Abstract (english): A disturbed functioning of the prefrontal cortex, the anterior cingulate cortex, and an accordingly reduced P300 presumably underlies executive function deficits of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ( ADHD). Using a combined classification and Go/ NoGo task paradigm, the present study investigated whether medication with methylphenidate (MPH) modulates the P300 as measured by a high-density electroencephalogram ( EEG) and facilitates response inhibition in children with ADHD. Further, effects of MPH were compared with effects of self-regulation by if-then plans (Gollwitzer in Am Psychol 54: 493 503, 1999). MPH as well as if-then plans modulated the P300 and improved inhibition of an unwanted response on a Go/NoGo task to the same level observed in children without ADHD. Importantly, self-regulation strategies might be a valuable alternative to medication with MPH in children with ADHD.(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): The dimensionality of a reading comprehension assessment with non-stem equivalent multiplechoice (MC) items and open-ended (OE) items was analyzed with German test data of 8523 9th-graders. We found that a two-dimensional IRT model with within-item multidimensionality, where MC and OE items load on a general latent dimension and OE items additionally load on a nested latent dimension, had a superior fit compared to an unidimensional model (p .05). Correlations between general cognitive abilities, orthography and vocabulary and the general latent dimension were significantly higher than with the nested latent dimension (p .05). Drawing back on experimental studies on the effect of item format on reading processes, we suppose that the general latent dimension measures abilities necessary to master basic reading processes and the nested latent dimension captures abilities necessary to master higher reading processes. Including gender, language spoken at home, and school track as predictors in latent regression models showed that the well known advantage of girls and mother-tongue students is found only for the nested latent dimension.

Abstract (english): [The authors] examined whether positive transfer of cognitive training, which so far has been observed for individual tests only, also generalizes to cognitive abilities, thereby carrying greater promise for improving everyday intellectualcompetence in adulthood and old age. In the COGITO Study, 101 younger and 103 older adults practiced six tests of perceptual speed (PS), three tests of working memory (WM), and three tests of episodic memory (EM) for over 100 daily 1-h sessions. Transfer assessment included multiple tests of PS, WM, EM, and reasoning. In both age groups, reliable positive transfer was found not only for individual tests but also for cognitive abilities, represented as latent factors. Furthermore, the pattern of correlations between latent change factors of practiced and latent change factors of transfer tasks indicates systematic relations at the level of broad abilities, making the interpretation of effects as resulting from unspecific increases in motivation or self-concept less likely. Abstract (english): We examined working memory deficits of children with mathematical difficulties. 38 children with mathematical disability (19 children meeting the criteria for dyscalculia, i.e. reaching the discrepancy criterion to intelligence) and a sample of 38 typically developing children matched for chronological age performed an extensive test battery of phonological, visual- spatial, and central executive working memory. The results revealed that children with mathematical disability show significant deficits in the visual-spatial sketchpad. However, the performance did not differ significantly depending on whether or not the diagnostic criteria for dyscalculia were met. A discussion of the results with regard to the role of intelligence is provided. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Using a negative priming paradigm, the authors tested whether age-related interference effects are due to age differences in perceptual distractibility or in resolving conceptual competition. In samples of 40 younger adults ( aged 22-34) and 40 older adults (aged 58-76), the authors found a greater reduction in processing speed for older than for younger adults in trials in which targets were superimposed with distracting objects as compared to single-target trials. When trials were paralleled for perceptual features, that is, when single-target trials were supplemented with nonsense distractors, the age effect became nonsignificant. The results suggest that age-related interferenceeffects are primarily due to age differences in perceptual distractibility. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english): The present chapter addresses age-related differences between younger ( 19-33 years) and older adults (58-80 years) in working memory functioning. In a cross-sectional study theroles of inhibition and general slowing for age-related differences in complex memory spantasks were examined. The same sample of 64 younger and 64 elderly subjects participated intwo experiments with a time lag of 4-6 weeks. In experiment 1, age differences in a readingspan task and in an operation span task were not affected by inhibitory demands, such as (1) the presence or absence of distracting information in the study phase; and (2) high vs. low amounts of previously learned but no longer relevant material. When either age differences ina speed measure or age differences in a measure of the phonological loops' capacity weretaken into account, age differences in complex span scores disappeared. Since tasks wereadministered subject-paced in experiment 1 and elderly adults suffer from a general slowing, they had to retain items longer than younger adults until recall. To examine the impact ofitem retention on performance, a second experiment was scheduled in which long- short itemretention conditions were included and processing time was equated for younger and olderadults. Task processing was more attention demanding due to a segmented task presentationin experiment 2. Performance was worse for long as compared to short retention intervals.Retention intervals did, however, not influence age differences in complex span scores. Agedifferences were greater in experiment 2 than in experiment 1. Older adults' workingmemory functioning seem to be more limited by time (speed and decay), but also by space(capacity of the phonological loop and attentional resources) than those of younger adults. Titel: Working memory capacity and reading skill moderate the effectiveness of strategy training in learning from hypertext

( DIPF/Autor)
Abstract (english): Cognitive and metacognitive strategies are particularly important for learning with hypertext. The effectiveness of strategy training, however, depends on available working memory resources. Thus, especially learners high on working memory capacity can profit from strategy training, while learners low on working memory capacity might easily be overtaxed. In addition, efficient basic reading comprehension processes areimportant for strategy training to be successful: When both the newly acquired strategies and poorly routinized basic reading comprehension processes compete for working memory resources, navigation within the hypertext and learning might deteriorate rather than improve. In an experiment, 64 undergraduates learned with a comprehensive expository hypertext after receiving either a cognitive or a metacognitive or no strategy training. In line with the predictions, learners high on working memory capacity or reading skill could profit from learning strategy training in terms of learning outcomes and the quality of their navigational behavior. Learners low on working memory capacity or reading skill, in contrast, performed worse in both training conditions compared to the control condition. The improvement in learning outcomes for skilled learners as well as the impairment in learning outcomes for unskilled learners could be shown to be indirect effects mediated by the quality of navigational behavior. Abstract (english): Three negative priming studies were carried out to examine whether this paradigm allows a separation of the effects of aging on access, deletion, and restraint control of inhibition. In each study 24 younger (18-35) and 24 older (57-82) adults were asked to identify pictures. The results reveal difficulties among older adults in preventing the access of distracting perceptual input into responses; however, the ability to restrain inappropriate answers and the ability to delete once- relevant information are not affected by age.
