Abstract:
Personality is a relevant predictor for important life outcomes across the entire lifespan. Although previous studies have suggested the comparability of the measurement of the Big Five personality traits across adulthood, the generalizability to childhood is largely unknown. The present study investigated the structure of the Big Five personality traits assessed with the Big Five Inventory-SOEP Version (BFI-S; SOEP = Socio-Economic Panel) across a broad age range spanning 11-84 years. We used two samples of N = 1,090 children (52% female, Mage = 11.87) and N = 18,789 adults (53% female, Mage = 51.09), estimating a multigroup CFA analysis across four age groups (late childhood: 11-14 years; early adulthood: 17-30 years; middle adulthood: 31-60 years; late adulthood: 61-84 years). Our results indicated the comparability of the personality trait metric in terms of general factor structure, loading patterns, and the majority of intercepts across all age groups. Therefore, the findings suggest both a reliable assessment of the Big Five personality traits with the BFI-S even in late childhood and a vastly comparable metric across age groups. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
In Germany, male students are largely overrepresented in STEM majors at university. Gender differences in important predictors of major choices, namely self-concept and interest in math or science have been discussed to explain the gender gap in STEM. For both, self-concept and interest, social comparisons with peers are important (big-fish-little-pond effect - BFLPE). Recent findings have further shown indirect long-term BFLPEs in high school on STEM major choice at university through students' self-concept and interest. We built on these findings and investigated if differential BFLPEs on females' and males' self-concepts and interests in high school could help understand gendered enrollment processes in math intensive university majors. We used a subsample (N = 2182) of a German longitudinal study and used data from two measurement points (T1: 12th grade; T2: two years after high school graduation). Results showed gender differences in math self-concept, math achievement, and enrollment in math intensive university majors. The BFLPE on self-concept, interest and university major choice did not differ between female and male students. These findings point to gender differences in the means of relevant predictors of university major choice, but to gender similarity in the underlying processes of self-concept formation and university major choice. Abstract (english):
Which factors help young adults choose educational pathways leading to higher educational attainment? Academic self-concept (ASC), achievement, and socioeconomic background have all been found to be important predictors of postsecondary educational choices and success. Although research has shown that student composition in secondary school may affect some of these predictors, only a few studies (mostly from the United States) have investigated the effects of student composition on postsecondary educational outcomes. The results showed that students with similar individual achievement had lower postsecondary educational attainment if they graduated from secondary schools with higher mean achievement. It has been proposed that social comparison processes explain this negative context effect (big-fish-little-pond effect [BFLPE]). In contrast, students with the same individual socioeconomic status (SES) had higher postsecondary educational attainment if they graduated from secondary schools with a higher mean SES. In the present study, we investigated the effects of achievement-related and socioeconomic student composition on subsequent educational outcomes using data from a longitudinal study in Germany. Contrary to previous studies, our results showed that student composition had little relevance for later educational pathways. There was a small, long-lasting, indirect BFLPE of achievement-related composition in secondary school on postsecondary educational outcomes through students' ASC. Furthermore, individual SES was strongly related to postsecondary educational outcomes, whereas being in an academic-track school with a higher or lower mean SES was not relevant for postsecondary educational pathways.

