Abstract: The role of response time in completing an item can have very different interpretations. Responding more slowly could be positively related to success as the item is answered more carefully. However, the association may be negative if working faster indicates higher ability. The objective of this study was to clarify the validity of each assumption for reasoning items considering the mode of processing. A total of 230 persons completed a computerized version of Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices test. Results revealed that response time overall had a negative effect. However, this effect was moderated by items and persons. For easy items and able persons the effect was strongly negative, for difficult items and less able persons it was less negative or even positive. The number of rules involved in a matrix problem proved to explain item difficulty significantly. Most importantly, a positive interaction effect between the number of rules and item response time indicated that the response time effect became less negative with an increasing number of rules. Moreover, exploratory analyses suggested that the error type influenced the response time effect. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): While detecting simple language errors (e.g. misspellings, number agreement, etc.) is nowadays standard functionality in all but the simplest text-editors, other more complicated language errors might go unnoticed. A difficult case are errors that come in the disguise of a valid word that fits syntactically into the sentence. We use the Wikipedia revision history to extract a dataset with such errors in their context. We show that the new dataset provides a more realistic picture of the performance of contextual fitness measures. The achieved error detection quality is generally sufficient for competent language users who are willing to accept a certain level of false alarms, but might be problematic for non-native writers who accept all suggestions made by the systems. We make the full experimental framework publicly available which will allow other scientists to reproduce our experiments and to conduct follow-up experiments.

Abstract (english): We evaluate measures of contextual fitness on the task of detecting real-word spelling errors. For that purpose, we extract naturally occurring errors and their contexts from the Wikipedia revision history. We show that such natural errors are better suited for evaluation than the previously used artificially created errors. In particular, the precision of statistical methods has been largely over-estimated, while the precision of knowledge-based approaches has been under-estimated. Additionally, we show that knowledge-based approaches can be improved by using semantic relatedness measures that make use of knowledge beyond classical taxonomic relations. Finally, we show that statistical and knowledgebased methods can be combined for increased performance.

Abstract (english): In this paper, we describe the UKP Lab system participating in the HOO 2012 Shared Task on
preposition and determiner error correction. Our focus was to implement a highly flexible and modular system which can be easily augmented by other researchers. The system might be used to provide a level playground for subsequent shared tasks and enable further progress in this important research field on top of the state of the art identified by the shared task.

Abstract (english): With over 23 million articles in 285 languages,Wikipedia is the largest free knowledge base on the web. Due to its open nature, everybody is allowed to access and edit the contents of this huge encyclopedia. As a downside of this open access policy, quality assessment of the content becomes a critical issue and is hardly manageable without computational assistance. In this paper, we present FlawFinder, a modular system for automatically predicting quality flaws in unseen Wikipedia articles. It competed in the inaugural edition of the Quality Flaw Prediction Task at the PAN Challenge 2012 and achieved the best precision of all systems and the second place in terms of recall and F1-score.
