important developmental context is media. Negatively perceived political media content can foster populistic attitudes, which in turn decreases support of political institutions, such as the European Union (EU). As media valence effects are short-lived, this study examined intra-individual associations of media valence with European identity commitment and affect towards the EU, as well as indirect effects via populistic attitudes across 10 days. Methods: We implemented a 10-day daily diary study with 371 adolescents from Germany (January to February 2022). Adolescents were on average 14.24 years old (SD = 0.55) and 60.4% were female. We estimated the hypothesized associations using multilevel structural equation models and dynamic structural equation models. Results: We found significant associations between populistic attitudes and negative affect towards the EU on the same day and the next day. The lagged effect became nonsignificant, when including both same day and lagged effects into one model. Populistic attitudes were not significantly associated with European identity commitment within days or across days. Negative media content was associated with higher populistic attitudes on the same day and indirectly associated with negative affect towards the EU (b = −.01, 95% credible interval [−0.010, −0.004]). Conclusion: Negatively perceived political media content was associated with higher populistic attitudes and more negative affect towards the EU concurrently. Our results imply that media plays an important role for adolescents' development. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Reflection on pedagogical situations is considered as an essential prerequisite for the development of professionalism and represents an opportunity to combine scientific knowledge with concrete action in practical situations. The development of reflection skills is therefore a major challenge for teacher education-especially in practical phases. In this article we deal with the question of the extent to which instructions such as prompts and lecturer's feedback affect the reflection skills of students. For this purpose, we use a cluster-randomized design to examine the reflexive skills of 187 students in a standard pedagogical situation. We compare students receiving prompts, students receiving prompts and additional guideline-based feedback and students who receive neither prompts nor feedback. In the reflexive examination we differentiate between a content-related dimension that comprises the used spectrum of topics and the use of scientific knowledge, two dimensions of processes in which the discussion takes place, and a reflexivity dimension, i.e. the extent to which the complexity of the pedagogical situation is recognized and critically reflected or statements are presented in a way that does not recognize the situation's inherent complexity and ambiguity. In four MANCOVAs it can be shown that the specific usage of prompts can encourage students to describe more theories and make more interpretations. The additional feedback in particular motivates students to draw more conclusions for their own professionalisation and all in all use more processes than students in the two comparison groups. The results are discussed against the background of current research on reflection in teacher education. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Objectives: The present study introduces the assessment of depression and depressive symptoms in the German National Cohort (NAKO), a population-based mega cohort. Distribution of core measures, and associations with sociodemographic factors are examined. Methods: The current analysis includes data from the first 101,667 participants (NAKO data freeze 100,000). Depression and depressive symptoms were assessed using a modified version of the depression section of the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), selfreported physician's diagnosis of depression, and the depression scale of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Results: A lifetime physician's diagnosis of depression was reported by 15.0% of participants. Of those, 47.6% reported having received treatment for depression within the last 12 months. Of the subset of 26,342 participants undergoing the full depression section of the modified MINI, 15.9% were classified by the MINI with a lifetime depressive episode. Based on the PHQ-9, 5.8% of the participants were classified as currently having a major or other depression by the diagnostic algorithm, and 7.8% according to the dimensional assessment (score 10). Increased frequency of depression measures and higher depression scores were observed in women and participants with lower education level or a family history of depression. Conclusions: The observed distributions of all depression measures and their associations with sociodemographic variables are consistent with the literature on depression. The NAKO represents a valuable epidemiologic resource to investigate depression, and the range of measures for lifetime and current depression allows users to select the most suitable instrument for their specific research question.

Abstract (english):
The chapter brings together the individual chapter perspectives on theorizing teaching and thus initiating exchanges among the authors on outstanding issues and discrepancies to provide insights for how research on teaching may move forward. The Delphi study conducted for this aim was based on summaries of the answers of all individual chapters on three questions; authors were asked to rate and comment on each other's ideas. Comparing ratings and comments exposed the variability in the contributors' perspectives on (a) the existence, degree of development, and grain size of theories of teaching (first question), (b) the attributes of theories of teaching (second question), and (c) the process of developing theories of teaching (third question).