Abstract:
Self-concept in mathematics (MSC) and interest in mathematics are important predictors of whether a student will choose to major in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field at university. Research on the big-fish-little-pond effect (BFLPE) has shown that both predictors are affected by the achievement composition of students in schools. That is, given the same individual ability, students in higher achieving schools exhibit lower MSC and interest in mathematics than students in lower achieving schools due to social comparison processes. The BFLPE has been replicated in high school settings many times, but less is known about the long-term effects of this context effect. In the present study, we investigated the long-term effects of the BFLPE on the aspiration to major in and the actual decision to major in a STEM field at university. We used data from a German longitudinal study. The results showed no direct BFLPE on the aspiration to enroll in a STEM major at the end of high school or on actual enrollment in a STEM major 2 years after graduating from high school. However, small negative indirect effects of the BFLPE via MSC and interest in mathematics on the aspiration to and enrollment in a STEM major occurred. In sum, the longitudinal BFLPE on STEM major choice was small. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Secondary education is characterised by a sequence of transitions that are linked to educational inequality. Regarding social background effects, inequalities relate to disparities in educational achievement (primary effects) and educational decisions (secondary effects). In the present study, both primary and secondary effects are analysed based on an entire student cohort in the Hamburg school system (KESS study) across the course of secondary education, i.e. from entering secondary school to aiming for higher education. The KHB method is applied in order to decompose the effects, including transitions to upper secondary education. In line with previous research, total social background effects decrease across educational trajectories. No clear pattern emerges concerning an assumed increase in the relative importance of secondary effects. Primary effects operationalised by school grades are slightly predominant in the transition to lower secondary education, and nearly the same ratio is found for the transition to upper secondary education. However, regarding the aim to enter higher education, the relative importance of secondary effects is more clearly discernible.

Abstract:
Objective: This study examined associations between the five‐factor personality traits and indicators of academic achievement (grades and test scores). A particular aim was to investigate whether personality‐achievement associations differ between primary and secondary educational contexts and whether these differences vary between differential learning environments, that is academic versus nonacademic secondary schools. Method: We used two representative random samples from Germany: N = 3,658 6th graders in their last year of primary school and N = 2,129 9th graders attending different secondary school tracks (n = 566 academic track students; n = 1,563 nonacademic track students). Results: First, our results confirmed positive associations between Conscientiousness, Openness, Extraversion, and Agreeableness and academic achievement as well as negative associations between academic achievement and Neuroticism. Second, associations with Conscientiousness were more pronounced for school grades than for test scores. Third, associations were higher for 6th than for 9th graders in the overall sample for all personality traits with the exception of Openness. Fourth, personality‐achievement associations differed between academic and nonacademic track students. Conclusion: In sum, our results suggest the need for an educational stage‐specific perspective and contextually sensitive approach when examining personality‐achievement associations. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
This study examines educational pathways from secondary school on for graduates of tertiary institutions with and without taking up doctoral studies. Based on the longitudinal survey BIJU we investigate the predictive significance of characteristics of educational pathways on taking up a doctorate. We focus on differences in terms of duration of studies, vocational education, life and studies abroad and the job as a student assistant. Additionally, it is analyzed whether these characteristics are influential on the transition to doctoral studies beyond control of educational performance and social background. The findings suggest that there are significant differences in the characteristics between graduates of tertiary institutions with and without entering doctoral studies. In the multivariate analyses, beyond control of performance and social background, a negative effect of duration of studies and a positive effect of a stay abroad on taking up doctoral studies remain significant. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
A developing trend in participation in the educational system in Germany over time has been the steady increase in the proportion of students eligible to enter higher education. Since the switch to a two-track secondary system, this development seems to have taken on new momentum. At the same time, problems have emerged with respect to the maintenance of standards and comparability of qualifications. In a quasi-experimental design, this article uses the introduction of a two-track secondary system in Berlin to examine the nature of teachers' placement decisions, as well as maintenance of standards when opening up access to college-level programs. The structural reforms led to a jump in the proportion of students eligible for upper secondary education, associated with a drop in the required achievement level. Teachers' placement decisions integrate various judgments: assessments of student achievement, judgements of cognitive abilities, and evaluations of students' learning motivation and social behavior. Our results show that when access to the upper secondary track was opened up, the cross-school accuracy of teacher assessments of student achievement remained stable, despite the drop in the achievement level necessary to enter upper secondary education. School-specific measures became more relevant. There was no change in the relevance of motivational characteristics. Our analysis of the extent to which teachers' placement decisions were affected by the organizational and social context of the school revealed mixed findings. (DIPF/Orig.)
