Abstract: The Study has unique aspects that differentiate it from other international studies of teaching. This chapter describes the aspects of teaching that were measured in the Study, how the samples of teachers and classrooms were obtained in each country or economy, and how the Study was fielded. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the limitations of the Study that should be taken into account when considering the Study's results and implications.

Abstract: Cross-cultural differences in Social Desirability (SD) could be partly due to the nonequivalence of constructs, items, or other challenges of cross-cultural research. We tested to what extent a Mexican, indigenous scale of SD, capturing both positive and negative features of SD, would be useful in other countries. Data were collected in convenience samples in eight countries (Argentina, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Lebanon, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Spain) in order to test the psychometric accuracy and invariance of the factor structure. Values of Tucker's factor congruence coefficients (gauging invariance) and tests of the similarity of the cross-country similarity of Cronbach's alpha (gauging internal consistency) revealed that SD, as measured by this indigenous list, is stable and comparable across cultures. The results are interpreted in a conceptual framework in which SD is viewed as a culturally embedded communication style that people use to integrate successfully into their groups. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: The aim of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of extreme response style in cross-cultural research by integrating quantitative and qualitative evidence in a mixed methods design. In the quantitative phase, indexes of extreme response style, derived from quality of life measures from different international studies, were compared between Spain and the Netherlands. Results indicated that extreme responding was more common among Spanish than among Dutch in endorsement of items, but that the opposite was found for frequency scales including never as a response anchor. In the qualitative phase, cognitive interviews were conducted with 25 participants in each country. The integration of quantitative results and qualitative findings suggests that country differences in extreme response style may stem from various sources, including the more independent evaluation of each item by Dutch, the stronger connotations of never for Spanish and stronger emotions triggered by specific topics such as work satisfaction that was more strongly associated with insecurity for Spanish. It is concluded that the integration of quantitative and qualitative evidence can help to understand cross-cultural similarities and differences in extreme response style. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): This paper investigated the effects of corrections for scale usage preference in seven Latin American countries, Portugal and Spain in student self-reports in the 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). These targeted countries tend to show a strong tendency of expressing strong opinions and self-enhancement, which can pose serious validity threats in cross-cultural comparisons of self-reports. We examined to what extent score corrections, that have been proposed, would change the patterning of the cross-cultural differences. We corrected for the scale usage preferences in a measure of teacher support among 39,045 students in nine countries, based on extreme response style, overclaiming, and anchoring vignettes, respectively. These measures showed different effects: (1) All correction methods helped to improve measurement invariance, although the correction based on anchoring was less effective in reaching scalar invariance compared with the correction of extreme response style overclaiming; (2) controlling for extreme response style and overclaiming changed the mean score of Spain to a greater extent than other countries, which seems to present a more realistic patterning, whereas the changes on correlations with other measures were rather limited. The use of anchored scores led to drastic changes both in means and correlations. A firm conclusion about which method is to be preferred cannot be given as there is no evidence which method enhances the validity of scores in these countries more. We discuss the necessity and practicability of correction methods. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): In one experiment, we explored how high school students use hyperlink relevance cues while they navigate to answer questions from hypertexts. Current evidence has shown that students may navigate by either performing a deep semantic analysis of the relationship between the question and the existing hyperlinks, or by matching words in the question to words in the hyperlink labels. We focused on how students combine both cues during navigation, and how comprehension skills relate to the use of such cues. Our study revealed that 14 year old students (N = 53) selected hyperlinks by relying to a similar degree on both word matching and semantic overlap. Furthermore, when there was a conflict between an irrelevant link cued via word matching and a relevant link only cued through semantic overlap, students' comprehension skills facilitated their initial selection of an informative relevant link. To conclude, we discuss the implications of these results for current models of hypertext navigation. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: The birth of a child alters various domains in the lives of women and affects their personal well-being. An important question, therefore, is what factors facilitate transition to parenthood and make motherhood a positive experience. According to the concept of person-environment fit, parental well-being may be explained by a mother's personal value-system and how well it fits within her cultural environment. A cross-cultural approach provides the possibility to account for personal as well as cultural influences. In this study, the values and well-being of 74 Spanish and 31 German mothers of young children were compared. Contrary to expectation, Spanish mothers are as family-oriented as German mothers, but show more approval for individualistic and traditional attitudes. Both groups score equally high on several scales assessing well-being. However, personal values correlate with parental well-being in the German but not the Spanish sample. So, whereas goodness of fit of the personal values and environment accounts for German mothers' well-being, this does not hold true for the Spanish mothers. These results are interpreted to reflect changes in cultural values in Spain and Germany.

Abstract (english): During the last few decades, schools in Europe have transformed as the number of minority students has increased in proportion. Some education systems achieve quality and equity together. Other European education systems achieve quality at the expense of equity. There are also a number of European education systems that achieve insufficient quality and efficiency. This situation, in which education systems are achieving neither quality nor equity, is a cause for serious concern. The high dropout problem, concentrated especially in heavily minority urban schools, is another problem. Educational inequality is linked to socioeconomic status, and increasingly to language skills. Educational policies that leave some groups of students behind lead to social fragmentation and would risk social cleavages. This volume contains, inter alia, best practices and policy recommendations how to fight these problems which affect many educational systems in Europe and worldwide. (DIPF/Orig.)
