Abstract:

Abstract:
Developers, coders, and designers of learning software have a significant influence on the understanding of education and learning in the expanding Global Educational Industry (GEI) as they introduce proprietary digital technologies and data science to formal and informal education. The chapter focuses on this kind of knowledge production and its implications for the understanding of teaching and learning practices. We explore the question how sense-making within algorithmic systems can be described in contrast to human sense-making as generally found in education. This concerns especially the relation of knowledge, learning, education (in the sense of "Bildung") and time. Throughout all life and developmental stages, humans are addressed by algorithmic systems in the same way, leaving out specific pedagogical values concerning lifetime and biography. By integrating digital software in the education process, established routines are questioned and changed. For example, algorithmic systems work with temporal immediacy - the systems answer immediately, but also provoke immediate reactions. Against this background, it stands in contrast to an understanding of learning and "Bildung", which inevitably takes time. The contribution calls attention to how digital systems challenge education and force educational routines into dilemmatic situations, such as setting a pedagogical relationship between solicitousness and data security. Digital systems are arguably shaping, in the long run, the next generation of adults as functionally appropriate complying participants and users of the algorithmic systems designed by the GEI. Abstract (english):
The handbook focuses on and compares the education systems in the three Americas: North, Central and South America, and includes a chapter on most countries in the region. The chapters follow a common structure and include schematic diagrams of the structure of mainstream education from pre-primary to tertiary level. Each chapter starts with a description of the historical and social foundations of the education system from the post-World War II period up to today, including political, economic and cultural contexts and conditions. By highlighting important dates and structural decisions, the current education system can be understood as resulting from past developments. The first part ends with a description of the transitions to the labour market that are offered, and the way in which these are organized in the education system described. The second part consists of an overview of the institutional and organizational principles as well as the structure of education from pre-primary to tertiary level. It includes a focus on legislative bases and financial provisions for the education system and a description of the structure by using the ISCED-classification. It further includes information of the supply of human resources such as teachers and other educators. The third and final part of the handbook discusses selected educational trends and aspects. In this context, three topics are of particular interest: dealing with inequality, ICT and digitization activities, and STEM-related policies and programmes. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
In the field of education, transatlantic discourse has been shaped by an exchange of ideas for a long time. Over the past two decades, education science has increasingly become internationally networked. Since 2015, the Office for International Cooperation in Education at DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education has organized international sessions on education research at the Annual Meetings of the American Educational Research Association, thus providing a floor for transatlantic exchange on current research topics. The volume gives an overview of the transatlantic activities in education research with regard to these sessions. It represents a collection of topics ranging from school development to the use of large-scale assessment and digital data in education to questions related to migration and public education, or the economization of education. Moreover, the volume offers a reflection on the gains respectively obstacles linked to international exchange.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The paper unfolds the ambivalences that permeate data practices in schools. By using the metaphor of visibility, a threefold shift is shown when digital data technologies are used in the classroom. These shifts are described with the terms panopticon, panperspicon and panspectron. In the process, pedagogical and other school practices are transformed in subtle yet far-reaching ways. The argument is demonstrated by analysing an interview with a teacher who reports on the use of digital technologies in her everyday school life. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english):
The chapter introduces the readers to the contents and rationales of this handbook. This Handbook focuses on the education systems on the American continents - North, Central, and South America - and includes chapters for most countries in this region, also the Caribbean. This introductory chapter first offers a conceptual discussion of central concepts that build the object of interest of the chapters, namely national education systems, and discusses their status and relevance for understanding education in the global era. By doing so, it sets the intellectual framework for the country chapters. By deliberating on the conceptual leverage of each term, it aims at both sharpening their analytical traction and pointing to their multifaceted nature - a crucial intellectual activity before any comparative exercise. It closes with a brief outline of the common structure that builds the backbone of the individual country chapters is then presented. This section briefly expounds the rationale of the different parts of the chapters, offering some justification for the organizational principles deployed, including their selective nature. In making these decisions transparent, the section also functions as a useful reading aid. (DIPF/Orig.)
