Abstract:
An effective way to improve students' mathematical knowledge is to have them construct multiple solutions for real-world problems. Prior knowledge is a relevant prerequisite for learning outcomes, and the experience of competence is a basic need that has to be fulfilled to improve achievement. In the current experimental study (N = 307), we investigated how the construction of multiple solutions for real-world problems by applying multiple (two) mathematical procedures affected students' procedural and conceptual knowledge and their experience of competence. Path analyses showed that constructing multiple solutions for real-world problems increased students' feelings of competence and affected their procedural and conceptual knowledge indirectly through the experience of competence. Moreover, students' prior knowledge affected their knowledge at posttest directly as well as indirectly via their experience of competence. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Complex problem solving (CPS) is a highly transversal competence needed in educational and vocational settings as well as everyday life. The assessment of CPS is often computer-based, and therefore provides data regarding not only the outcome but also the process of CPS. However, research addressing this issue is scarce. In this article we investigated planning activities in the process of complex problem solving. We operationalized planning through three behavioral measures indicating the duration of the longest planning interval, the delay of the longest planning interval and the variance of intervals between each two successive interactions. We found a significant negative average effect for our delay indicator, indicating that early planning in CPS is more beneficial. However, we also found effects depending on task and interaction effects for all three indicators, suggesting that the effects of different planning behaviors on CPS are highly intertwined. Abstract (english):
Valid cross-country comparisons of student learning and pivotal factors contributing to it, such as teaching quality, offer the possibility to learn from outstandingly effective educational systems across the world and to improve learning in classrooms by providing policy relevant information. Yet, it often remains unclear whether the instruments used in international large-scale assessments work similarly across different cultural and linguistic groups, and thus can be used for comparing them. Using PISA 2012 data, we investigated data comparability of three teaching quality dimensions, namely student support, classroom management, and cognitive activation using a newly developed psychometric approach, namely alignment. Focusing on 15 countries, grouped into five linguistic clusters, we secondly assessed the impact of linguistic similarity on data comparability. Main findings include that (1) comparability of teaching quality measures is limited when comparing linguistically diverse countries; (2) the level of comparability varies across dimensions; (3) linguistic similarity considerably enhances the degree of comparability, except across the Chinese-speaking countries. Our study illustrates new and more flexible possibilities to test for data comparability and outlines the importance to consider cultural and linguistic differences when comparing teaching-related measures across groups. We discuss possible sources of lacking data comparability and implications for comparative educational research. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The study investigates the cognitive load of students working on tasks that require the comprehension of multiple documents (Multiple Document Comprehension, MDC). In a sample of 310 students, perceived task difficulty (PD) and mental effort (ME) were examined in terms of task characteristics, individual characteristics, and students' processing behavior. Moreover, it was investigated if PD and ME can still contribute to MDC while controlling for these variables. The perceived difficulty of the task was shown to be related to the number of documents, text length, study level, and sourcing. Mental effort was predicted by text length, study level, and processing time. When including these variables as covariates, cognitive load was incrementally predictive of MDC. The results are discussed in terms of how working memory resources can shape the process of comprehending multiple documents. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Instructional sensitivity is the psychometric capacity of tests or single items of capturing effects of classroom instruction. Yet, current item sensitivity measures' relationship to (a) actual instruction and (b) overall test sensitivity is rather unclear. The present study aims at closing these gaps by investigating test and item sensitivity to teaching quality, reanalyzing data from a quasi-experimental intervention study in primary school science education (1026 students, 53 classes, Mage = 8.79 years, SDage = 0.49, 50% female). We examine (a) the correlation of item sensitivity measures and the potential for cognitive activation in class and (b) consequences for test score interpretation when assembling tests from items varying in their degree of sensitivity to cognitive activation. Our study (a) provides validity evidence that item sensitivity measures may be related to actual classroom instruction and (b) points out that inferences on teaching drawn from test scores may vary due to test composition. Abstract:
Advances in computer technology and artificial intelligence create opportunities for developing adaptive language learning technologies which are sensitive to individual learner characteristics. This paper focuses on one form of adaptivity in which the difficulty of learning content is dynamically adjusted to the learner's evolving language ability. A pilot study is presented which aims to advance the (semi-)automatic difficulty scoring of grammar exercise items to be used in dynamic difficulty adaptation in an intelligent language tutoring system for practicing English tenses. In it, methods from item response theory and machine learning are combined with linguistic item analysis in order to calibrate the difficulty of an initial exercise pool of cued gap-filling items (CGFIs) and isolate CGFI features predictive of item difficulty. Multiple item features at the gap, context and CGFI levels are tested and relevant predictors are identified at all three levels. Our pilot regression models reach encouraging prediction accuracy levels which could, pending additional validation, enable the dynamic selection of newly generated items ranging from moderately easy to moderately difficult. The paper highlights further applications of the proposed methodology in the area of adapting language tutoring, item design and second language acquisition, and sketches out issues for future research. Abstract (english):
The development of multiple solutions for a given problem is important for learning mathematics. In the present intervention study, we analyzed whether prompting students to construct multiple solutions (more precisely: prompting them to apply multiple mathematical procedures to real-world problems) and prior self-efficacy influenced students' self-efficacy directly as well as indirectly via perceived competence. Students' self-efficacy (N = 304) was measured before and after a 4-lesson teaching unit, and students' perceived competence was measured during the unit. Results of the path model showed that although prompting multiple solutions did not positively affect self-efficacy, indirect effects of teaching method on self-efficacy were found. Students who were asked to develop multiple solutions perceived higher competence and reported higher self-efficacy than students who were required to provide one solution. These indirect effects were significant for students with low prior self-efficacy and nonsignificant for students with high prior self-efficacy, indicating the moderating effect of prior self-efficacy. This finding indicates that students with unfavorable learning prerequisites such as low self-efficacy might benefit from teaching methods that require them to construct multiple solutions. Further, students with low prior self-efficacy reported lower competence during the lessons regardless of whether they were asked to develop one or multiple solutions; they also reported lower self-efficacy at posttest prior self-efficacy was controlled for. Our findings therefore indicate that disadvantages for students with low prior self-efficacy for the further development of self-efficacy during learning might be balanced by teaching students to construct multiple solutions. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Focusing on Germany, this article presents results from the international comparison of fifteen-year-olds in collaborative problem solving and a cross validation of the scaling in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015. A new computer-based test was used requesting students to solve a problem jointly with simulated group members. Data from collaborative problem solving of fifteen-year-olds (n = 124,994) in 51 countries were assessed. The German mean competence level (525 points) is a quarter standard deviation above the OECD average (500 points) and a quarter standard deviation below the OECD's top performing country Japan (552 points). In all participating countries, girls outperform boys. While the percentage of top-performing students in Germany is comparable to proportions in the best-performing OECD countries, 21% of the students in Germany only reach competence level I or below, twice as many as in Japan. National results are presented as well as empirical evidence on the quality of the test, which is critically discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)
