Abstract:
The Item Management Portal was the central PIAAC portal for all aspects of item development, item management, translation, adaptation, scoring and layout testing, and so on. [...] We cannot give a full overview of all aspects on the Item Management Portal here. Therefore we concentrate on specific parts to give an idea of the overall functionality. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The implementation of the cognitive items for PIAAC faced several challenges. [...] PIAAC was the first international large-scale study to be conducted entirely on the computer. Therefore, existing link items from prior studies like IALS and ALL had to be converted from paper to computer. In addition, new items had to be developed both in literacy and numeracy to take advantage of the new possibilities of computer-based assessment. Further, an entirely new assessment domain, problem solving in technology-rich environments, was defined and items had to be developed. This was all done under a short timeframe in collaboration with participating countries that developed items on their own, as well as by combining item development teams from different countries. To cope with these challenges, a multifaceted approach was taken, reusing existing item development and test delivery software to the extend possible and developing easy-to-use new software to fill in the gaps. As a basis, the assessment software TAO was used. In the so-called electronic reading assessment (ERA) option of the PISA 2009 study, TAO was used with the Hypertext Builder, a graphical authoring tool for complex items. This approach was reused and extended for PIAAC, resulting in a completely new version called the CBA (Computer-Based Assessment) ItemBuilder. All in all, the following combination was used: * Test definition, item, sequencing, item questions: TAO * Literacy linking items/stimuli: ItemBuilder * New literacy items/stimuli: ItemBuilder * Numeracy linking items/stimuli: ItemBuilder * New numberacy items /stimuli: ItemBuilder * Problem solving in technology-rich environments: TAO (new item type). The software and the procedures to produce the items are described in more detail below. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This chapter describes the electronic test delivery system of the PIAAC study. The complete delivery system consists of three parts that were installed on the interviewer's laptop. First, the country's case management system selected and organized the participants in the study and interacted with the embedded virtual machine (VM). As this war country-specific software, we cannot specify the content of these programs, but we can state that a common interface was defined, making access of the PIAAC VM possible. The second part was the VM itself, which served as an encapsulated environment to installed software from other household surveys and to the different hardware configurations existing in different countries. Third, there was the BQ and cognitive items running on the TAO platform within the VM. All these parts interacted [...]. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:

Abstract (english):
Modern assessments are increasingly based on complex test materials, which are often implemented as simulations. These interactive assessment instruments enable students to use the system in various ways. For this reason, students' interactions with a test delivery platform are stored in automatically generated log files but during the assessment process a large amount of log data is accumulated with various characteristics (clicking, typed answers, and timing-related data). For an efficient analysis of these human-computer interactions' data, it is necessary to gain information about the actual test-taking processes. One very promising way of examining test-taking behaviour is visual data exploration, which is focused in our study. The main objective of this paper is to illustrate how information visualization can help the educational measurement with exploring students' activities in computer-based assessment. It gives insights into visual representations that are useful in depicting test-taking behaviour, identifying trends in students' activities in simulation-based assessment, and examining individual differences on the grounds of test-taking processes. We therefore applied tools and visualization layouts, which support educational practitioners in making use of the data assembled in computerized test delivery.

Abstract (english):
Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs have gained global popularity and are increasingly used in all areas of daily life, including learning and assessment activities. To support different kinds of learning and assessment content, a versatile and comprehensive system is desirable. In addition, other aspects of long-term assessments have to be covered such as security, data protection and adaptivity, e.g. to new schedules or items. In this paper, we present the concept and realization of an Android-based mobile assessment system especially designed for school usage. It has been used already in several research studies in elementary schools, e.g. to measure daily fluctuations of cognitive performance capabilities.

Abstract (english):
International comparative studies like the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) pose special challenges to the localisation of the test content. To allow for comparison between countries, the assessments have to be comparable with respect to measurement properties. Therefore, internationalisation and localisation are crucial steps to guarantee test equivalence across countries. The localisation of test items is different from the localisation of web-based contents or software as the test content has to be authentic within a country while the test's measurement properties have to be comparable across countries. Using the PIAAC study (Programme for the Assessment of Adult Competencies) as an example, this paper describes all stages of the localisation process for an international large-scale assessment. The process ranges from the development of source items to translation, adaptation of layout issues and meta-data adaptations. The paper concludes with a discussion of lessons learned and open questions.

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Questionnaires for complex studies can grow to considerablesizes. Several hundred questions are not uncommon. In addition, routings are used to distinguish between question paths for differentrespondents. This leads to the question of how to ensure validity andother important properties. We examine this question for a case with even more demanding sideconditions: An important part of the OECD study "PIAAC" (Programme forthe International Assessment of Adult Competencies) is a background questionnaire (BQ) containing more than 400 questions. This BQ has tobe adapted by all participating countries. Nevertheless, integrity ofthe overall system has to be ensured.(DIPF/Orig.)
